Man, Harmy, I think I’m more nervous about all the publicity than you are. Or maybe I’m just more paranoid 😃

I’m quite sure that there would have already been some (legal) emails if the higher-ups really had a problem with this. I am just glad that everyone is getting informed that there is a way to enjoy Star Wars the way it is supposed to. If someone would even plan on harming Harmy (he he!), there would be a major poopstorm incoming. Hell… even my 64 year old dad started smiling after Han shot first.

Yeah, we go through the small amount of paranoia every time an article is posted. I think Disney probably realizes that we would go from a community that is 100% guranteed to buy whatever OOT they someday put out, to a group who never pays for a single SW branded piece of merchandise again. It’s hard to believe that we could become more cynical than we already are, but that’s the way it would happen. 😃

At this rate, there are probably only a few occasions to really be concerned about legal action, that being after The Force Awakens has had its theatrical run (so as not to hurt those ticket sales by upsetting fans who are already unsure about how Disney will treat Star Wars), or during/after an official release of the OOT (if they feel the DeEd could harm sales of a product they’re finally trying to sell). You’d think notoriety would be bad for something in this legal dark-grey area, but it’d be foolish to think this project is at all under the radar, surely people who could do something about it already know about it; they are either choosing not to do anything or biding their time. The damage is done (and they know it is their own fault), and Harmy might as well keep rolling out his improved versions until told otherwise. If anything, Harmy is proving there’s an audience for the OOT (and keeping the faith alive for us die hard OOT fans), which is valuable market research Disney is getting for free; it is not outside of reason for the DeEd to in some way help turn the tide in the right direction (and Disney could just be sitting back and seeing where things go).

I’ve just heard from a guy who made one pretty well known Star Wars fanfilm and wrote for Clone Wars and he says he just watched Despecialized with a bunch of writers from Rebels 😃

That’s really awesome, Harmy! It’s crazy to see how mainstream this project has become and how grateful people are to actually have the original trilogy in HD. Disney would have to be completely blind to not see what the public are craving.

That, or they reckon we’re doing fine for ourselves.

I love Harmy’s versions. But man, they’d have to really butcher their own release in order to make that a valid concern. Still, they may find a way to manage.

You never know what greedy people will do. There’s already people trying to sell it for a profit as it is, but they could try to pass it off as an early release of the official version or something silly closer to the release date… Product confusion is not looked pleasantly upon. Granted, at that point, they’d probably have better results coming down on those sellers, than messing with Harmy. After that, if Disney screws up an OOT in enough ways that could use the Harmy touch to make it more authentic (using the new official source), then things could get really interesting…

EDIT: Oh, you’re talking about a Disney OOT release. Yeah, assuming that very improbable scenario ever comes to pass, the vast majority of the general public will probably be happy with Disney’s 81 crawl/93 audio upmixed to Atmos/bad color timing release, and we’d be an even smaller minority of Star Wars fans than we are now.

That’s a very good point. Some company in hong kong could just print off the official cover from an announcement and ten thousand bootleg discs from fan sources. People suck.

Kind of. While I think it would be wise to let the dust settle from an official release, the vast majority of people waiting for the unaltered versions just want the dumb changes undone. They’re not purists, they don’t care about recomposited stuff. They want Lapti Nek, Hayden and CGjabba gone, and Han to shoot first.

Interest in fan SW preservation edits will become much more niche, I think. Similar to the releases we see around here where things are regraded, but 99.99% of consumers wouldn’t care, or would even prefer the official version. I suppose that’s why I said it would take a massive screw up for Disney to consider fan preservations a threat after an official release. Few fans have the same need for meticulous perfection that we see around here (and they’re probably better off for it 😛 ). I just think that our version of a ‘screw up’ and everyone else’s is very different.

Okay, that’s a good point, if Disney does something “good enough” for the masses, then a project like this (while important to us), would only shrink in perceived importance and impact. In that case, the majority will be happy with their Disney BDs and the heat could be largely off of anyone that wants to tweak things back to theatrical accuracy, like open crawl, specific audio mixes and Fox Fanfare (which may well not survive to a Disney BD).

I’m still having trouble burning a DVD+R DL on a MBP running Mac OS X Mavericks from the AVCHD (DVD9) version that’s linked on tehparadox and hosted on uloz.

