I’m trying to find out which SDTV and HDTV versions of Star Wars are floating around the net, and to understand something more about them…

Some facts (and factoids) I found so far:

  • OUT should be not available on digital form, but eventually only recorded on VHS, Betamax or Video 2000
  • 1997 SE are available only on SDTV - PAL 720x576 25fps, don’t know if any NTSC versions are around; I recorded myself the RaiTre version - with a DVD recorder connected via a SCART RGB cable to a DTV decoder; quality is quite low, some garbage frames, cropped to 2:1, but if there is some interest I could think to upload it - screenshots of Reivax, Flunx, TB, GKar here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Max-Rebos-97-SE-superset-preservation/post/323245/#TopicPost323245
  • The Phantom Menace is available for sure in SD on the so-called “TB” version; according to this page - http://www.starwars-union.de/nachrichten/1113/StarWars_im_digitalen_Format - it was broadcasted in 2001 by German TV Premiere, in 16:9 and German 5.1 DD audio; it was also noted by a member of this forum that it was broadcasted by Austrian ORF1, first in SD, then in HD - no evidence of that until now
  • It seems that no Attack Of The Clones and Revenge Of The Sith theatrical versions were never broadcasted - but I’ll be more than happy to discover the opposite!
  • HDTV broadcasting valid resolutions are:
    1280x720 1280x1080 1440x1080 1440x1088 1920x1080 1920x1088
so any resolution different from those ones are necessarily re-encoded; until now, available versions use only the last two ones - even if there seems that at least one 1280x1080 version was broadcasted
  • HDTV valid video codecs are MPEG-2 and h264 (a.k.a. AVC); any other codec - like VC-1, WMV, DivX etc. are necessarily re-encoded
  • HDTV valid audio codecs are AC3, MP2, AAC; any other codec - like DTS etc. are necessarily re-encoded
  • HDTV max average video bitrate is around 19mbps; the 30+GB floating some times ago may be recorded from cable TV, or re-encoded; actually, the biggest file size, including audio track(s), is around 20GB, while some lower bitrate versions are around 10GB
  • Usually HDTV broadcast have some kind of logo but, as far as I know, it seems there is no trace in any known available versions, so it means that for some particular reason these had no logo at all, or the logo was removed, and so they should be necessarily re-encoded
  • The only “untouched” HDTV file - recorded bit-perfect from a SAT or DTV PC card - has a .ts file extension (both for MPEG2 and h264); but .mkv or .mp4 could be found - it’s possible to mux untouched video and audio streams in these container, and add also further audio and/or sub tracks
  • HDTV versions use the same masters of the 2004 DVD SE; so, they are NOT the same versions found on BD - EXCEPT for the new WOWOW recordings
  • Video quality could range from fair to good, but not as good as the BD - due to lower HDTV bitrate; but the BD is DVNR’d so some shots/scenes could be better on HDTV than BD
  • Usually BD has a bigger frame size, while sometime the opposite is true:
    http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/99096
    http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/90179
  • HDTV may have different cropping and color grading:
    http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/123357
  • Some versions may have glitches, some not (note the trousers):
    http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/123360
    http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/123361
    http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/123362
  • Here you are a screenshot gallery of German Premiere HDTV original trilogy - even if the site claims pictures are from Cinemax, they are NOT, as you can see the German crawl:

Nice summary, thanks for writing it all down.

Darth Id on ‘Why “Ben”?’:

And while we’re at it, we need to figure out why they kept calling Mark Hamill’s character “Luke Skywalker,” since it’s my subjective opinion that his name is actually Schnarzle Shnuzzle.  It just doesn’t make sense!

Damn you George Lucas for never explaining why they all keep calling Schnarzle “Luke”!

Damn You!!!

Great Work!  Thanks for this list.

Does anyone know where to find those French HDF versions?  They could be very helpful for version 2 of my HDTV project.  PM me if you can help.  Thanks.

Thanks for the help stretch009!  It seems that ROTJ is still totally missing and ANH is missing part 12.  Any help would be much appreciated.

