I say KEEP the cue marks:)

I'm pretty sure he won't. For the same reason he doesn't want to keep the orange streaks.

Things are great - deep in color correction.  Will post more videos soon.  And no, cue marks are for projectionists, print-based, and not part of the negative, therefore will be excised.

How does one get rid of cue marks? Some painstaking photoshop work?

If you have multiple prints with cue marks in different places, then it is relatively easy to remove them.

If not, then it is a matter of replacing them with data from surrounding frames and ensuring it matches in seamlessly.

No Photoshop required, there are a swathe of film restoration tools for this kind of thing, it is relatively straightforward.

Huh, I had thought cue marks had standard locations across all prints. This is quite reassuring.

Different labs have different marks and they are not always in the exact same spot on the film.

Up until the late 60s the negative was often punched, in which case the marks will be the same on all prints, then you have to pull the information from surrounding frames. The reel changeover points are often on fairly static shots, so again, this is rarely a problem.

Is there any sense in petitioning Lucasfilm/Disney to release the Mike Verta 4K version in theaters this fall?

Author
Time

Not really. Discounting the fact that it's not done, they already have a 4K version, and they don't really have any reason to get another, especially given the useless gesture that was the earlier petitions to Lucasfilm.

 Um, what?

The ones they recently screened, I guess. But, as savestarwars.com said (http://web.archive.org/web/20140312150335/http://savestarwars.com/specialeditionfail.html )

What is more, the Special Edition version here was only scanned from the film negatives at 1080p. This is to be the new digitial master for the films, and all of the new ILM work was done from this scan. So, if you ever see the films in theatres again, it will be from 1080 lines of resolution, never mind a 2K scan (I guess an 8K scan is just crazy talk at this point).

So, if true, they're just sh***y 2004's upscales, right? Is it good enough for them?

Is it good enough for them?  You're talking about the same company that thought the GOUT was "good enough".

I was referring to the Reliance 4K master. Maybe that doesn't count.

Does it definitely exist?  Is it definitely the OOT?

I thought these were the kinds of questions that the ridiculous 4k thread utterly failed to answer.

Yes to the first, ? to the second, although according to my screenshot comparisons (now buried in that thread) the released material appears to be an at least partially new cleanup of the original negatives, and not an IP or IN. And that's pretty much the end of any useful speculation on the matter, at least in my opinion.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I'm fairly certain it exists, but whether it's the OOT or not is, in mine and Disney's eyes, not important. They have something they can call STAR WARS 4K and, as history would show us, no amount of signatures on a petition will matter to them to such an extent that they would go and get another one just for appeasement's sake.

We miss you, mverta!

I've seen your restoration videos countless times. The information concealed within is so educational and gives me hope for the better. You go into details so precisely and nonchalant, it's like listening to my spiritual mentor.

The work you accomplish is the best I've probably ever seen from a guy which seriously understands what he's doing. I also figured out that you work as a composer and it's just inspiring, really inspiring listening to your comprehension of the work you do!

A little fan-talk from my side. Hoping to see and hear more analytical videos if you get the time.

I especially like the "Reality Check", because it's so fucking true. You said that word and it's appropirate.

I'm so tired of modern production values and marketing decisions of the art form I learned to love and relate to it with life-hearth at young age. It's literally getting teared apart. I learnt things like effects of primary colors and their use's, it seems things like that are just thrown away and worth nothing anymore. Same with music (compressed to hell), the same happens with colors right now (it's like black and white all over again, but in teal and orange).

I hope your masterful work will be able to chance some decisions made soon. If not, at least a little bit.

Btw I hope not getting ripped apart for posting that. I've started a little blog to rant about modern movie colors on this page: http://color-rant.blogspot.ch/
