Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 186

It’s most evidently chopped up when they splice the line about family in there at a totally different volume, pitch and tone.

Yes. I thought that the waiting and family lines were all Rey before. But now it sounds like Maz says the first part, and Rey the second. Which would be… Weird.

Just got back from Spectre. TFA trailer ran. Looked awesome huge. Best theatrical Star Wars moment for me in over 35 years.

Awesome. The colors look a lot more natural on the JP. The snow is white instead of green.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Also the more I see Kylo’s lightsaber in action, the more I’m warming up to it. I know it’s technically a gimmick, but I like that it’s something completely different from what we’ve seen before. It just seems so vicious, and I like that, it really does seem like something a bad guy would use, and it’s a bit less elegant than Vader’s saber (so him being a copycat is kind of reflected in his weapon.)

Oh, BTW, did anyone else hear the Wilhelm scream at 1:21?

That Tie Fighter shot, and the sunset with the vaporators are my favorite.

I like the way Kylo’s lightsaber has a fire look to it.

Yes I faintly heard the scream, but it is there.

I’ll admit the shot of the TIE fighters against the sun looks incredible.

I remain apathetic/antipathic towards pretty much everything else, though.

I went to Spectre last night in IMAX (one of the huge, ‘real’ IMAX theaters, not one of the Liemax ones), and wow, seeing the new trailer on a screen that big… That was just an experience. I never got to see the originals in theaters, and I was young-ish for the prequels, so just getting to experience the feeling of actually be immersed was pretty goose-bump inducing.

It does make me sad though, because I will be back home for the holidays when I see TFA, and the ‘IMAX’ theater near my hometown is just one of the fake ones that was retrofitted. Man, I would give almost anything to be able to see it on a real IMAX.

Other thoughts: I liked the new Japanese trailer a lot, better than the third US one in fact. Interesting note, I downloaded it from Youtube, and when I clicked the mp4 file to open it, I must have double clicked it, because it opened two copies about a second off from each other. Thus, the first time I watched it, it had this epic dialogue echo going on, which to be honest, was pretty awesome. Now that I watch it with the ‘normal’ audio, I can’t un-think about my accidentally brewed version.

Other than that, I’m still pretty disappointed in the posters. For all of the talk/work JJ has done in regards to going back to Star Wars’ roots, all of the posters are just… not that good (although I don’t know if that’s his call). Even that IMAX one, while definitely better, doesn’t quite do it for me. The faces posters are also just meh.

Regarding the plot: I’ve said it before, but more than anything I want to wait and see before judging. With that being said, more quick hits: I’m still iffy about Kylo Ren’s voice, the Starkiller concept could go poorly, and we better get a very good reason as to why Luke’s lightsaber is the thing propelling everything forward. I’m very concerned about that last one… On the good side, I am growing very confident in the acting. I think the new actors are going to crush it, and I can’t wait to see how they do.

So in conclusion, I’m still on the hype train, and getting more and more excited by the day.

May the Force be with you.

Derision, of course 😄 Maybe it was too sudden, too unexpected, with that two-steps igniting, I don’t know. I myself can’t understand why, but as soon as I saw it igniting, I found it hilarious and immediately started laughing, like when Finn suddenly appeared in the desert in the first teaser.

I’m reading elsewhere that Amazon has let a big spoiler slip. Not sure how, or if it’s accidental, but beware if you use their site!

I read it, and it seems kind of weird to me.
It seemed a bit too obvious, just throwing out a spoiler like that in parenthesis in the middle of a product description.
Probably just someone at Amazon trolling us.

MSW has a writeup this morning about why it’s false. The item in question is being sold by a third party with fulfillment by Amazon, so none of the copy actually comes from Amazon. Whoever wrote the description also completely ignores the style guide and calls the movie “Star Wars VII Force Awakens” by “Lucas Films ltd”. No way that came through official channels.

Just needs “Ride of the Valkyries” playing over it.

New 30 second TV Spot with more new footage and dialogue from Maz Kanata:

This voice sounds very different though.
I have no doubt that this one is Kanata, but then who’s voice is it we’ve been hearing in the previous trailer?

I also really liked this shot.
(These sparks have a very OT feel to them.)

I also noticed that this shot from the trailer was very similar to the landscape we saw blowing up in the official trailer.
It could even be that they’re trying to outrun some kind of explosion or laser in the Falcon.

Whatever the deal with the voice is, I love the line. So great to have Kasdan writing about the Force again instead of George. This totally has the mystical quality of some of Yoda’s lines from the OT.

These trailers, I have been trying to pin down the style, and the closest thing I can find to it, what are their inspiration.

And I am feeling that it is inspired by “the thin red line” by terrence mallick. The narrative over images.
That is an acknowledgement by the film makers I think of Mallicks work. About time he did the extended cut. but I am calling Terrence Mallick an inspiration and influence on the TFA perhaps only subtle but it seems it has been used in study in relation to the new Star wars trilogy.

Perhaps Kasdan and JJ both admire it although far from being the same it has that flavour

As Lucas was once going to direct Apocalypse Now early in his career, it has a double meaning. 😉

That seems pretty accurate based on the rumours and plot points we’ve gotten so far, although the last act is still somewhat hard to predict just based on a few short clips.

However this shot is not of Finn’s Tie Fighter crashing, it’s definitively a tree-line, most likely the same as we saw in the TV spot (see second image).

There’s a new interview with J.J. in Wired: http://www.wired.com/2015/11/star-wars-force-awakens-jj-abrams-interview

Pretty good read so far. A lot of stuff in there about the way the OT is structured and how VII fits into the continuum.

EDIT: Whoa dang, there’s also a high quality still of the Knights of Ren shot from the trailer.

Yeah I that noticed too, and now I’m even more curious as to who these guys actually are. In this picture you can make out their weapons a lot better than in the trailer, and it seems that Kylo is the only one with a lightsaber. All the other Knights of Ren seem to have their own weird self-made weapons as well.

It’s possible that Kylo might even be the only one with Force powers.
Either way, he’s definitively the top-dog in the gang, since he’s the only one sporting a proper lightsaber.

(The guy with the Axe, as well as the guy with the giant sword-thingy, reminds me of the early MacQuarrie concept drawings of Darth Vader.)

Has anyone seen this before?

Could that shot go with the space shots of the red light on a planet? Perhaps this is all part of firing the Starkiller?
