STAR WARS Rebels Season 1: Light Saber fix and Vader Red EYE removal (Part Finished - WIP)

Folks,

I just wanted to you all aware that I will be correcting the sabers in SW Rebels.  I simply put can not stand the way they look currently and I can not stand Vader’s Red Eyes have returned.  I love the series enough to spend some time with these cartoons.   Below are some examples of what I plan to do.

Any Thoughts or Suggestions?

You know this is all based on Ralph McQuarrie stuff right? You might lose street cred around here...

Well you don't have to download it then.  Lol.  You know there are a lot of other forums out there where it is a bitch fest about the direction to use fencing type sabers.  I think I will take this there.

Does Vader really look like that in the show?
And is the aliasing in the Vader pic actually in the show?
Looks terrible.

As for your project, I can understand your intentions. I think it's cool that they are using Mcquarrie sabers (didn't know that!) but I can see people who are fans of this stuff wanting visual continuity with the movies.
I'm sure many people will appreciate your efforts!

Yeah.  The sabers really got to me.  As well of the ridicules decision to to make vader's eyes red.  That alone makes no sense.  I can understand the funny warping effect of his actual helmet but the red eyes??? Dumb. If  Lucas wanted his eyes red he would have vader eyes red in EBS and  ROTJ and even ROTS

I am not really going to change anything else.

The aliasing is not from the show I just grabbed some picks from Google and quickly scoped out those stills.  z  I am waiting for the blu Ray release for my actual source material which releases this September

I just googled Vader from Rebels. I love the red eyes! Much more in line with SW'77. And the idea to go with Mcquarries lightsabers is cool in my book.
The show looks really stupid though.

He had red eyes in SW. And who cares about Lucas and ROTS?

To each his own.  I don't think the show is stupid.  It's actually pretty good.  They got  billy dee Williams and James earl jones.  For the voice acting.

Check out the "birth of Vader" scene in ROTS. They deliberately had his visual eye display as bright red to match his ANH "red lens". Yet for some unknown reason, they chose not to use the red lenses in the ROTS helmet, but went with a more ROTJ yellow lens. As this show is to  bridge the gap between ROTS & ANH, as is set just a few years before ANH, it certainly isn't a "dumb" move to have him with the red lenses.

And most of that bitching is because they don't even realise that the whole show is stylised on the original McQuarrie/ Johnston designs. The Clone wars characters  were stylised on the Thunderbirds puppets qand they never seemed to mind that series so much. At least Rebels is based upon the look of something actually connected to the Star Wars universe and it's development, not just ripped off from a kids puppet show

Then why did you change vaders's eyes in ANH revisited?

Not because i thought the red eyes were dumb. ;)

Actually it was more down to the fact that the red lenses used were not very well tinted. It caused the viewer to be able to see the face behind the mask. Back in '77 you weren't sure if Vader was man or machine or what he was ( which the prequels ruin if you watch them in order), but seeing a human face behind the eyes kind of spoiled that thanks to home video. When i started ANH:R, that was one of the first things i changed. It helped mask the face behind it. I was still learning the tools at the time as i had never touched any grading or fx software before and just plain darkening the eyes didn't yield good enough results. Plus, the colouring is so messed up on the DVDs/ BluRays that his lenses aren't red throughout. It was either alter the shots where you could see how red the lenses were, which was easy with desaturation, or mask every shot and recolour them red throughout. Again, at the time, i was still learning and wasn't sure how to accomplish that.  Another reason was to give continuity with the colour of the other two helmets from ESB & ROTJ ( i was going to remove the yellow tint from ROTJ). Now i know how to remove the face but keep the lenses intact and have them consistent throughout, and that i'm not going to alter them in ROTJ, the red eyes will be back when i do the HD version.

sounds good. i'll download it. instead of the whole season, maybe just save yourself the time and just do the Siege of Lothal episode (season 2 ep 1) as a standalone, since it's already kind-of formatted as such.. and features MUCH more Vader. just a suggestion... :)

Make Kanan's lightsaber yellow and the inquisitor's blue and I might be interested*.

*Well, as interested as I can be in a show that failed to impress me.

strange you have a problem with the lightsabers. I remember they did a small Youtube feature in the lead up to the Rebels premiere where they discussed how they painstakingly tried to recreate the look of the sabers from the original film.

I've not watched the show, but I've seen enough pics to know that if they were trying to make the sabers look like they did in SW, they failed.
They're obviously based on the McQuarrie paintings. And that's pretty cool.

in the video he was referring to, they were trying to mimicking the look of the way the light sabers flickered in the original, not the overall shape of the sabers themselves.

I appreciate the homage to McQuarrie that the lightsabers are, but when you watch the show, and you see how thin they are, it just looks really dumb, especially when they fight.

Don't have a problem with Vader's eyes. Red lenses look cool.

I do have a problem with the mixing of Vader's voice though.  Obviously it's James Earl Jones still, but it doesn't sound quite like Vader, almost as if their is some weird thin, restricted quality to it.  His voice sounds much better in the actual OT.  And I doubt it his age that is causing it.  I just cringed so much during the season 2 premiere.

If the Bluray has isolated dialogue, it would great if this could be fixed.  Not really sure if I'm the only who's noticed.

Mabey. But you have to understand, the dude is old.  Your voice changes the more you age.

Are you going to rotoscope the ANH Vader helmet in there too?

I already did.  Anh still needs a lot of work before I release it.   It looks comparable to ANH work in in ANH revisited.   Was a lot quicker to do with mocha's planar tracker.

i agree - the voice is mixed weird. almost like watered down.. maybe they did that for the young audience... ?? if someone could fix that and the sabers in the season 2 premiere, i'd probably crap my pants.
