Drew Struzan? No thanks. — Page 4

I'm a big fan of Struzan, but it would also be cool to see a new poster from some of the other original artists - Tom Jung, Roger Kastel, etc.

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” - George Lucas

I highly reccomend the movie "Drew: The Man Behind the Poster" on Netflix.

One of the things I don't like about his work is that he clearly paints from photos and stills of the movie. The SE posters had weird inconsistencies in them.

Star Wars had Leia from Empire. With Empire he used a still of the Emperor from Jedi and had Darth Vader's Tie Fighter in the centre. For Jedi he reused the steps from the lightsaber duel in Empire... again. Why would he do this?
I used to have this problem until I realized that they're bigger pieces of one giant poster, so the things being from the wrong movie are actually because they're part of the same trilogy.

For a poster that is obviously not the final one, I find it nice. Even if it's not the best thing Drew drew... (no, I'm not ashamed!)

Could it be that he's using a similar concept for the new ones? You know, the new poster seems oddly hanging on the left, like it may continue with another one on the right. Maybe next to Han there are actually other two figures: Luke and Leia.

That poster isn't the movie's poster... it's a teaser poster specifically painted for Disney's D23 Expo. Why do you think it says "December 18"  below the title, while credits and company logos are missing?

Drew makes a lot of promotional art. Go on his site, and you'll see he's done a lot of stuff for Star Wars that wasn't the official posters.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

It's not a great picture, but I think it looks pretty cool. Most importantly it looks like it could be part of an even cooler, larger art. Maybe I'm crazy/silly and it's just some undie art, but it stood out to me as something very nice and very Star Warsy.

It's a triptych where each panel supposed to represent each film.
If it was a one shot trilogy poster, it wouldn't bother me. As it stands, it bugs the heck outta me.

Ray you realise you can't always blame the artist, the artist has to create what the client wants. It would be inconsistent to have the original emperor for instance in that painting. Leia doesn't really do much in the original (besides ensure the plans get to the rebels) so it's not surprising he uses a more active Leia from Empire in the SW side. It is intended to split into three of course which is why there are 3 areas for movie names, but it's also intended to be a one piece artwork.

Oh, don't get me wrong -- it's not a bad piece of art. I'm just not overtly awestruck by Struzan's style.

Leia's image in SW is one of the most iconic in pop culture! And she gets plenty of action in during the escape from the Death Star. I mean, someone had to save their skins!

There's a thought - did literally no one else do posters for the prequels?

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

No one else did actual painted posters but they all got photoshoped teasers:

I could just as easily used this as my example for when I knew the prequels were terrible.  I thought that was an idiotic poster as soon as it was released.

A textbook example of Lucas and his complete lack of subtlety. All mystery of story has been removed and the whole piece suffers because of it. Teasers should be simple, but even that one was overdone.

I could never reconcile where the kid was coming from.  Unless his name is little Annie Stubblebine, he has no reason to be mid-stride a foot away from that wall. However, Lucas needed a wall for the shadow of Vader (leave your imaginations at the door) so just Photoshop him next to a wall.

Light sources for the shadows from the doorway, kid's head, kid's feet, and Vader all different?  Must be those twin suns.

Terrible.

I bet Struzan could've made the basic idea work, though.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”
