Star Wars Custom Blu Ray Saga Set (a WIP) — Page 4

Harmy has been kind enough to supply a recreation of the '81 crawl that he did some time ago. This saves me the trouble of having to recreate it myself, however I still have to integrate it into a recreated '81 star destroyer flyover, so that’s what I will be working on for the next couple days. After that is finished, I can integrate that into the BD, create chapter markers and then Disc one will be complete.

Team negative1 evidently has scanned the entire 81 opening and will be including it in their release. What annoys me is that all three, 77, 81, and 97, all are different. 77 and 97 share the same starfield, though not aligned the same during the title crawl, but 81 was totally different. I pulled a reasonable copy from the JSC preservation that matches the GOUT source pretty well.

Author

Yeah. I believe the 81 star field was from empire correct?

Author
Time

I think it might be, but it is not in the same position. I took a quick look and this one pattern of stars is above the E in Episode V and above the IV in Episode IV. In the 77 and 97 openings, the stars are in the same left/right position, but not the same top/bottom positions… until it pans down and lines up under the Star Destroyer. The position of the moons is different in the 81 version as well. Ah the minutiae of trying to get it exactly right.

Author
Time

Yeah. As I’ve begun to find out. Haha. I thought it would be a simple thing to recreate but I’m finding it may take a lot longer than I thought.

Here is an update on the cover. I think this is the final design I’m going to go with. Any input? I added an extra disc for the 2011 version.

While I haven’t begun the other films yet, the covers for each of those films will be in this same design, but each film will have a different color. ANH obviously has a blue cover, ESB (undetermined), ROTJ will be green, TPM will be yellow/gold, AOTC (undetermined), and ROTS will be red. ESB and AOTC I haven’t decided for yet.

That looks awesome! Great work. Can’t wait to see what the others look like. I’ve always been a fan of the Special Edition art, and it goes well with the"Ultimate Edition" tagline.

Also, did you decide which preservations you’ll be using?

Author

I will be going with Harmy’s despecialized and respecialized.

Author

I’ve just found out about this, and I’m sincerely excited.

Among the list of extras, I’d include also the new extra contents made for the recent “digital movie collection”, assuming that tehy can be found somewhere.

Author

If anybody can find a way to capture those for me, I’d gladly find a place for them in the release.

I’ve begun a very minor color correction to the despecialized edition for this release. Nothing major, just fixing a couple color issues. I think Harmy matched it a little too close to the IB Tech source, which at the time everyone assumed to be a perfect representation of the original colors, but of course we now know that isn’t entirely true, as technicolor prints have inaccurate idiosynchasies of their own. Im just fixing a couple things, notably the distractingly over-yellowed tatooine scenes. But again, nothing major. Harmy crafted a masterpiece and I’m careful to not mess with it too much.

Looking forward to this. Are you going to share just what corrections you’ve made exactly?

OMG! This sounds awesome. I’m sincerely super hyped for this, but I can wait. Actually I’m most excited for the BD authoring of Harmy’s DeEd but the rest seems awesome to me.
Quick questions: did you get seamless branching to be REALLY seamless with the solution provided? I tried to achieve that with my “International Blu-ray project” (which was based on Harmy’s DeEds and “Translators’” edits) that I canceled because it wasn’t seamless at all and people told me they were totally NOT fine with this (I did do a BD 50 that I kept to myself and burnt). But I didn’t know it was possible to fix that. Also, what languages are you including? I was tempted to keep only the languages from the EU Blu-rays + Italian (as a preservation was made but for some reason Italian dub isn’t on my French BD), but the more the best.

I was previously johnlocke2342.

@dlvh I wasn’t planning on it, but if you have any specific shots you’d like to see, post them and I’ll show how I’ve corrected them.

@MoiseMust I wasn’t able to unfortunately. Although that’s probably down to operator error more than anything haha. Instead I’m simply putting each version of the film in full on it’s own timeline. As for languages, I haven’t given it my full attention yet as I’m not quite at that point in the authoring process. I was planning on including most (not all) of the audio tracks on the mkv of despecialized, but if you have specific audio you think the project would benefit from having, certainly let me know.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the reason it’s been a little quiet with this project is because I’m in the middle a slight business expansion and have been transferring everything on my computer onto a new computer. Things should pick up shortly.

Calling the 2011SE the “Final Edition” seems awfully optimistic to me.

Haha well I couldn’t figure out what to call it to differentiate it from the “special editions” so I took my cues from blade runner’s “the final cut”.

This project looks really cool, and I’m quite interested. Also, after reading you and others talk about what to call the different SE’s, I just thought, wouldn’t it be best just to call them:

Special Edition (1997)
Special Edition (2004)
Special Edition (2011)

I’ve always been bothered by the use of weird differentiating terms like ‘redux’. It makes it sound like a cheap fanedit, and the SW SE’s have never officially even had any sort of ‘redux’ or ‘director’s cut’ tag on them. Though I am fine with the term ‘director’s cut’.
I hope your able to finish this project, as many people will be very happy with it, I’m sure, and that includes myself.

I just personally wanted some differentiation between the various versions beyond just the year of release. I’m basically trying to make something that looks like it could actually feasibly have come from lucasfilm and I don’t see any marketing department calling three different versions of a film the “special edition”. Also I feel it’s worth noting that neither the 2004 version nor the 2011 version have ever officially been referred to as the “special edition” or any official “version” title, so I took some creative liberties with the names.

Author
Time

You could go for “DVD Version” for the 2004 and “Saga/Canonical Version” for the 2011.

Maybe:

Special Edition (Theatrical)
Special Edition (DVD)
Special Edition (Blu-ray)

Thoughts?

I think that’s better, if the years were still included. Not sure what Fox or Disney would call them, if they were to actually release them, but Special Edition Redux is probably not the answer. I don’t think anyone would kid themselves about a Final Version. Certainly no one here, but probably not even Disney would. 😃

Also, it will match the PT discs if the same is going to be done for them (the Theatrical, DVD, and Blu part with years). There would be no point of giving them more extensive titles for their limited changes.

I really like like the idea of “saga edition” for 2011. Sounds like something lucasfilm would put out so I’ll definitely change that one.

Not gonna call 04 the “DVD” edition because I’m going to use an hdtv broadcast and all of them will be on blurays, so calling it the dvd version just seems weird and makes it seem much more fan made. I’m all for changing “special edition redux” to something else, as I really only put that because I couldn’t think of anything else. Any suggestions would be awesome.

I’m gonna be pretty stubborn on the names thing though haha sorry I just can’t bring myself to put just the year to differentiate them all.
