So, I just made a color correction LUT for the Grindhouse release in DaVinci Resolve. It's a quick solution to fix some color degradation problems and can be applied in almost every modern video editor, like Premiere or Final Cut.

Here are some examples with before/after comparisons: http://i.imgur.com/0w17vDs.jpg

And here's the LUT for download:

I am not quite satisfied with this results yet because I think it degrades the greens a little too much (see Bobba Fett).
I will give more details of how I did it later so that people with more experience can try to do it better than I did.

Your example is on the left, my tinkering is on the right. I agree that there is a bit too much blue in the shadows of your examples, but other than that I'd say it's pretty spot on.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

When you do the cockpit shots like you have here...

You can not just color correct this as a complete picture.

You need to color correct the background (Fake Background) and the foreground Luke in cockpit separately. They were never matched in the first place properly the foreground is totally different colors to the background so they need matching and treating as separate entities... Which they are.

You could class that as revisionism but I doubt they intended the layers to be that different from one another so you decide if you want it to look good or not.

The process you have done could also be classed as revisionism though depending on which layer you were color correcting the shot to. If one layer was correct and the other was not then you are effectively lumping it all together to create a *new version* and altering the layer that was correct so In my book they need to be treated separately to achieve the proper result.

Wow. Nicely done.

Are you planning on doing a bluray release? Cause I'd love to see this.

Like I stated in my first post: No, I am not, this simply a fan project for fun, I do not have any video editing skills whatsoever and even if I did my computer would probably melt as it is rather ancient. It can however be a useful guide for whomever wishes to go ahead with such an undertaking.

Was hoping you'd change your mind. Looks great though. :)

The Blue Color Correction looks great, similar to the 2011 Grade. I wish the 2011 grade wouldn’t get so much flack, it really isn’t the bad. Just be careful with your work and make sure it doesn’t get stolen.

What do you mean stolen? no one here is allowed to state these as “their property” Any edit made belongs to the respected copyright holder, in this case Disney/Lucasfilm. saying “Don’t steal my work” makes no sense, as you did not make it, just adjusted it, which in no way makes you entitled to own it.

Also on another hand the 2004 master (2011 Blu-ray) is terribly color graded, it has crushed blacks, unnatural hues, blues where there shouldn’t be any blues, and don’t even get me started on the magenta flashes.

First of all I mean I don’t want people to steal his color correction and label it as their own, so calm down bud. The color grade also has it’s downsides, but I like it. The only thing I have problems with really is the magenta flames. There’s no need to take a verbal dump on my opinion because you don’t like it.