None of these informations is probably going to be useful, but you never know:

-I "think" (I was just a kid back then :D) in 97-98 Mediaset also broadcasted the OT (probably the 1997 SE) either on Canale5 or Italia1;

-Also, some year after ROTS was released, they also broadcasted all six movies;

I'm aware the OT was broadcasted, in Italy as like in all other countries, but it was before DVB... so, if we are lucky, the best we could find out is S-VHS copies, and I think they will surely not be better than GOUT; but you are right, I titled the thread "SDTV & HDTV..." maybe I must change it to "Digital SDTV & HDTV..."!

By the way... benvenuto! (^^,)

I see: so the first Mediaset broadcasting I mentioned, either was still "Analog" SDTV or had to be recorded on VHS at that time, right?

In ogni caso, piacere :)

Yes, DVB transmissions started around 2004 IIRC, and DVD recorders were available around that year...

The only way to have an high quality OT version - but I strongly doubt it was transmitted - is a D2MAC european satellite broadcast, and a S-VHS (or other high resolution tape recorder) or a MUSE japanese satellite broadcast (using an high def master) and a W-VHS recorder... well, dream is still free - for the moment!

Not sure if this info is of any use but here in Slovakia  a private TV "Markiza" showed the 1997 SEs (and theatrical cuts of episodes 1 & 2) about 2 million times since 2002, but dubbed (of course) and in 4:3 (episode 2 was a bizarre mix of cropped 4:3 and 16:9 footage "stretched" to 4:3). The latest broadcast I've seen however was the DVD version (I think cropped to 16:9)

Thanks! Not useful for the *database*, but always interesting to know these info!

I found somewhere that the BD image is about 8% bigger (or the HDTV 8% cropped?) than the HDTV; someone could confim this? And what's about the other episodes?

Also, there was at least a D-VHS recording of a trilogy broadcast, made in 2003, so it was *not* the 2004 DVD version... maybe? (Thanks to Jetrell Fo for the info)

For TPM the HDTV has the same 8% (or I've heard 10%) cropping in many (but not all) shots that the DVD has. The other episodes don't have that problem.

Thanks for the info! You are right:

(third images seems to have both images from BD)

But... following this comparison:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/90179
it seems there is at least one shot which has more image on HDTV...

Someone could confirm that the Premiere German HDTV has tiny 8 pixel borders on both sides?

I think I did recently read that there are a very few shots with more image on the DVD/HDTV version. Certainly this shot that was SE'ed in 2011 is less cropped:

OK, I searched all the web, from the surface to the deep, and still not found an MPEG2 version of EP1... or, better, there was at least a small version, around 9GB, but I guess there should be another - like the Cinemax ones - around 16/17GB... if someone is aware of its existence, please let me know.

Plus, it will be great to have a confirmation that there is an HDTV of the EP1 theatrical version - as it should have been broadcasted, following few scarces sources - while it seems there were no 1997 SE HDTV broadcast record - even if there are rumors that EP4 and EP5 were transmitted in UK, while EP6 was the 2004 version.

By the way... benvenuto! (^^,)

I know I've mentioned this here before somewhere but there is a user over at AVSFourms who claims to have recorded the Trilogy using his DVHS system.  He responded to me only once and I believe he misunderstood me when I was asking if he'd make me copies.  Apparently there were HBO and Cinemax broadcasts.

Yes, I remember it - I even retrieved the discussion on AVS... and noted is not online since few months IIRC... maybe you could try to contact some other AVS members from that very thread.

It will be great if such recordings will surface... it will be hard, frankly, but not impossible, because "I've… seen things you people wouldn't believe…" - as the MPEG2 versions of EP2 and EP3, that frankly I was not aware they exist until I made thorough searches!

At the end, I still got my Rai Tre SE trilogy, and maybe it's the only recording still available nowadays - if only I could find a way to go into their archive and grab those pro tapes somehow... (^^,)

I sent a pm to another member to see if there was something floating around that I could get ahold of.

Patience is a virtue.

Finger crossed here... even if it's not the original trilogy, it would be a great discovery in the fan restoration world nevertheless!
