The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS ** — Page 23

What are the thoughts on the crudely fashioned Rebel fighter doll we see at Rey’s house? Obviously she made it, but why? Is it possibly someone who brought her there and she’s trying to stay connected to them emotionally?

It reminded me of an episode of Doctor Who. A small girl meets the Doctor one evening and thinks he’s coming back for her. We meet her later in her life as an adult and in one scene inside her house you can see she had made a similar doll as a way to deal with the emotional distress of him having never returned.

For the record; I thought it was handled perfectly in Force Awakens. I don’t want a Lucastyle® explanation of every bit of minutiae. Much like Star Wars77, that’s where the fun of using your imagination comes in. I’m just curious as to what the board thinks.

I didn’t notice it. Another thing to watch out for the second time around.

It’s really hard to decide which is the worst Star Wars character in history now, Jar Jar or Phasma? At least Jar Jar was a genuine character, even if wildly inappropriate and hopelessly annoying. Even the Ewoks were cute and had their emotional little moments.

Phasma’s only purpose in the entire ******* film was to lower the shields for the resistance. That’s it. Just imagine an imperial officer whose only function was to lower the shields on Endor and say “you’re gonna regret this!”

Also, did everyone else not get trailers? Was this them trying to make it like a 1977 experience? Were there trailers after the film? I was really surprised to have it start immediately after the lights went down.

You lucky SOB. We got 20 minutes of trailers at a 10:00 PM showing.

No other Star Wars character will ever generate the amount of loathing Mr. Binks has endured since 1999.

Aren’t you forgetting Phasma’s suspicion that Finn balked at carrying out orders set his decision to flee in motion?

That’s debatable. I thought it was more that Finn didn’t want to kill innocent people. Further backed up by Phasma saying they didn’t discipline him because it was his “first offense”.

I didn’t think Finn stuck around long enough to have his blaster checked to prove the suspicion he didn’t fire?

I don’t remember if they said something like “first offense” or “no history”. If they said offense, then it would imply he had been found out. But really I don’t remember.

Either way, it would be more in line with his characterization that he ran away because he didn’t want to kill innocents as opposed to running away to save himself.

Why not both?
Also his moment with Poe in the corridor about needing a pilot does suggest that he was mostly interested in running away, at least at that point in the story. However at Kanata’s castle he did talk about having made the choice to not kill for the FO. So I’d say his motivations covered both poins.

I definitely noticed it and thought it was a lovely character-building touch. I just figured she’s into piloting and spaceships and dreams of action, much like Luke (who we saw playing with a toy shuttle while he gives threepio a bath).

I agree. She could have been so cool but they made her a useless patsy.

The cynical side of me believes she was only included in the marketing hype to highlight another female character.

I’d like to see her return in VIII, but if she does she’s been tainted with the lame brush. Any soldier/officer worth their salt would surely rather die defending the first order than let the base be destroyed.

And if she did indeed manage to get out of the trash compactor, and somehow escape the planet before it exploded, she should be renamed Captain Houdini.

Hello guys, I’m new here!

Imo The Force Awakens was a great film, have to admit that the story isn’t very creative or original but I like the way they introduced the new characters. Seeing Rey and Finn together was great. I like their chemistry! Liked all of the new characters, only Phashma was a real disappointment… Hope to see more interesting shots of her in the future. The way Han died wasn’t very heroic but I can deal with it.

TFA also gave me 3 times that goosebump experience, no other recent film gave me that.

Luke having no lines and only 30 seconds screen time was OK for me if he will play a decent role in the next films.

Now something different… what do you guys think? Is Rey the daughter of Luke Skywalker? I’m curious about your thoughts!

I hope not. Too obvious. Why can’t she be strong in the force without being a Skywalker?

It could be that they softened her character purposefully? Maybe seeing Finn defect affected her and she is heading down that same road and starting to question the First Order’s motives. That is why she put the shields down without much of a fight. Maybe we see her leave the First Order in the next film. Just an idea.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but was the lightsaber ignition sound for anakin/lukes saber accurate to the OT? it sounded different to me

This annoyed me too. The first time Finn ignites it, it sounds like Vader’s saber to me. I was on alert for this after having replaced two saber sound effects for my Ep3 edit that were wrong. Then again, the DVD remaster has the ROTJ saber ignition used in ESB, so I’m not sure what they’re smoking.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I feel the other way. I’ll be a little let down if she ends up being anyone but Luke’s daughter. I think there is too much pointing in that direction for it to not be the case. It would also help to get rid of the silly idea presented in the prequels about the Jedi not being allowed to marry and have families.

I noticed the saber didn’t sound exactly the same too, not quite sure what was different about it. The blasters throughout the movie didn’t have the classic Star Wars sound either. I thought they sounded kind of like Star Trek weapons at times.

That’s going to be my new Star Wars motto from now on. There are no bad people in the world! Everyone is a good guy just waiting to be changed back to the good side.

Where were Palpatine’s parents? I think it’s unfair that Palpatine didn’t have anyone try and get him back to the good side of the Force. At this rate I will be disappointed if General Leia doesn’t get Snoke into a therapy session that includes talk about boulangerie owners at the climax of the trilogy.

Should everyone who is presented as a hero/villian always stay on that path? I don’t think having a character or two have a change of heart is necessarily a bad thing.

Well, that’s kind of my point. Everyone will now become a good guy. We’ll have an entire series where everyone is prequel Anakin, and Kylo, and Phasma who didn’t mean to do bad things. They are just misguided kids making mistakes and killing people because some bad emperor or bogeyman tricked them into doing it.

True. I hope they come up with something more creative too! But atm I think they want to keep the Vader bloodline. Vader’s bad grand son and his enlighted grand daughter. But I totally agree with you.
