Considering all TFA discussion is confined to a handful of threads (one of which you started), it seems to me that if you’re so bothered by people’s reactions to that film, you can easily avoid them. I’m not pretending to be an old timer here myself, but my impression has always been that this place is about preserving and campaigning for the OOT, not relentlessly dumping on everything else. Hating everything since 1983 is not and has never been a requirement for membership.

You sir are correct, I need to avoid anything pre/post. Is there such a forum?

It is obvious that everyone in this thread had some form of expectation going in to the theater and that is why opinions very so much. I enjoyed the film as a whole but it doesn’t mean I don’t expect the bar to go up now that TFA is here. I’m sure they are watching and listening to all the reactions.

This film has short comings for sure. I went in expecting nothing and had a good time with my daughter. Do I think some of the rehash was unnecessary, sure. Do I feel the writers, including Lawrence Kasdan, could have brought it bigger, yes. I’m sure there were a lot of outside interests at play here that none of us had control over too. The film is here to stay regardless of how anyone of us feel about it.

I’d like to think that with the box office draw it’s had they can use that and all the reactions to tread smarter for the next 2 installments. Us Star Wars fans are a finicky bunch but we probably know the universe far better than those making the films now so it stands to reason that there are a lot of heavy handed reactions. I am hoping that we will all be heard and that they will think before they leap in to the next film.

😃

I remained unpumped by the hype so there wasn’t the deflation I experienced after TPM or Prometheus. Sadly I remain unpumped for the next one too.

Prometheus was a good film IMO, I’m looking forward to the next one. But then again I was never bowled over by Alien.

There’s an exchange in the actual film after they escape that’s something like:

Finn: “How did you do that?!”
Rey: “I don’t know! I’ve flown a few ships in atmosphere before, but I’ve never left the planet!”

I’m sure that’s not close to verbatim but it’s definitely the gist. It’s a line I couldn’t make out until my second or third viewing because Rey and Finn are talking at the same time very fast. I took the “few ships” she refers to to mean other junkers Unkar Plutt owns, doing odd jobs for extra rations. She says the Falcon hasn’t flown in years, but I’m sure Plutt had other freighters of similar classes. I’m seeing it again on Saturday with my family, I’ll try to remember it word for word.

Considering this forum is called original trilogy, I think a rebrand is needed as most folk in here consistently defend non-original trilogy films Tfa is just another bad spin off…my second viewing really brought this home… #originaltrilogyand anyoldshitewithstarwarsinthetitle.com

You’re assuming an awful lot of authority about the state of the forum for someone who registered less than a month ago.

I joined thinking this forum was dedicated to fans of ‘just’ the original trilogy? It seems that I was very, very wrong. Loads of TFA blinkers on in here, must have seen a different film to me as it’s just as bad as the prequels if not worse as it’s not even had the involvement of the ORIGINAL creator.

Now I know you are at the wrong place. This forum was started to support the original films, not the creator who has withheld them from us.

I knew I was in the wrong place when I read some of the threads and replies from the resident CLIQUE, you all should really try harder to be inclusive rather than criticise every post a non-clique member posts, your forum may last longer.

But why mindlessly avoid anything post? If you don’t like TFA that’s totally cool (personally I hate the prequels and try my best to avoid any mention of them in an attempt to purge them from memory) but what if Episode VIII turns out to be fantastic? Will you avoid it purely because it’s not part of the OT?

War does not make one great.

I’ve been a member here for roughly eight months now and I’ve hardly felt like I’ve been ignored by a “clique.” People here, like most SW fans, are just very opinionated, and you can hardly expect to find a forum where everyone will immediately agree with everything you like and dislike about something. Also you are kind of implying that the people here who acknowledge the flaws of TFA but still really enjoy it are more or less dumb or ignorant, so you’ll have to expect some retorts.

Ignoring the fact that TFA is shit is definitely ‘dumb’. I was open to the Post trilogy but how many chances can you give it (I’ve already given it 4 chances), get a decent script and a brilliant SCI FI director such as Ridley Scott or Spielberg and we may get a decent film…

I’d like to comment on Anchorhead’s points because it’s a fun little brain teaser to figure these kind of “plot holes”.

