Neither Warbler's Place nor Psycho_Dayv's forum went anywhere.  I've seen separate boards for off-topic sections in action, and it doesn't work.  I don't know if it's laziness or what, but they never seem to take off - or have the same steam - as the original board.

Well, I wasn't talking about another Warbler's Place(boy, was that stupid idea and a stupid name for a forum).   I was talking about a forum that would be the official Off Topic section for ot.com.   We would still be affiliated.  One of the reasons mine and davy's forum didn't work was we were completely separate forums.   People felt that they had to choose between here and those places(even though they really didn't have to, they could have been members of both), and that was no contest.   We could never generate enough membership and that wouldn't be a problem with this idea.  All the forum members here would be members of the separate place.   There would be no competition,  ot.com would be the place to talk about Star Wars and fan edits and preservations and the new separate forum would be its off topic section.

This seems absolutely pointless though. Why not just keep it the way it is but have very light moderation? Since some of us, myself included, only want obvious trolls banned, not many members who contribute elsewhere would find themselves banned here for stepping over the line. I just don't see the need to create a new forum.

I just proposed that because it seems like Jay and the mods don't like this section all that much and might be happier with someone else in charge of it.  But I guess its a stupid idea.

Everyone who thinks this bar needs more cops hanging around or a list of rules on the wall should just find a new bar. This is one of the few places left when we can smoke inside, practice freedom of speech and get in regardless of age.
I say we keep it that way.

"This place can be a little rough" and I like that just fine.
If anybody feels unsafe then maybe they should frequent a more hospitable establishment.

^Not everyone is mature enough to have that response, and I for one would love having less trolls to deal with.

Even a seedy bar has a bouncer though.

Off topic or not, you're running out of bridges to burn.

I don't even want to look in this forum anymore.

In keeping with the "seedy bar" analogy, this post gives me the feeling of a guy finding out his grandmother has actually been watching him debauching himself in the strip club, and feeling deep, deep shame.  I thought "unmoderated" meant no moderators!  Don't look at me!  Silverwook!  I'm sorry!!!!

I vote yes to light moderation.  By "light", all I mean is banning those who post almost exclusively to antagonize others.  Such individuals rarely stay for long, but they do spoil things in a way that putting them on "ignore" only partially remedies.

Of course I'd love less trolls as well, but it really is easy to ignore a conversation you don't want to have. And I don't mean putting the user on ignore, but just disregarding their posts.

but if someone is obviously a troll and nothing else, why can't we just get rid of him?

I dunno, I guess it's easier for some than others.

I've found that I generally don't agree with Chewtobacca at all, except for the times he has anything to say.

Basically, he should post more.

"This place can be a little rough."

Yes it can . . . and it seems to me that if folks are intent on carrying through with making this place into a bar where ruffians and scumrots can enter freely, then what it really needs is a wandering space samurai with a lightsaber who can, in extreme cases, dismember the worst of the drunken louts when their attacks become too aggressive.

not everyone likes smoke blown in their face.

speech on a forum is as free as the admins and mods want it to be.

I wonder how free you'd want speech on here  if some troll went after something you hold sacred.

If anybody feels unsafe then maybe they should frequent a more hospitable establishment.

or perhaps you could go down to the bar down the street where the motorcycle gangs hang out.

Hey Warb, Frink (I Think) was the name of my second children's book.  You have to pay royalties to use it.

No *sigh*ing allowed.

Seriously, why would you sigh at that?  It's just a silly little joke.  Try to relax while you are here, at least once in a while.

We don't need cops, but the bartender (perhaps that would be Frink) ought to have the right to throw real trouble-causers out of the bar. Right now the trolls can come and do as they please, and they're not really ignorable unless every person who posts here decides to ignore them.
