Here is another tough cleanup section, with smoke and flash screens:
=========================================
Note : The Blue artifact will still be there.

Here is the cleaned up version by itself:

Note : Temporary colors, and not cropped. We are emphasizing the cleanup here.

What methods do you use for the cleanup? Is it a purely digital cleanup? It looks really impressive.
Also in terms of color, how accurate are the 97 special editions? Was the color palette altered even then or are they pretty close to the 77 original?
Looks nice. Why is it that you'll keep the blue artifact?
Because it's not your usual wear and tear but something that shipped with the prints.
See this thread about objects that were on the original print:
=====================================
Although a lot of the links posted by the previous team member, -1, are missing. We might post some updated versions as we get to them to reproduce them.
Team Negative1
The colors from the 97SE vary from the other prints we have, and are a loose reference.
Check out the comparisons here:
====================

The LPP and other sources we have are accurate enough.
Cleanup is several steps, including physical cleanup on the print with chemical solutions by hand. Then it is scanned, and commercial software is used for the remaining parts.
We are also replacing damaged frames with better sources, and higher resolution scans of frames with lost details (mostly starfields).

@ Team negative1
I noticed you were also comparing your scan to the 1986 Japanese LD. I recently watched it, and it seemed much cleaner and to have more color than the GOUT, despite the somewhat lower resolution. Is this source considered accurate in terms of color?
We are not actually using the laserdiscs as references, but just presenting them for comparison.
There are quite a few threads about the colors on the laserdiscs, so asking there, would be a better idea.
Some of the shots do match up pretty well at times, and others do not. It varies with the laserdisc versions, and when they were released.
We will be doing an extensive color correction when the time comes.
Team Negative1
We'll be posting a short clip with the orange marks in them:
====================================
http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-Tantives-Orange-Items-Thread-other-unintended-objects/topic/13355/
Along with the cue marks that will remain. There is a chance of doing a 'Plus' version without the marks and further cleanup in it. We haven't decided on that yet.
Team Negative1
Maybe somebody already posted this, but the blue artifact also appears in the Japanese Special Collection Laserdisc from 1986.
I speak only for myself of course but I personally would be all for a version without cue marks, if it's not a lot of work.
When we were working on our version and I was cleaning individual frames, I remember reading that the orange marks were the glue used to hold the film splices together, since most of them were at the scene breaks.
<span class=“Italics”>MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
<span class=“Bold”>JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.</span></span>
<span class=“Italics”>MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
<span class=“Bold”>Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.</span></span>
<span class=“Italics”>JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.</span>

He's referring to these orange marks: http://fd.noneinc.com/Glitch/starwars-tantiveorangeerrors/starwars-tantiveorangeerrors.html
A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.
I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I noticed in these most recent frames that some of contrast of the shadows and other things seems to be slightly lessened compared to the unrestored frames, but maybe that's how it was supposed to look with the smoke? Will the final correction bring out more contrast?
The contrast, colour correction, etc. in these recent clips and screencaps are all temporary.
Here is another 30 second cleaned clip from Reel 1,
there are many tricky, blurry, and fast motion scenes here:

NOTE : The colors and contrast will be adjusted later. This one was saturated a little higher than normal. Also the brightness was higher, causing some of the details in the highlights to not appear.
A full clip with different effects will also be posted.
We are only emphasizing the cleanup here, and not the other details.

An update of the images of the Orange Marks can be found here:

Great cleanup! It looks so different from the digital mess, the bluray release of Star Wars (and not just the colors). Makes me feel all warm inside... ;-)
Thanks for the comments. Here is the full video without the comparison.

NOTE : This has a different correction on it, with less saturation, and a more natural contrast.
Another deleted scene test cleanup here:

Groovy!
For those that missed it, the 8mm Grindhouse version has a 2 and half minute preview of the LPP

Here is more cleanup of some of the iconic scenes from the first reel, continuing from the flyover:
Lots of tricky blurred scenes, and motion shots in there.

NOTE : As always, there is a blue tint to the scenes that was in the original scans, color correction will be applied on a shot by shot basis later on.

Apparently some vandals drew big red circles on the frames.
