What do you HATE about the EU? — Page 35

Overall, I hated the old EU. Insane clones with consecutive vowels, Palpatine clones, Dark Luke, etc.

I didn't see them complaining when the EU overwrote DROIDS which had A-Wings pre-ANH. The Rebellion is a large organization with many different cells. The main fleet is mostly composed of X-Wings. That there are different cells with access to different ships makes sense on a galactic scale. The Battle of Endor saw the gathering of many different cells into one massive fleet to take on the Second Death Star.

This can't be repeated enough. There's a reason it's called the Rebel ALLIANCE. Endor is the only time we see all the members of this alliance.

If by 'massive fleet' you mean a meager collection of barely military craft such as Blockade Runners, transports, a Medical Frigate and some converted luxury cruise ships along with a handful of fighters, then yes, they did.

;)

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I'm not surprised per say, but I find it funny that they bumped TCW up to film level canonicity, but still threw out all the TCW branded books and comics.

I like about 40-45% of the old EU, and that's mostly the stuff that was written before TPM's release. I hate the rest of it.

As for the nuEU, I read Heir to the Jedi, the Princess Leia comic miniseries, and the first three issues of the Darth Vader comic -- mediocre wastes of time, all of them. I've had my fill of shitty SW stories from the old EU, and I'm not going to play the battered wife who keeps going back to her abusive husband; I'm officially done with future SW tie-in fiction.

If you haven't, do yourself a favor and read Mathew Stover's and James Luceno's stuff, as well as Kenobi.

Sorry, but I'm deadset against reading any novels set inside the PT era (or NJO or Legacy eras, for that matter). My policy is if a novel can't fit in my personal canon, I'm not going to devote time and effort towards reading it, regardless of how well written it is.

Besides, at this point, I'm pretty much done with reading anything from the old EU, too; once I'm through A. C. Crispin's Han Solo Trilogy and Zahn's last three novels, the only SW books I'll ever read are going to be the ones I've already read and taken a liking to.  There's too many classic authors and novels out there waiting to be read, and I've put off reading them for Star Wars long enough.

Luke Skywalker and The Shadows of Mindor takes place before the thrawn trilogy and it's beyond amazing.

I read part of Shadows of Mindor. Frankly, I quickly grew bored with everything that didn't directly involve Luke and ended up skipping through most of it.

You missed out on the great bits where James Earl Jones fights an army of Time Lords.

At the same time, I do feel as if Filoni doesn't really give a s**t if he messes with continuity or not. I'm mostly referring to The Clone Wars. The fact that that is now the canon version of that time period is kind of dumb. The incompatible Clone Wars events from the comics, books, and micro-series were much more believable and just better thought out, for the most part.

Actually, Filoni did whatever he could to stick to continuity. Things like returning Maul were things that Lucas insisted on. It's Lucas who doesn't really give a s**t about continuity.

I hated that Dooku fought Anakin in TCW. ROTS clearly implied that this was their first duel since AOTC. I also hate how Obi-Wan was always fighting Grievous. He obviously seemed surprised that Grievous had four arms and could use lightsaber in ROTS, but in TCW Obi-Wan saw that all the time.

Not enough people read the EU.

The old EU was just unwieldy. I couldn't get into it. I actually tried to read some wiki logs on characters and events. The entries were novel length.

I restricted myself to the " Tales of the Jedi" and "KoTOR" eras. It was simple and easy enough to follow.

I'd hope Disney keeps a tighter hold on the new EU so it doesn't get that convoluted again.

Unfortunately, the Story Group that's in charge of the nuEU is pretty much made up of the same folks who ran the old EU, so I fully expect it to collapse into another shoddy mess of bad writing, poor characterization*, and ludicrous retconning within a decade or two.

*Truth be told, I think it's already succumbed to the first two.

This so much. Immediately after ROTJ, soul-sucking aliens invade, then an orange-uniformed woman takes over the Empire, then a "Dark Jedi" almost becomes a dark side god, then a blue-skinned alien takes over the Empire, then Palpatine returns in a clone body, then Palpatine returns in another clone body, then a star-destroying superweapon shows up, then an alien from another dimension attacks, then some aliens from another galaxy attack, then some bugs attack, then one of Leia and Han's children goes dark, then a planet of Sith and a tentacled mind-controlling monster attack, then 100 years later the galaxy is ruled by another Sith army.

Well that's.... A lot of nonsense.... That happened. Oh my.

Why do I get the sense that it doesn't sound  any less dumb in the actual books?

In my own more-or-less humble opinion, some of the above is better executed than darklordoftech makes it sound. The iron pyrite still outweighs the gold, however.

That "blue-skinned alien" was a GREAT MAN. Show some respect.

Anyway, has anyone brought up yet how every era with stories set in it over the span of thousands and thousands of years seems to have an Empire analogue and a Republic analogue, complete with similar logos? Because I really hate that.

Yeah they didn't exactly break a lot of new ground.
