Do people still use DVD/Bluray players do they? How quaint!

Yes, some still do; myself included.

Is your TV calibrated to sRGB then? Did you calibrate it relative to the input signal from the HTPC or did you calibrate it independently? Which probe do you use?

Are you feeding it from a playback unit (e.g., the Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Monitor) or directly from your video card?

Video cards are damn unreliable when it comes to critical viewing on a calibrated setup.

I sure hope you're doing things right considering the amount of dick measuring you have going on in your post.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Sorry my post was meant to be light hearted. You have showed me how inadequate my setup is.

I am just so used to doing without silver discs, that I am surprised these days when people talk about them.

No offence intended.

Dang, that was your cue to trash-talk CRT's! Oh well, maybe next time.

None taken, I was kind of going the same direction as you. Especially as far as DVDs go. The only real use for DVDs that I have is SD television shows that will probably never get a better release. No use burning DVDs, as the DL ones are unreliable, and the equivalent hdd space is negligible.

But, actually, I just bought a BR burner this year, thanks mostly to all the fantastic quality encodings from members of this site and similar groups. The 25-50gb files were quickly filling up my hdd space, and I figured I might as well store them (or their backup copies, in some cases) with nice cases on the shelf. I end up grabbing the better quality versions of things like Harmy's project (making this an on topic post ;) ) instead of settling for a 8 gb lower bitrate encoding.

The whole point was that AVCHD is meant to allow you to watch HD quality video on a standalone player if you don't have a Blu burner.  If you aren't using a standalone player, watch a higher quality version.

Hey, it's no problem. I don't think your setup is inadequate. Very few people (relative to the world population) truly need calibrated setups for critical viewing.

I'm sorry for missing that your post was meant to be light-hearted. We get a good number of new users around here who come in and start talking trash about what they perceive as antiquated, etc. and I mistakenly thought you were one of them.

Been trying to get these fine versions for ages and now my eldest kid is nearly 5 and beginning the first stages to watching films - and understanding them, I really and urgently need these films ASAP. So when I saw they were also available as torrents I was over the moon.

Always found JDownloader too fiddly and didnt really understand it so torrents it is...but could someone help me??? please????

The Torrents for all for all of them just says "finding peers" and not actually downloading anything :(

I am super desperate for these versions I really am. If anyone can upload the torrents of these fine films and fine versions, please, please, please upload them.

Incidently, the versions I am downloading are as follows:

ANH - 17.8GB

ESB - 19.7GB

ROTJ - 7.87GB (Is this right?)

Looks like you found the correct versions.

Do the sites you're downloading them from say there are peers? Specifically, seeders? If so, you might have an issue with your firewall. Try unblocking the port that your client says is being used. Failing that, try getting those same versions from another site. The most popular sites out there, that might rhyme with "lickbass", for instance, would have more people on the same torrent than a flybynight russian website.

That was my custom-made troll-bait lovingly crafted to target you ;)

Agreed about CRT's, though.  I spent a large part of last weekend with the kids cooped up in a vacation rental with one of those crappy 16x9 SD-CRT's, with a bottom-shelf DVD player putting comb artifacts over everything, and a weird zoom setting cropping off huge amounts of the edges of the image, and yet... I just couldn't stop gaping in awe of the perfect motion handling on this setup that probably cost $100 total, outperforming (in this one metric, 3:2 pulldown notwithstanding) what I've seen in ridiculously-priced OLED demo units.

Thanks again, Harmy. I love what you've done with the colours. What did you use as a reference for the colours?

This seems relevant to the ESB theatrical experience, and therefore the DeEd.

I'm on my way to Prague where I've been invited to attend a 35mm screening of TESB. I expect it will be the 97SE but it should still be pretty cool.

OK, here's the report: Even though it was the '97 SE as expected, even though I was sitting in the 9th row and the tallest guy in the theater was sitting right in front of me, so I was in dire need of binoculars/periscope, it was still an amazing experience.

I noticed that Hoth was surprisingly white and Dagobah surprisingly blue but over-all, I'd say the colors in ESB v 2.0 are pretty good.

Going into more detail, Hoth was very white (actually almost yellowish) in the highlights and very blue in the shadows. Dagobah was pretty much blue/cyan tinted throughout. One other thing I noticed was that all the "empire shots" (abord Star Destroyers, AT-ATs) were distinctly teal-orange tinted. Another thing was that Vader's lightsaber was more orange that red and Luke's was pretty desaturated blue (with no hint of teal). And over-all, the freezing chamber shots were less saturated than I'd expect.

Another important thing I was watching out for were matte-boxes in non-recomped shots. I definitelly saw some because I was paying close attention and looking for them, so they are visible on 35mm prints, but they were nowhere near as obvious as on the BD and other home-video releases.

But we are talking about the '97 SE here and also the whole thing was clearly too dark (very little shadow detail to be seen), so I don't think the bulb brightness was quite right, so this is no definitive proof of anything, but I still made some interesting observations and I definitely had a good time :-)

I'd also like to point out that I typed the previous msg on my phone after having drunk 5 glasses of wine in abouz two hours, so you'll have to exuse the typos :-)
