Journey to The Force Awakens

Personally, I prefer Journey to Babel.

„Zum Neuen Turm Babel - zu meinem Vater - !“

Of course, that was widely considered the hardest puzzle in the game... no doubt because most players gave up in frustration at precisely that point.

(I'm reminded of the two-question survey carried out by the New Zork Times. Presumably that was the sort of thinking which led to the creation of Wishbringer.)

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

Well color me concerned.

I thought after the train wreck that the EU became that they'd take their time this go around to ensure history wouldn't repeat itself. Working individually with each writer, but nope.

The Marvel comics have been a troubling sign up to now and it's looking like that trend will continue. =\

I do think this part is important

from novels for adults and teens to storybooks and stickerbooks for younger kids

So we're probably not looking at the simultaneous release of 20 novels here. Chances are, they'll fill in some key stuff from the missing 30 years, but won't tell everything.

Even if they aren't all novels, I agree it does still sound like a lot of material to punch out quickly in the months prior to TFA. They're likely to announce even more material too, including more comics. 30 years worth of material is a lot to catch up on after all, but still, all we can hope for is they make sure every single story is well-thought out so that nothing contradicts each other and that they are all good stories to boot.

Agreed.  In the grand scheme, this isn't going to matter much if it's about as many possible tie-ins as they can get.  I don't think I need to remind you all how many kids' books came out related to TPM that are technically canon, but have long been forgotten.

Certainly the majority will be stuff that we won't even notice exists (all the kids things), but the novels and comics will be of some interest, as this is newly uncharted territory.

We can probably expect at least a few adult novels and comics that will fill in the gaps, and likely even more in the future. The article said they're working with the film's screenwriters, so I'm sure these stories will be carefully crafted by the new story group so as to not make any messes. Making up the history of post-ROTJ is especially important now, much more so than what happens in between the OT movies (where the new comics have been taking place).

I probably won't delve into any of this material until after I see the film and figure out what stuff is worth investing in. But it's cool to know that there'll be a new batch of content for the empty spaces of the new canon.

AKA the new EU gets interesting:

20 new books and comics out this fall to bridge the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

Sounds like fun!

 Summary posted for Aftermath:

The second Death Star is destroyed. The Emperor and his powerful enforcer, Darth Vader, are rumored to be dead. The Galactic Empire is in chaos.

Across the galaxy, some systems celebrate, while in others Imperial factions tighten their grip. Optimism and fear reign side by side.

And while the Rebel Alliance engages the fractured forces of the Empire, a lone Rebel scout uncovers a secret Imperial meeting…

I must have mentally tuned out the TPM merchandising onslaught at some point, because I have no memory of seeing the kid's books. Did they sugarcoat things like Qui Gon's death or Maul doing the split? ;)

^Nope!  They were mostly odd, peripheral stories - like expansions on Anakin's history with podracing or a journal chronicling the movie from the POV of Padme.  Really silly, inoffensive stuff.

The exception being Jedi Apprentice, which told stories of Obi-Wan training under Qui-Gon.  I just gave those off to goodwill but I recall them holding up into adulthood.  Anything that makes Liam Neeson's character interesting is good by me to this day.

It's probably nothing, but is anyone else curious about the word choice there?

Well where are the bodies? Who can prove they didn't escape the explosion? Many would hope they did - and so the rumors spread. Some would even take advantage of the situation and become shadowy impostors.

Right. I don't think they're setting up the return of either of those characters in the form of a blurb about a book.

Rather, I think they'll deal with the point that their deaths really aren't confirmed. Within the empire, there will probably be those keeping the faith and others determined to take control.

Damn, I was hoping for a Watto story at least. Blowing all his money on podracing, and doing spice off a slave girl's tummy probably isn't too wholesome a subject though. ;)

That's a very good way of putting it. Yeah I figured I had to be over thinking the wording, like I sometimes do :)

As much as people wish for a rebooted EU this is not that.  Star Wars is all one Canon now.

It will be a huge task to manage it all so it works all together.  All Star Wars and its forms of media.

The legends stuff is in the past and they are not going to write or publish any more of those set after Return of the Jedi.

Does anyone really miss not being able to read Sword of the Jedi.

Where the Skywalker heirs minus Anakin and Jacen Solo would have been the new heroes with Jaina probably being the new Luke.

So the ink from the books vanished? Refusig to read a good story because it is no longer canon is like feeling obliged to read every crappy novel, just because it is canon.

I don't mind the new books being on the same level as the movies, as long as the movies work without the books. Small references to the novels are fine, in the fashion of Han's reference to the bounty hunter on Ord Mantell, just this time they would actually know what they were talking about.

I miss not being able to read the stories that would have been had the PT never been made -- stories pertaining to the real Jedi, the real Sith, the real future of the Skywalker-Solo kids, etc.

That's all water under the bridge now, though.

As a dude who read EVERY Clone Wars novel between Ep 2 and Ep 3, I'll be skipping these.

I want the film to feel fresh, exciting and magic. I don't need anything to get me ready.

I like the way you think, S'Wook.

(Although I could think of a few more ways to punch up the sleaze in your titillating and charming scenario.)
