Great cheesy film, and a big seller on eBay - I think the one that's out now is a VHS transfer.

Interesting. According to IMDB, there is no laserdisc. Someone needs to tell them.

Well, LD stopped well before then. This LD existed prior to 2000. Besides, I was under the assumption that a lot of the info there was submitted by regular users anyways.

As I understand it, when IMDB changed to their new interface it was no longer possible for regular users to post updated or new information about laserdisc releases.

"ADigitalMan" If your doing "King Kong" one idea is to use a Sima video copymaster and switch the color to B/W even thow the picture is B/W there are still some color in the video like greens blues and reds. Sima video copymaster just filters out the junk that should not be there.

Actually, I'm not doing any LD transfers (as I don't own any myself). I'm just geeking out from the sidelines. What's amazing is how much of the tech talk about LD captures and transfers I'm following and more importantly, comprehending, since I've never actually done one myself.

A good friend of mine is a Laserphile and I try to scrounge up a good rare laserdisc for him every year around Christmas time. He's built a fairly impressive library of OOP (i.e. OOP on VHS and DVD) titles. I know he has Kong, a bunch of Rush LDs, a bunch of great Disney classics and, of course, the DE of the OT.

Does anyone know any good websites where I can get information on how to make a good anamorphic rip of a laserdisc? Over the christmas vacation, I want to make a LD rip of Superman: The Movie, but I only want to have to go through the process once (I have a LD player and a TV tuner card, the rest I'll do in software).

There are few anamorphic LD's, and Superman isn't one of them. You have to capture it at normal resolution, and then make your own anamorphic transfer.

@chaoz95

I had this exact question myself when I anamophicised my star wars LD.

superman is a 2.35:1 aspect film if I remember correctly so this is what you do.

crop the black bars so you only have the film image.

if its NTSC it will be

720x 270ish

if it's PAL it will be

720x 325ish

resize it to

NTSC
720x360

PAL
720x432

then add black bars, either in avisynth or by virtualdub up to the full resolution

so NTSC
720x480

PAL
720x576

that will give you an anamorphic sized capture.

then when you convert it in something like TMPGenc to give you your M2v file for authoring, make sure it is flagged as a 16:9 file.

Why would anyone want to transfer the laserdisc version of Superman? The remastered DVD is BEAUTIFUL and only has a couple of inserted scenes approved by Donner. To get a "true" theatrical release, wouldn't it be easier (not to mention look a lot better) to rip the vob files and just edit the three inserted scenes out?

Actually, yes.

There were scenes added to the superman dvds? which ones as im not familar with this.

Also, two quick questions to all those that are doing dvd editing/creation

1) is it possible to remove 1 chapter from a dvd, such as an included music video (i know what vob its in) and burn that to its own dvd, something simple that has no menu is fine. If so where can i find a simple tutorial that would help with this (i didnt see one that really applied on doom9)

2) and how easy is it to make your own dvd from a capture video. Obviously the more correcting/editing you do to the picture the more work is involved, but what about transfering home movies to dvd. what kind of software do i need (preferably free versions) and whats a good tutorial to look at (a specific 1 or 2 on doom9, would be more helpful than just a 'check doom9).

thanks for any help

ps sorry for the somewhat off topic post, but im a total beginner (just got a dvd burner, and havent actually gotten a capture card yet) and im interested in learning more about this

DVDShrink will do precisely that. I highly recommend it.

Sony Vegas isn't free, but there's a 30-day trial (let me know if you want to use it beyond that.) It can capture video, and it's really easy to edit the video, especially several segments (if you have a digital camcorder, it will control the entire capture process, and save each segment individually.) I use DVDLabPro for mastering menus (you can get a Beta with a 30-day trial as well.), and then Nero to burn my files to DVD.

As for capture cards, I love my WinTVGO model 90 for $40 bucks, but it didn't shine until I found third-party drivers.

I received Pinnacle Instant CD+DVD suite bundled with my burner. Expression has been a very useful tool for me. I have a miniDV camcorder with firewire out, and Expression controls it nicely. Handles the transport features of the camcorder (rewind, ff, stop, pause, etc) and imports the tape into AVI nicely. From there, it will allow you basic authoring with menus. Sets chapter stops too. A handful of menu templates to choose from.

Not extremely flexible, but perfectly fine for home movie authoring.

Also, check out a freeware application called DVIO. This is a simple freeware video capture program. No features other than straight capture.

The added scenes to the Superman DVD were:

Chapter 4: Jor-El's Warning
Chapter 5: A Father's Farewell
Chapter 10: Unbelievable Lois
Chapter 15: The Daily Planet
Chapter 24: Fatherly Advice
Chapter 25: Story of the Century
Chapter 34: The Gauntlet
Chapter 38: Disasters Galore

The movie restoration was AMAZING on this movie! I suggest reading about the restoration work here:
www.capedwonder.com Plus there's a John Williams Music Only track! How great is that?!?

There's a very extensive article on it there. (They didn't restore any of the other movies, just the first.)

Now if they'd only restore Superman II: The Richard Donner cut. He's publicly stated his desire to do this. And since the new movie is supposed to pick up where II left off (perhaps even suggesting that III and IV don't even exist), it would be even more interesting to see Donner's vision for Superman II. Brando restoring Superman's powers ... that is the greatest scene ever put to paper but left unfilmed.

But I'm pulling us off-topic. Sorry.

Thanks for the info. Gonna take a look at that capture card as I kinda need one before i can really do much, but dont want to spend a fortune while at the same time want a good/decent card.

Those softwares sound pretty good, basically just looking for something real simple as i have absolutely no experience in this area. I probably wont even do much (if anything) as far as editing/restoration goes cause as i said im a total beginner as far as this stuff goes.

Thats pretty interesting stuff about Superman, havent read the whole article yet, but i didnt realize there was so much drama behind the scenes on that movie. Next time i watch the dvds it will be in a whole new light

The Superman DVD is great, however, along with the inserted scenes, there are some music changes as well. The most noticeable to me is at the beginning when the "S" zooms in. Trust me, as someone who has seen this film innumerable times, it is distracting. I love (and own) the DVD, but would love a transfer of the LD!
