Netflix has the old masters and they are really, really interlaced.  It looks fine on a TV but for some reason on my laptop they look atrocious.  As for DS9, it looks fine, but I can't wait for the remasters.

I think Amazon has the exclusive streaming rights to the TNG remasters.

Bkev is 100% correct. Amazon has TNG-R, TOS-R, and TOS original. Pretty nifty.

Thanks bkev and doubleofive. Sounds like I'll be getting Amazon Instant for a while, TNG remastered is well worth the 8 dollars

I imagine the original as broadcast TNG epsiodes are going to be harder to see outside of the old DVD sets pretty soon.

Anybody know of any good side-by-side comparisons of the original effects and the 'remastered' shots of TOS?
I've read that the new shots are very faithful to the originals, and I've seen comparisons where that seems to be the case. But I also have seen shots from the originals* that are styled very differently to anything I'm seeing in 'remastered'. Stars streaking by the Enterprise, colorful space backgrounds and things like that are never seen in the new version. The shots are usually static and boring.
Also, I've only watched through the first season... Maybe a bit of the second. Maybe the shots I'm talking about come later?

*at least I'm guessing that's what they're from.. I'm not familiar with Star Trek at all.

There are a bunch of side by side comparison videos on youtube.

The new transfers probably bring out details in the original FX that would have gone unnoticed on tv back in the day.

Does anyone else feel that the next Star Trek will be the last with the current cast.

I get a sense some of the actors may want to move on.

*crosses finger that this'll happen and lead to a reboot, a reboot that won't be Trek in name only this time around*

I definitely imagine this is the last one with the current cast, but I doubt we'll ever get movies that are like the TOS movies ever again. I think studios worry that mainstream audiences won't accept anything Trek related that isn't some sort of action comedy. The only way this could happen is if they make a new TV series that reaches the same success as TNG and then that is translated into actual sci-fi films

I don't know why the actors would give up an ongoing gig like that.

I like the new cast. They do a great job. They do need to develope further. Towards and/or away from the TOS characters.

I really liked the concept in the commentary of people being drawn together across altered timelines. Been hoping to see that develope as well.

It would be difficult to reduce into brief expo drops.

Brief talk about quantum entanglement and spooky action at a distance applying across altered timelines. A "default" "original" timeline and all the particles and waves in altered timelines remain "connected" and being drawn as nearly as possible into positions conforming to the "original".

Edge of Tomorrow pulled it off (with a little "makes you think" confusion.)

Like Luke and Ben in Ben's hovel, I enjoy it when a sci-fi movie does a good job of taking a little time to catch it's breath and enrich it's universe.

Would love to see Deep Space Nine and Voyager again, in true HD.

Not going to happen i know TNG was a big expense.

I don't think anyone at Paramount/CBS have said it isn't going to happen. It will probably boil down to how much it costs vs. how much they think they can recoup by selling both shows to tv again, and Blu Ray sales. The 50th anniversary will create demand for product besides a new feature film.

DS9 and Voyager used more CGI than TNG ever did, but I've heard elsewhere the files were saved, and could be re-rendered in HD.

I hope that's true. I myself recall hearing that Digital Domain (the studio that did CGI for DS9, Voyager, and Insurrection) trashed all its old rendering files when the studio went through bankruptcy.

I'd much rather prefer that you be right and I wrong on this.

Robert Myer Burnett has pretty much said that CBS isn't very willing to do it because not enough people bought TNG-R. They also didn't do anything to promote it recently and priced the sets way out of most people's price range.

The version I've heard is an employee kept backups of the files. Where the truth lies is anyone's guess.

Not having theatrical screenings of All Good Things was a dumb move. That was the one I really wanted to see on the big screen. The theater I went to see Best Of Both Worlds at was pretty packed with fans.

Different employes have partial backups of different things, but collecting and cataloging them all would be a large undertaking. Robert Bonchune supposedly has a fairly extensive personal backup. Some stuff would probably have to be remade.

Unfortunately, I don't think that DS9 is going to happen anytime soon. What I really would like to see is an HD version of TMP Director's cut.

Unless somebody saved those files when Foundation Imaging closed up shop, they would have to start from scratch. Blame Paramount for not ponying up for HD at the time.

Paramount has no desire to revisit the films. Only Star Trek II ever got a restoration and will likely remain the only film given the treatment.

The money it costs is not worth the limited number of sales that would be generated as most were happy with the already released sets.

Wish i was wrong about Trek getting a decent release on blu ray as far as the films go.

I think a new TV series is the way to go.  Totally completely reboot the thing and this time get better actors for the parts.  (and no romance between Uhura and what is supposed to be the logical and unemotional Spock).

A series of tv movies might be a way to test the waters for a return to a weekly series.

I'd be up for an animated TNG. The whole cast would probably be up for it, as most of them have done cartoon work for years. Patrick Stewart does Picard on Robot Chicken all the time. And  Dorn and Spiner won't have to get up early to sit in the makeup chair.

Now that they are as old as they were supposed to be in the future sequences of All Good Things, it's high time Q pops up with another surprise test. Nemesis was kind of a downer film to go out on anyway.

I agree 100%. And no alternate timeline garbage this time, either; make it its own completely separate universe.

From what I've read they planned to pay for the DS9 transfer from the profit they get from TNG, but unfortunately the profit was too small.