I’ve tried using Apple’s Disk Utility app and Sarner–Hauser’s Disco app. I’ve tried burning the ISO, the ISO and MDS, the ISO and MDS and TXT, the BDMV, and the BDMV and CERTIFICATE.

OS X System Information reports my optical drive can write to DVD+R DL, but each time I only end up with a data disc, not a playable disc.

Anyone succeeded at this? Which files am I supposed to burn? Which apps/methods do you recommend?

Much obliged.

I had the EXACT same problem. I’m a MBP user, with OS X El Capitan. My resolution was to use Mac DVD Ripper to burn the ISO file.

I didn’t pay for it, I think you can do unlimited burning without actually paying. I successfully used this software to burn the AVCHD iso to DVD9 (DVD+R DL).

Good luck.

Just saw Lifehacker did a story on Harmy too.

http://tinyurl.com/jj8fwog

In addition to that article, I see that Harmy’s work has been featured again in this follow-up over on io9 (dot) com too - lifehacker.com/how-to-properly-catch-up-on-all-the-star-wars-movies-be-1748097695

(Harmy, that abc (Australia) link was a really neat write-up on your project. By the way, there seems to be a lot of gobbledygook text in your very first post now - I don’t know if it’s to do with the changeover in some way or not, but perhaps you may want to edit it)

I feel like this is…bad news?

Although, knowing them, it won’t be perfect. I’m sure you guys will find and endless number of things to fix.

Old rumor.

I am positive at this point that Disney has to release the OT. If that happens, I’ll thank them more than I would spite them.

WHOOPS! I feel stupid. Didn’t see the date at the top of the article. Someone on FB posted it as if it were breaking news, and I didn’t check. My bad. I’ll go back to never saying anything. lol

IIRC that happened before (reporting an old rumour as if it was new). I hope we don’t have it happen again.

Hey guys!

I was the one putting out the newsletter back in the day. After ESB v2.0 came out, it got to the point where the discussions were just about how to re-work files to burn, convert, edit, etc. I asked a few people to send me things to put in the editions from time to time but after a couple of months of “nothing to report” I just haven’t received anything from anyone so there hasn’t been a newsletter sent out in a while.

I am happy to say that people are still signing up for it all the time. As a matter of fact, we hit the 3000 subscriber mark just last week…just no content to release.

If anyone wants to send me articles or links I’ll happily distribute a newsletter on occasion but the whole thing was mainly just to announce when Harmy was releasing a new version so people wouldn’t have to read through the forums on a daily basis.

Let me know if you guys want to do anything with it.

I’m hoping someone here can help me out. I’m a Mac user.
I downloaded the AVCHD versions of the despecialized edition. I believe these are designed to be burned to DVD+R DL discs.

However, the Verbatim DVD+R discs I purchased have 7.96 GiB capacity (they’re 8.55 GB base 10).

Only ROTJ fits on the discs - at 7.93 GiB
ESB is 8.06 GiB
ANH is 8.13 GiB

Is DVD+R DL the disc format these versions were intended for?
Are the file sizes I’m recording correct? Or did I download bad copies?
Are Windows users able to burn correctly with ImgBurn and these file sizes? Or using other types of media?

I’m wondering what troubleshooting strategy I should pursue at this point. I’d really like to make discs that are playable in a BluRay player rather than off my computer.

Hi, why don´t try to see the movies through USB, or pendrive. Most of modern Blu ray players have a USB port. Burn Blu ray discs with some formats is tricky. Other options are play the movies in you PC and conect it to your TV. there are many ways to do this, even wireless. Sorry my English.

On MySpleen I’ve only found the 2.5 version of “A New Hope”, but the other versions are like 1.0 or 2.0 and so on of The Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi. I want 2.5 of all 3 films, but no one has uploaded them and I can’t get Jdownloader to work properly! So I can’t download from tehparadox!!! AGH!!! I’ve downloaded Jdownloader 5 or 6 times and have reinstalled it that many times as well.
Can anybody help!?

I can’t help you with Jdownloader, but version 2.5 only exists for A New Hope. The latest versions for the other two are a 2.0 Workprint for Jedi, and I think only 1.0 for Empire.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
