The new trailer looked strangely un-Star Wars to me. There's just something about it that doesn't look right. I'm cautiously optimistic about the film regardless.
So, I fired up the projector to watch the new trailer and there was a power outage just as I was in the middle of it - that was a pretty dramatic moment - I'm watching the trailer and suddenly crack and I'm immersed in complete darkness.
I really hope the lamp in my projector survived this (you're not supposed to turn the projector on for a couple of hours after it's been turned off, so I can't test it right now).
Okay, just watched the trailer a good dozen times. I'm not going to spoil any specifics, just give my reactions to the overall effect it had on me.
First of all, I noticed a lot more JJ-isms such as extreme closeups and a few lens flares. Dynamic camera, very in-your-face stuff. It felt most similar to 2009 Star Trek in style, and though that style worked for the Trek Reboot, I don't think it works so well for a continuing story, especially not Star Wars.
I liked a few shots in the first seconds of the trailer, one in particular screamed classic Star Wars and gave me hope for more in the film. but most of the rest of the shots could have come out of any big budget action film of the last several years, for all the effect it had on me.
The colors feel off, as I think JJ prefers a more saturated look than exists in any of the OT films. He's definitely not out to recapture the look of the originals, so I wonder why he even bothered to shoot on film. All in all, it was a disappointment.
One bright note (haha) is the music. If nothing else, we get a new Star Wars soundtrack from the Williams, and that alone is worth the price of admission for me.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I'm not as familiar with JJA's style, I've seen Mission Impossible III-V, Armageddon, and Forever Young. The latter two I haven't seen in a long time, and from memory Armageddon was an easily forgettable experience. But that said I really enjoyed MI-GP and MI-RN. But there were still issues with them - I didn't believe for a second that someone can hang onto a passenger-jet by their fingertips while it takes off. That was just as bad as Indy surviving a nuclear explosion in a lead-lined fridge. Yes they might have filmed it eight times with Cruise on the outside of the airplane, but even the world's strongest stunt-double wouldn't be able to do it without a harness - his fingers would be ripped clean off. At least the whole movie wasn't like that though, unlike Man of Steel which was absolutely horrible IMHO.
I hope there's less implausible action sequences in this film.

I'm all for a new look for these movies. There are some pretty extreme stylistic shifts from trilogy to trilogy and even between individual films so far. And this beats the pants off of that stupid slow zoom on every other shot in the prequels.
J.J. directed Armageddon?
Where were you in '77?
I really liked the teaser last winter or whenever, but this new trailer sucks. Looks like a non-Star Wars movie that happens to include previous Star Wars references for no particular reason.

Oops he did the screenplay not direction. I guess the only films he directed that I've seen are the MI movies.

I got mines ready on December 18th at 11:30 PM it's reserved seating so that's great I also got to bring a friend along so that's great too. So I got my Jedi robes ready and movie tickets ready.
What’s worse George Lucas changing the OT or selling the rights to Disney

Agreed, although not on the trailer's music. That's clearly not Williams, even if it uses some of his themes. I hope the movie's score is a lot more classical.
I must admit I don't like the trailer as much as the teasers.

Not bad, at least its second part (I don't know who edited the trailer, but starting with "Who are you" "I'm nobody" it's the cheesiest thing one could do :D).
I didn't read spoilers on the plot, but by the trailer alone, it seems to me it may be a bit more than the usual blockbuster, which is good. I hope Kasdan won't let me down.
Stylistically, if they are going to keep this color grading (which is consistent to the new poster), I don't like that a lot of scenes are so much saturated: very cartoon-like, much like the PT. Also, it looks like the Falcon is now decorated with christmas lights :D
Contrast is again too high, making most of the non-cgi scenes still look fake. It's a shame.
As expected, Captain Asthma looks like crap on screen: his armor is so shiny that he literally embodies the "lens flares"' concept :D

I thought Phasma's gender could be considered spoiler :P

I don't like it less than the teasers. But it didn't step up my excitement the way the second teaser did. Actually, I think the best one by far was the comic-con behind the scenes clip. I just rewatched it and it still gives me goosebumps, whereas the new trailer didn't.
Yeah, I agree - the behind the scenes clip is definitely the most goose-bump-inducing thing released so far - it gave me hope for the movie. This new trailer did nothing for me and I don't much like what little of the story it revealed. And all of the spaceship shots still look like 90s video game cutscenes, which is very disappointing to me.
PG-13

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.
I'm sure it will be PG-13, but that's not really confirmation. The online retailers still don't have anything listed, and they probably just need to put something on the tickets that are printed.

I thought there was a suspicious amount of lens flare during my school PE lessons.
Just watched the trailer. It doens't feel very Star Wars-y, I agree with you. I didn't like the way it was cut and the music was very weird for me. Well, only 2 more months.
And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.
I'm not offended by the new trailer. Good sign, I guess?
A few lens flares too many, but I've had time to get ready for that.
So a whole lotta shit will like fly around all over the place, but oddly none of that will happen in space. Spoiler?

Removed shot from trailer that refutes this ^ statement LOL