Anchorhead said:

  • An escape pod the size of an SUV falls to a planet, sometime later the Empire decides to go look for it, and within minutes the stormtroopers are standing next to it? Weak.

The size is small, if there would be an escape pod sized thing falling to Earth I think there are measures to track it’s landing site. I’m sure Empire has the measures. Also it could have tracking in the blockade runner, or it could send some kind of distress signal.

Anchorhead said:

  • The pod lands very near Luke’s house and he just happens to buy the droid that was inside? Later it ends up at Ben’s, who also just happens to have the lightsaber the totally random farm boy’s dad used to own? Contrived.

Not sure how near it lands, the droids could’ve travelled a few weeks in the desert. That may still be close, but R2 could’ve piloted it close to Ben if he had some info about his whereabouts. At least they didn’t land on Ben’s backyard. And Luke isn’t random to Ben because Ben more or less is close to Luke because of the connection.

Anchorhead said:

  • The Death Star - constructed specifically to blow-up planets - has to go around a planet before it can…blow up a different planet? WTF?

Most likely the weapon takes time to power up. It is only 30 minutes to go around and the Empire wasn’t in a hurry because they thought the rebels would be no match. What’s a half an hour when you’re sitting on a Death Star? That’s the irony.

Anchorhead said:

  • The Death Star is the size of a moon, yet our heroes seem to be able to walk everywhere they need to be in what appears to be just a few minutes. Unrealistic.

Turbolifts. Also it isn’t stated it takes minutes, they probably spent a couple of hours there, but it would be a boring movie if they showed 2 hours of them walking in corridors and standing in lifts. They probably used R2 to know their way and get around. There must’ve been some info posts there or something, I don’t think every Imperial knows where to go in a station full of gray corridors.

Anchorhead said:

  • A small exhaust port on a moon-sized space station can lead the entire station disintegrating? Contrived.

Maybe. But if there is a reactor or something that has exhaust then there would have to be some sort of port to get it out. The shaft was also shielded so it did have protection. I don’t know what kind of reactor there was so hard to say if the blow up was “realistic”.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Very enjoyable but kinda soulless.

I must admit that while PT being annoying, it has more soul.

I would say the opposite. TFA is mindless drivel, but it does have some spirit.

We sometimes lose planes and things of that nature but Earth is a water world and we don’t have a level of technology to break out of our stellar system faster than four decades. The Empire have much better technology than that and they are looking at a almost uniform sand ball.

We have no idea how long the droids travelled with the Jawas, though it would be nice to think Artoo had a hand in sending them off to the Lars farm (which he still remembers) either by hacking the crawler or persuading the Jawas of the potential profits (in the radio drama version he deliberately sabotages R5D4 so that Owen buys him instead so it’s not outside his behaviour type to do something like this).

The Death Star seems to be only able to destroy solids (rocky planets, metal spaceships). Destroying Yavin may have been beyond it’s design parameters.

The Death Star is the size of a small moon but how much of that is habitable space is not explained. A gravity train travelling through an Earth sized object would take about 45mins to travel pole to pole. The Death Star has less mass and is mostly hollow but a powered elevator would do the job even faster. One assumes there is some sort of transit hub on the station so it may be a matter of changing elevators a few times. A bit like using an underground train system only a military one without all the annoying gits with ice-cream making machines getting in the way.

It’s a two meter, ray shielded port on a top secret battle station surrounded by laser turrets and guarded by waves of fighter craft and this from a designer who doesn’t expect a small scale assault (it almost doesn’t work). The only other pilot to get near enough to fire (at the expense of his squad buddies) misses and gets himself blown up for his trouble. The elite bombing squadron is all but wiped out in the first attempt.

Star Wars has some little leaps into the coincidental but they are much fewer than TFA not unless there’s one all-powerful force controlling everything.

It made me think that all the characters in the film where intensely stupid, including the aliens but that’s for another thread.

There goes my idea of thinking that you might frame the BD and put it on your wall. 😃
