Anchorhead, have you seen Big Fish? I'm certainly not the biggest Tim Burton fan, but I thought it was a great movie.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I know your pain. I also plunked down for that set years ago because it was cheaper than buying the three separately.I agonized over even owning a copy of the abomination. It is painfully awful. When viewed as a comedy and a satire on comic book universes then it is a little more palatable. I watch it every millennium just as a reminder of what not to do. It still doesn't hold a candle to Batman '66 though.

I do like my Batman dark however. Dark Knight Returns, Knightfall, Mask of the Phantasm, and the original issues of Detective Comics from 1939 to 1940.

"The Breakfast Club"

A friend at a party could not stop talking about how great this film is, and every other person around us was in frantic agreement. I told them that I kind of remembered seeing parts on cable back in the late 80's, but my house mate had to flat out mention that he had never seen it. With that, our friends forced the DVD on to us to view at home. Well tonight was one of the most painful movie experiences we have ever had. Why do people like this film so much? The kids are all a mess, and the character I felt most sorry for was the school teacher guy. Why did they cry to each other? I went to High School in suburban New Jersey in the early '80's , and kids did not act that way. Thank goodness. And yes, I have had detention once or twice. I think some people (like the ones at that party I went to) are just having that "Nostalgia For an Age That Never Existed" syndrome, and believe that John Hughes movies accurately reflect the word and people of the mid to late 1980's. All these people are around my age (35- 45), but seem to have lived in a parallel reality that only existed for me in T.V. and movie productions.

"Hate" is a strong word - I wouldn't say I hated any movie. The limit of my dislike for a film would be to turn it off before the end (assuming it's a DVD or TV broadcast - I've never walked out on a movie at the cinema).

Here are some films that could be considered "great", or at least somewhat popular, that I switched off before the end:

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Rita, Sue and Bob Too!
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Gangs of New York
Signs
The Village

I did make it through LOTR I and II, but didn't have any inclination to attempt III.

I have yet to meet anyone that I know of who really liked [Blade Runner] upon their first viewing.

...

EDIT:

HAHA! I read this post after I made the above post. So I am not the only one who has experienced this exact same thing.

Blade Runner gets better the more you watch it.  I thought it was "meh" when I first saw it - now it's my favorite film of all time.

I first saw Blade Runner as the Director's Cut version during its theatrical run - I loved it. Later watched the original theatrical version on VHS, and I can see why people thought it was "meh".

The Blade Runner Final Cut was the first BD I bought (and I still only have 2 discs in my collection so far, the other being Ghostbusters.)

As I said above, "hate" is a strong word. I hate clueless fuckwits who record their TVs then put the footage up on Youtube.

this may come as a shock to people.   I've never watched Blade Runner.   At some point I intend to though

Hmm. That gives me an idea for a new thread!

Superman '78 comes instantly to mind. Aside from the Smallville scenes and Reeve’s performance whenever he’s not wearing glasses, I utterly despise the entire movie.

I almost feel the same way about Superman II, but Terence Stamp’s hammy performance elevates it to tolerable levels.

It may be wayyy early to say this since there’s two more films to watch, but I recently finished Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, extended version. This is my first time seeing this film. My boss was honestly baffled I had never seen LotR. My boss loves Star Wars, but he said LotR is sooo much better than Star Wars. So I said alright, alright, I’ll get to watching them over the break. Holy shit, I’ve never expereinced such a super long setup/exposition like that. I’m ashamed to say it, but I kept checking the time left on the film because it really felt it was dragging on and on.

Is it normal to find the first film boring and then later, after seeing all three, suddenly it appears great? It didn’t exactly make me excited to see the next two, but I’ll do it regardless since it’s one of those trilogies that many have seen.

This. And I would add Sunset Boulevard to that list.

Well, like you said, you did see the extended version. I haven’t seen the extended version myself so I don’t know how it compares, but perhaps the theatrical version would be more your speed.

The theatrical version is infinitely better. There’s a good half hour gone! And it’s not just the shorter runtime, but as a result the pace is much quicker and easier to pay attention too. Trust me, it’s far better.

Even Peter Jackson has said the theatricals are better… so that kinda means the extended ones aren’t really "Director’s Cut"s.

Author

Okay, thank you two for promoting the theatrical versions 😃

My boss was insistent that I’d go all in with the extended versions, but I think he could be heavily biased since he can’t remember a time when LotR lore was all new to him, like it is to me. So alright, I’ll start micro and then later on, once I can soak in the story better, appreciate the longer versions.

LOL, I feel like an old guy. LOTR didn’t feel too slow at all to me, and I thought TFA was way too fast-paced.

That’s what comes from being a bookworm and not a film buff, I guess. 😛

I don’t know what to feel like. LOTR and TFA were both paced appropriately for my tastes.

Hmm, so not a bookworm. Maybe a hookworm?

the hobbit was awful to me.the peter jackson version.the scenes are so far fetched they are beyond silly.like the scene where he is swordfighting while standing on two heads in barrels going down a rough river.also the movie aliens.i loved alien.but they took a horror movie franchise and ruined it.they took a great horror movie and turned it into icecream.aliens wasnt scary.killing a bunch of aliens like flies isnt scary.what made the first one scary is it was hiding and you didnt know where it was and it seemed impossible to kill.but in aliens it was so easy to kill them.and thats not scary.also terminator 2.i loved terminator 1.but having arnold become a good guy because he was a big star now and couldnt be seen as a bad guy anymore is dumb.and that little kid in the movie was so anoying too.he ruined it for me.the movie the thing was great but the new prequel was awful because the thing wouldnt try and hide like in the 80’s version.it would just come out in the open.thats not scary.and then having the woman in the movie being the only one to hold the flamethrower.like she is the only one who knows how to use it.oh and i liked superman 78 version.even the soundtrack is awesome by john williams.one of the best.and gene hackman was great as lex luthor.
