What's wrong with my DVD burner?

I just bought a DVD burner, and am having trouble with it.

I tried copying an already existing physical DVD that I had, and it worked perfectly.

But whenever I try to burn a DVD I've download from torrents, the DVDr will not play in any sort of DVD player.
It says it burned it successfully, but the DVD is shot. Nothing will read the disc.

Does anybody know what the trouble is?

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

When you say "nothing will read the disc", does that mean that your PC can't read it either?

YOUR DVD EXPERT IS HERE. WHAT PROGRAM DID YOU USE TO BURN THE DVD ??? MORE THAN LIKELY YOU JUST DID A STRAIGHT BURN. YOU ACTUALLY NEED A DVD AUTHORING PROGRAM LIKE NERO OR TOAST TO CONVERT YOUR DATA TO DVD FORM.

I am using a DVD burner by Pacific Digital, and "straight buring" with "Roxio Easy Media Creator".

I will try a more advanced program, authoring.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

ARE YOU ON A MAC OR pc? IT REALLY SHOULDN'T MATTER IF YOU ARE USING TOAST. IN TOAST CLICK ON ADVANCED. FROM THERE YOU WILL CLICK ON DVD-ROM (UDF). ALL YOU HAVE TO DO NOW IS DRAG YOUR MOVIE ONTO TOAST AND CLICK BURN. YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW FAST YOUR DVD BURNER WILL ACTUALLY BURN ALONG WITH THE SPEEDS THAT THE BLANK DVD-R/+R IS CAPABLE OF BEING BURNT. SELECT THE BURN SPEED AND CLICK CONTINUE. FOLLOW THE PROMPTS, AND IN ABOUT AN HOUR OR SO YOU'LL HAVE YOUR DVD.
