Ohhhhh....

Correction to what I said earlier: Apparently there were no tweaks made for this release. Content-wise it's 100% identical to the blu-rays, unless someone notices otherwise.

Devin's sources thought they were looking at the version for this digital release. What they were actually looking at was the 4k version we've been talking about since July in that other thread. That version does contain tweaks, and Han shoots first.

Han didn't shoot first. Han let off the only shot. Just thought I'd say.

Devin Faraci sed:

But in the Lucasfilm vaults there is a 4k remaster of the original trilogy that has been tweaked and changed from the latest release, and that 4k version has Han shooting first.

I have a baaaad feeling about this...

Since Han shoots first, I guess that means Greedo still shoots.  Was the original shot used or is this not the last we've seen of the rubber neck Solo?

Personally, I find it more likely that his sources didn't see anything. High level access to something that is tightly under wraps that they managed to view in its entirety without knowing what they were watching?

And his update is just him rationalizing that it must have been the 4K if it wasn't Tomorrow's. He's not even claiming that the source seeked out further info. Hell, maybe they watched KK650's hybrid cut with altered color timing.

Even if it's another SE, I don't see that as cause for worry. IIRC, evidence came up at some point in the 70-page 4K thread for this transfer having been done back in 2009, when George was still in charge. Maybe he wasn't done tweaking it by 2011 so they used the '04 master. Maybe it's done now but Disney doesn't want to unveil a new 4k transfer in the form of a compressed, 1080p download, so they're using the blu-ray version once again.

Even if a 4k SE has been finalized, maybe Disney is simply saving it for later. Perhaps they've realized it won't sell without a restored OOT to go along with it, and so they're biding their time.

Yes, the duping will be fixed.

My sources, which are very highly placed, indicate that Lando dies in the new digital version of ROTJ.

I don't take Faraci too seriously, just last year he said that Fox owned Star Wars and that the OOT would never be released as long as Lucas was alive... According to his sources. I really don't view Faraci as any more or less reliable as ComicBook.com/BleedingCool.com - they're all based on the same unidentified and vague sources.

The Person in Question

For what it's worth I pretty much knew it was just the 2011 updated 2004 DVD version. Disney announced and released it very quickly so that fans wouldn't have time to do their research and find out that a 4k restoration has been taking place - originally intended to be used as the basis of the 3D theatrical versions no doubt - but could be used for a higher quality future release. It's just their way of double-dipping until they decide to release the 4k version

-The Podrace: Theatrical Edit

Probably my favorite additional content I've read about. Seems it could be helpful in restoring the theatrical. Perhaps it includes that missing shot wee only have a low quality source for.

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

Well, that's pretty lame. It isn't even new material, is it? Why not just get Williams to compose a new piece to replace the Fox fanfare?

It's the last bit of the ESB end credits. Perhaps this is a temp until Episode 7 is out?

In any case, I'm not too surprised Disney pulled this. When they briefly held the home video rights to Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal in the mid 90's, they not only chopped out the Universal Studios logo, but the opening seconds of Trevor Jones' score as well! Glad they never got their mitts on it again.

Having an established piece of Williams Star Wars music play before the movie only serves to undermine the impact of the main theme, IMO.

That's pretty big news. Hard not to think they'd want to keep the fanfare of these consistent with TFA. Not sure how I feel though. Clearly they're trying to go with a piece that emulates the Fox fanfare. Unfortunatel, the shorter length of this and it's similarity to the main theme make me think that it probably wouldn't play out so well. I stand by my belief that a low key rendition of the force theme would do just fine as a fanfare. Nice try on their part though.

I still wouldn't be surprised if this is temp, though. Why use an existing piece for the new fanfare when you already have Williams on board recording new music? Perhaps it's not ready yet.

Also, I wonder about the lack of the Disney logo. Is that a legal thing or should we expect for that to continue? I think it would be pretty silly for them not to use the Disney logo. This isn't like Marvel, everyone knows that Disney owns Star Wars and, also unlike Marvel, they want to make sure people know.

It's nice to hear that Kathleen Kennedy is thrilled that fans now will be able to enjoy Star Wars on their digital devices wherever they go. Being able to watch the Special Editions and the Prequels when sunbathing at the beach is exactly what fans continually have asked for in the last ten years.

How about being fucking able to watch the actual films that made people fall in love with this and made it a phenomenon in the first place?

You have to suffer from what resembles the battered wife syndrome in order to still support this franchise.

I hope not, my plan was to watch that when sunbathing and having a beach party along with Alderaan shooting first.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Probably temporary. It's just a digital release so they're probably not too concerned about its permanent effect (they could even update the video streams later).

I know some fans really want to see the Fox fanfare in Episode VII. As much as we like to obsess over consistency, etc, this is obviously out of the question. Hopefully they'll come up with something that's not too distracting/awful.

I like you man, but this is almost as bad as the awful rape analogy some people use.  Not being able to watch a movie does not compare in the slightest.

Do we have to explain that the word rape means more than forced sex to you again Frink?

It means spoiled, ruined, contaminated "rape of the forest etc". The sexual aspect is just one use of a perfectly valid word.

The analogy he uses is sound albeit arch.

One clings on to a happy memory while repeatedly being insulted and disrespected by the provider of that happier time.

It's an analogy not an exact parallel.

If all these prohibitions on metaphor were enforceable nobody would be able to express an opinion on any subject. Even important ones like pizza toppings.

The new fanfare is bloody awful. What idiot thought that a truncated final few notes from a well known film would serve as an opening to a series?

It's like replacing the organ fanfare to Buffy the Vampire Slayer with half a random scream or a bit of a Sarah Michelle Gellar orgasm/ acrobatic sound from season 3.
