are there any high-res copies available? I think the Blu-Rays come with standard def videos.

I didn't know that the Gaiam Fleischer Superman BD was such a hopeless mess.

It looks like there are some 1080p up-scales on youtube.

Perhaps, up-scaling the DVD video with Video Enhancer (Super Resolution) and then using some sort of dust / scratch removal software, like Neat Video, might be an option for restoration?
So did we ever finish all the audio patches to correct the errors? I always held off buying the WB standalone as it was the same copy being reissued alone, but apparently they did fix some of the errors but not all.
I'll have to check the difference between WB and Diamond audio tracks, but the WB will likely be better as they had higher gen materials to work with and the Diamond is still coming from optical.
This is likely the best source we will ever have as WB seems to have no desire to ever reissue this in 1080p. The only way would be for an Archive BD with errors fixed. I'll see if I can drop them a line.

I have no skills to make this happen but I would love to support such an effort.
I just purchased the wb set and hope to see what they may have corrected. Also realized the older Image disc is a straight port of their LD and has PCM. If anyone has this how does it sound compared to the Bosko? The big difference will come due to the wb having the master material with greater dynamic range but the Bosko already sounds very good for print transfer.

One thing I read about these which I couldn’t verify was that, in the original first cartoon, Clark’s line at the end of the first scene is, “Chief, don’t you think that’s a dangerous job for a woman?” On all the editions I have, it’s just “dangerous job.” I’d be curious to see if that’s true.
Here’s the Max Fleischer’s Superman 1941-1942 (Warner Bros 2008) set I used for most of the video.
Yeah that has been edited if the woman bit is left out. I remember because the first VHS tape I ever owned as a kid was a tape of public domain cartoons that contained one Mickey Mouse cartoon(I wasn’t aware Disney ever let those lapse)and it ended with that exact short and it was the first time I was Superman in anything and I watched it to death and the woman part was there in the public domain print I saw. So if the version of the short you have doesn’t have that part of the line in it then it had been edited.
My ratings for the Star Wars movies. EP1 4.5/10. Ep2 4.0/10. EP3 2.0/10. EP4 9.5/10. EP5 10/10 EP6 8.5/10 EP7 8.3/10.

There doesn’t seem to be much info on this. (What is it’s source? Is it an up-rez project? Is it a new scan?)
EDIT:
Just finished a DL to watch it in HD. Definitely an up-rez (lots of jaggies). Stepping through the frames, it shows a 1-2-3-3 [frame] cadence (on zoom shots, so animation-holds won’t be misinterpreted). It shouldn’t have any, as it is a 24fps video (from YouTube). A closer look reveals frame “3” is repeated, in place of frame “4”, which is dropped! Very bad. Color-wise, it has the same technicolor primaries-saturated look of the “Max Fleischer’s Superman 1941-1942”, Warner Bros., 2008, of the Original Post. The other DVD sets have non-primary-saturated and weak color. Finally, it is uniformly widescreen-stretched, but not all the way to 16:9, hence the remaining area is pillar-boxed.
Uh, they’re already on bluray.

Thanks, but I already knew that.

Oh, sorry about the obscurity. It was for the humor value.
The answer to your question is “yes” (if I read the thread) … only because I wrote about 1/3 of it.
I was replying to timemeddler, not you, Spaced Ranger. I know you wrote a lot of this thread. If timemeddler had read the rest of the thread, he would have known why his comment was useless to the topic, being that you already knew about the blu-ray, and the fact that it’s really crappy.

Oops, pardon me . . | . . a case of context confusal with a touch of clever-itis. |
Makes perfect sense now. (Too bad it was the waste of a great smiley.)
Do not worry. That smiley will find it’s destiny eventually, and I always like a good misunderstanding every once in a while. Quite entertaining at times.

looked good to me on my 7 foot screen. have they been tweaked from original or something?
Oh, hi there, everyone! I finally decided to take another stab at this project. I’m going to try to do one video a week. The first one is up now. I’d like to put the videos somewhere for download, too, if I can figure out a handy place.
Without further ado:
Fleischer Studios Superman (Mild-Mannered Edition)
I’d love for this thread to stay open for technical discussion, if people have suggestions. I’d really like this project to be as definitive as I’m able, accepting that it’s a hobby and we don’t have access to very great sources.
I have been online EBAY trying to obtain the 16MM prints of these and so far have lost TWO! UGG…Low priced and missed one and then another was overbid to the point of ridicioulsness. Yes, I love this idea!

davextreme, would you be able to put the original uncompressed files for this on MEGA or another filesharing site?
YouTube’s compression is terrible on anything lower than 720p. It specifically has a lot of trouble with macroblocking (square image artifacts across the screen) and edge aliasing (jagged edges on objects). These two greatly degrade the image quality.
Yeah I’ll see what I can do. Next week, maybe.
Any chance of The Spleenier or The Demon as a place? I really would love to enjoy what you have done.

archive.org would be a good place to set up a download page for this.
Archive.org is a good idea. I don’t want to submit anything until the project is done in case I want to make any changes to the videos or whatever as I’m working through them. I can put them on myspleen, too.
In the meantime I’ve uploaded m4v copies of the videos to my ftp server and put a link to download each one on the Tumblr page for each video. They have some metadata in them so if you copy them into iTunes or wherever it should sort them correctly. I’ll have to take them down if the bandwidth goes crazy but I would assume most people are fine with YouTube.
I also uploaded fresh copies to YouTube from the master file instead of using Final Cut Pro’s YouTube share button, which I think should up the quality a little bit. I also added captions.
I think we all would like to have this work in the best quality or honestly, whats the point. So, what would be the best place to obtain your hard work with NO compression?

Hmm, the files will fill up my dropbox. Send me a PM with an email address and I’ll try to send a Mail Drop link.
Just to be clear, these all started from DVD sources and I’m not cleaning the picture up in any way, just making cuts and splices.
