The 72-year-old crash landed on Penmar Golf Course ... and was later attended to by two physicians who were on the scene.

And that's why you always look for a golf course when you have to crash land your plane.

Harrison has sense in this at least.

So, for that matter, did Howard Hughes, who ended up in basically the same situation during a test flight in 1946. He tried to land his expiring plane on the LA Country Club golf course, but didn't quite make it and crashed into a house instead.

Luckily for Harrison, he actually managed to pull the trick off.

There's a hilarious alternate reading of the "Fly, yes; land, no!" line on the little-known Story of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade tie-in audio CD. (Skip to the end to hear it.)

Essentially that CD features a narrator (John Rhys-Davies!) recounting the film's story as if he's reading a book, interspersed with clips from the film.

Comparing the audio of that line as used in the film with this alternate take makes me think of Crystal Skull--and the two versions of Indy's "Part-time!" quip.

Only here, Lucas and Spielberg clearly used the better reading in the film, whereas with KOTCS Harrison's line delivery in the trailer was much better than in the actual movie.

Is it normal for pilots to be in a few crashes? Serious question as Harrison is an experienced pilot so I'm wondering if his constant flying just increases the odds of a crash like that happening.

I guess flying WW II era planes increases those chances.

It doesn't always happen, but never tell him the odds ;)

When is the real trailer going to be released?

With the original actors.

Hoping Mark Hamill really is not in it for only 2 minutes or whatever.  Or i will only see it once.

Harrison Ford is very well known in the aviation community for his enthusiasm and is generally regarded as a pretty good pilot by those who have flown with him from what I've heard.

He flies a lot of vintage aircraft. While they are held to the same rigorous maintenance standards as modern aircraft (and I can't believe someone with his kind of money would skimp by seeking out the lowest bidder for maintenance either...) the fact is that the older a machine is the more likely it is for something to fail.

Also, he is very well known for being an avid bush pilot, which is kind of the aviation equivilent of being into off-road motor sports. It is inherently more dangerous as you are often landing and taking off in very small, confined areas surrounded by trees or rugged terrain such as moutains. And rather than a nice long paved runway, you're often using fields, riverbeds, streams, snowfields, glaciers, and other unpredictable surfaces.

While most pilots will go their entire lives or careers and never have any kind of accident, it is almost guaranteed to happen to you at some point if you spend enough time flying vintage aircraft or bush piloting. The fact that he does both regularly means its no surprise that he's had a few bumps along the way.

We probably won't know the exact details of what actually happened for some time as the NTSB tends to take their time with generating the final accident report, but if it was some kind of mechanical failure like the engine quitting, then the fact he made it to a safe place without harming anyone or anything on the ground indicates he's at the very least a competent pilot.

The article above did state that it was a problem with the engine.

Only two minutes? How long do you expect this trailer to be!? ;)

The FAA will be controlling the investigation. They were probably there before he was in his hospital room. They tend to take over quickly and completely.

[/former helicopter pilot mode]. No, not kidding.

We will probably get something at Celebration next month.

And as I've said before, Mark didn't get back into shape just for a glorified cameo.

Isn't the NTSB the agency that actually does the investigating? Of course the FAA will be there too and they work hand in hand, but I know the NTSB generates the final report. And it's to the NTSB (not the FAA) that any aircraft accident or incident must be reported per FAR part 830.

Yes, but as an aviation professional with over a decade of experience, I can say without hesitation that news agencies RARELY get the details right in aviation reports. In fact, they are quite often laughably mis-informed and inaccurate.

And even if it is correct that there was an engine issue, we still don't know the true details and won't know them until the investigation is concluded and the NTSB report issued.

I agree and do believe you're right, but it doesn't completely rule out that slight possibility.

No matter how long he's needed for the story, I see Hamill as a team player who's willing to do what is needed - losing a lot of weight and growing his self-disdained beard - so that he can be the best he can be for his iconic role. Sure they can use digital manipulation, but that's the sort of thing they don't want to do if it can be avoided at all.

I for one am looking forward to seeing enough of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker who is in good shape and kicking ass. I'm sure I'm not the only one either, so again I believe you're right :)

It would be really disappointing if Luke had less than 5 minutes of screen time.  Seems like a lot of fans are looking forward to his return.  I guess we all assumed he would take a Kenobi type of role.

It would feel like a rip off, especially after all this secrecy.

It's what I'm hoping for and expecting.

Hamill himself has stated that they are just there to pass the baton on to the youngsters. Also all the official promotional material has been about the new sh*t, even if the un-official online buzz has been about the OT crew's return.

So I wouldn't feel mislead if they were just beefed up cameos.

The NTSB final report will come from the FAA investigation. I haven't flown in over 15 years, before 9-11.  I suspect there will also be Homeland Security fingerprints on the investigation.

(Sorry, Humdingers, I jacked-up the quote structure using my iPad so I deleted it).

Back on topic; I suppose I'm expecting their roles (original cast) to be peripheral, but not cameos. At least I hope not. I'm most interested in seeing Luke. Solo will be interesting to catch up with too, but I'm expecting a sort of Indiana Jones type of grizzled veteran role. Wouldn't be at all surprised if they're only in this first film.

Disney has been exploiting OT nostalgia in a big way, especially with Rebels. It would be a major miscalculation to not give us one last adventure with some old friends. That the old gang is coming back is one reason this has gotten so much mainstream media coverage. There wasn't nearly as much buzz for Episode III.

I'm hoping one of the new characters has to go find Mark in a frozen-time place and convince him to come back to the present, where they team up to defeat the bad guy, only to have Mark crushed under a bridge.

Actually, forget the hoping part.  I'm officially saying that's the new hot rumor.

If there's anybody OT who wasn't the big 3 but is deserving of some kind of cameo, it'd be Lando. I'm sure that's why they haven't mentioned him, so we wouldn't feel ripped off if he's only in it for one scene - so now we'll be happy if he's in it at all.

I still think it could've been neat to have had Wedge as a general. Not a big role, but similar to General Rieekan in ESB. If only Lawson were up for it... unless he expressed disinterest only to throw off the media? *fingers crossed*

My only other choice for a cameo would then have to be Malakili ;)

Yeah, I hope it's a smokescreen. It's not like Lawson refuses to sign photos of Wedge or anything.

Ric Olie will fly out of a wormhole at a crucial moment to save the day of course. ;)

You know how the plans to destroy the Death Star are given by R2 to the Rebel command at the end of IV? I'm predicting the same thing for VII, except Ric Olie will be the one providing the info, a la "The entire station is like one big city, and it can be destroyed by that little port there..."
