The new Star Wars comics - a general discussion thread — Page 9

After months of intense rage, I've decided to relax my boycott on Marvel; it just takes too much effort for me to avoid Star Wars comics, so I'm not going to frustrate myself over it anymore.

Of course, that doesn't mean I'm going to bother with the main series or anything related to Vader (and I'm certainly not touching any of the superhero stuff at all anymore -- that ship has sailed right off the edge of a flat Earth), but I will give the rest of their SW output a look.

I think the new Vader comics will have a nice bridge between OT and maybe some newer things added to the mix. I saw a promo art earlier and its rumored Vader might end up fighting Ahsoka Tano, and overall at least my impression from the first issue is they're trying to stay faithful to the OT. The settings and stuff are all familiar, and the writers are at least attempting to show the rift between The Emperor and Palpatine that was hinted at int he movies. I'm eager to see what happens.

Meh. I'm sick to death of how the EU's portrayed Vader for years now, and I doubt Marvel's going to be the one to bring him back to basics. Count me officially done with the "canon" version of the character.

Imo vader is written quite well in the Vader series, he doesnt say much and does what it takes to get what he wants with no hesitation. In one scene Jabba is trying to negotiate with vader so vader just starts choking him and deflects a bunch of lasers into the crowd, Vader is quick to to violence and won't hesitate to do what he feels like just like in the movies.

I must be the only person tired of the just after star wars, or between star wars and empire strikes back stories.  I want stuff after Return of the Jedi.

If they were allowed to do their own material and ignore Del Rey.

So the new comics are Canon and all the Dark Horse and Marvel stuff from the old days is not?

It's not gonna happen 'til after Episode VII comes out.

Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir is the only Dark Horse material that is still canon, because it was based on unproduced scripts for The Clone Wars season 6.

Pity. I always had a soft spot for Kyle Katarn.

Man I have avoided comics my whole life and now all of the sudden I'm pursuing every issue of these series'... for how long they take to read/look at, they are kind of a rip off BUT it's star wars and it's canon so I have to buy it :P

If they're going the decompressed* route, then it would be better to skip buying individual issues and just wait for the inevitable trade.

Oh, and BTW, there're better comics out there to read for a newcomer. =P

*"Decompressed" is just modern comics shorthand for "padded".

Vader #2 came out yesterday. Random mission, not sure how it ties into the plot of this limited run series, but it's entertaining at least.

Three things I like about the Vader comic:

1. We see Tagge's starfleet that Motti mentions in Star Wars (1977).

2. We see Vader's starfighter squadron, something I've always been dissappointed that we didn't see in ESB, ROTJ, or the legends EU.

3. Tagge outranks Vader, which fits how Vader is presented in Star Wars (1977).

Vader isn't limited run, it's ongoing. Princess Leia is the only one that's limited run.

And I agree about all three of your points, darlkordoftech. All good stuff. And I really love Vader's underhanded shady dealings in both #1 and #2, especially how he treats his "watcher."

Darth Vader #2 was excellent. Kieron Gillen would have fit right in with the Dark Horse writers. Excellent pace throughout the book and the back and forth between Vader and Tagge was great. Loving all of the Imperial intrigue. I hope the main Marvel Star Wars title learns a thing or two from this run.

As Smithers said, it was a disappointment to see Destroyer droids but not unexpected. As much as we might protest, the prequels are still a part of the franchise and their touch will continue to be felt from now on. Though their inclusion here wasn't too bad. At least they weren't regular battle droids. *shudder*

Hopefully the new movies won't have any prequelisms, its a possibility considering them being in rebels and the comics.

Vader just being a henchman and not the whole Saga's focus is a bit more in tune with the original film. Unfortunately it also pretends those other movies all five of them never happened.

Vader becoming popular and turning out to be Luke father in Empire strikes back shifted the whole orbit of the original series.

The whole wouldn't it be interesting if Luke was not the central character what if it was Vader's story. I used to think it was a prequel conception now i am not so sure it did not begin with Empire.

Is the emperor shown or not shown in the comics?

The only way for it to mirror the original movie is for him to be hidden and remote.  Not the Big bad Sith Lord Sidious.  Calling everyone over hologram.

Princess Leia #1

I'm feeling a lot more confident about Star Wars being entrusted in Marvel's hands. This first issue was pretty good. Finally they get to a story set literally just after the credits role on the first film. The premise is intriguing, if a little shaky.

The characterizations are all spot on. It's great to see more of Dodonna, he was always a severely neglected character that never really got his due outside of the newspaper strip. However, I do find Ackbar's appearance troublesome if only because I still consider the newspaper strip a part of my personal canon and he just does not belong on Yavin at all. Though I thought they handled him well here.

The art is pretty great. The backgrounds and pre-existing vehicles are stellar. Though likenesses and the one new vehicle leave a bit to be desired. The vehicle especially just doesn't fit the aesthetic at all. And lastly, it seemed pretty bizarre that there were statues of the royalty of Alderaan setup in the temple. That doesn't really add up.

Getting back to the premise, the idea that the Empire is now rounding up all surviving Alderaanians is a bit of a stretch. I can understand that there'd be concerns over fomenting thoughts of revenge but to act so swiftly to start rounding them up a day after the destruction of the planet is...questionable.

But overall, I quite enjoyed the first issue. I look forward to seeing where this is going.

I did, however, like the concern about the fate of Alderaaninan culture and about Leia's composure, even if I'm quite on the fence about the new character who epitomizes these things as well as the constant "Ice Princess"ing.

It is ridiculous that Marvel is reprinting AL Williamson's Empire Strikes Back comic under the remastered label with redone colors.

Even the cover is awful, it has the 2004 Emperor. Not the original 1980 Emperor.  The  cover art is very badly done in general and is certainly not the original done by AL.
