Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 177

I wanted to know more right away.

I can't say that about the last teasers.  They were all good but didn't inspire curiosity. This does. What happened in only 30 years to make the Rebel Alliance and the Force practically myths?  We're going in at the middle of the conflict--just like in Star Wars.

Officially excited. I happen to enjoy Abrams's films, so even if I don't feel the Star Wars fantasy magic, I'll feel his touch. And I'm damn looking forward to it.

I'm warning you guys, don't get your expectations up. The trailer is a window into the filmmaker's mind and what kind of story they are hoping to tell. All indications are that the story in this film will be poorly fleshed out. The characters will be kind of just there. The movie will be a sleekly produced but vapid Revenge of the Sith meets The Godfather Part 3 meets standard Hollywood blockbuster fare.

I seriously doubt that Abrams had a big say in the making of this trailer. Since when was movie trailer a "window into the filmmaker's mind"? It's almost exclusively been a reflection of current marketing trends.

Look at Terminator Genysis (If you dare..) The director certainly didn't intend to spoil the film by putting the reveal into the trailer, and he's on record saying he was 'disappointed' that Marketing did that.

Just for the sake of being nit-picky, it has been roughly half a century since the Jedi Knights were vanquished. And already in ANH (ca. 18 years after the purge) they had been mostly forgotten through the help of Imperial propaganda.

Just finally saw this one. I think they actually did the viewers a favor, allowing them to get pissed off at that stupid plot point in advance, rather than during the (truly terrible) movie.

Official IMAX Poster

Nice!

I like it, but I'm pretty sure that texture is either wood or hair. You know what? It's hair. The whole thing is hair.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Right running the trailer by the better half who hasn't been following the spoilers and isn't really a fan but aware of the older characters. He reads the main female character as a archeologist or scavenger. He saw the trooper as a "clone warrior" who has crashed on "Tatooine". The masked guy worships Vader and wants to continue his success. The girl and the 'clone" guy (later working for the rebels) ends up on the Falcon and the original characters fight is reduced to the level of a myth and Han is confirming that myth to be true. The masked guy can use the Force to hurt people. The Clone is going to fight the masked guy with a blue sword.

That's his take. It's a baton passing of a simple story.

His take is a textbook example of how the trailer worked the way a trailer should.  Other than an understandable miss on the trooper being a clone (because your better half probably goes outdoors occasionally)  ;-), he pretty much has all he needs to know before going into the theater.  The experience will be watching the story unfold and seeing how it all fits together.

Worth mentioning; We're talking about a trailer for the seventh film in a 40-year-old franchise.  A franchise that is far out of the realm of a nerd group or niche fan base.  This franchise, particularly the first film, is so pop-culturally significant that there may be no one who isn't at least aware of the base story and the major characters from the 1970s.

My wife has never seen any of the films and I've heard her reference Princess Leia and Darth Vader on several occasions.  People are complaining the trailer is too cryptic?  That may not even be possible.

My boss's 5 (6?) year old hasn't seen any of the films, but knows who stormtroopers and Vader are, and is extremely excited to go as one of the two for halloween.

I don't post here often, but I lurk every day.  One thing I've never seen brought up is what the trailer DIDN'T show, and my favorite thing about it:  no sprawling CG city landscapes.  The movie actually feels fairly small-scale (for Hollywood space opera) judging from the trailer.

The IMAX site says a different one each week.  Maybe the four fit together somehow.

Whatever the case, this one will be my DVD cover.  Fantastic!

So, Rey and BB-8 played with Wayne Szalinski's shrunk ray and ended up getting stuck in somebody's tangled, toy-cluttered hair?

I'm liking this movie more already.

 It's Chewie's pubic hair.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Just from what I've seen in all the trailers and stills, I suspect Rey will be the draw for me in the film. I'm digging the solitude of the remnants of the battle and the emptiness of her world.  Like Luke & Tatooine from the 70s, I prefer the desolation and loneliness.

This shot really put the hook in me.

Yeah, that shot grabbed me too. I'd be willing to bet someone on the film has a copy of this book.

Quick hits:

-I enjoyed the trailer quite a bit. I'm liking it more and more on my subsequent re-watches.

-I don't think the poster (the main one) is that horrible, but I definitely think it could have been better.

-I'm still on board the hype train, I got tickets for Thursday night at IMAX, and more tickets for Friday with a group of friends. I'm curious as to what the insanity levels will be (my IMAX theater doesn't do assigned seating)

-If, if, the Starkiller turns out to be a Death Star knockoff, that would be disappointing. But, before assuming it is, I think we need to actually see the movie before judging it

-I think that's my biggest takeaway: I'm going to suspend judgment either way until I actually see it. With that being said, I'm still super excited

-I'm not quite on board with Kyle Ren's voice in the trailer. It just wasn't quite right for me

-I also think people need to remember what constitutes Star Wars is different to different people. I think people here on this board generally have a narrow definition of what Star Wars is, which is fine, but also remember that that's not the case for a lot of people

-I'm pretty sure the body that Rey is crying over is Finn, not Han or Chewie

May the Force be with you.

Wow, so much negativity around a film that we haven't seen all of yet. I am just grateful that Lucas stepped down and anything would be better than what he would churn out.

I can't get JDownloader 2 to grab the 1080p trailer from Apple Trailers. Those bastards. If anyone has it or knows of a program that might have better luck obtaining it, please PM me.

Thanks! :)

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.
