Jonno was kind enough to email me my blu ray set, box, disc, and everything else exactly as I had finished it. I have put it in several places to ensure I won't lose it again.

I had a copy on my computer, so if you do happen to lose it again, I never delete stuff like that. I'll have it.

If I remember correctly, you had some instructions for making the box, but lost those before you released it. I was wondering what you used to make it. Thanks.

The problem with my instructions is the fact that I never made the box. But here is my template, as well as instructions on how to make it.

And for archival purposes

                                                                 READ ME

READ THIS BEFORE YOU EVEN START

Well, if you have made it this far, I must start by saying thank you!!!. Now let us cut to the chase.
You absolutely need to print out the template, unless you are a genius.

For the template, I recommend a nice strong card stock paper. It will make the box stronger.

For the actual part of the box with the pretty stars and vader, use what you want, but a nice shiny paper would be best. Some have talked about printing on a foil for nice effect

The area that says DO NOT CUT, keep those words in mind. No part of that should be cut.

Cut the area that says "cut across this dotted line" on the Mid Flaps, but do NOT get near the middle part of the box.

Now fold the TOP were it says Bottom Flap, Mid Flap, and Top flap. Make sure it is a perfect fold, do not go past where
it says do not cut.

Do the same for the BOTTOM

NOW, fold the lines from the top Mid Flap, to the bottom Mid Flap even going across the Do Not Cut part.

Put a dab of glue on top of the BOTTOM FLAP
Press the MID FLAP on top of the Bottom Flap.
Put a dab of glue on top of the MID FLAP
Put a dab of glue on the exposed part of the BOTTOM FLAP
Press the TOP FLAP on top of ALL FLAPS.

DO THE SAME FOR BOTH SIDES.

Does it look like a box yet?  DO THE SAME FOR THE COVER, THAT YOU DID WITH
THE TEMPLATE!!!!!

FOR A NICE SEAMLESS COVER

Print out the cover on a thick gloss, or card stock. Then print the template on the back.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Which ones? What have you done so far?

only the blu ray covers for now, but would like them all . My computer says I have and photo gallery error and the file is not supported. so they are downloaded just not opening.  My comp is older but still runs well. Is it possible to covert these files to a format I can get to open? Or tell me how to fix this problem....?

I think he meant specifically which files are you trying. There are probably hundreds in this thread, in a variety of formats. You need to give some tiny bit of information such as the file, the format, the program you're using to open it. Chances are you've got several programs on your computer that are capable of opening the files.

Here's the first of a set I'm working on.  I will use this on the case that holds Harmy's Despecialized and Respecialized Editions.

They're png files, which may be why you haven't gotten them to open. What software are you using? If you're on a PC (and probably mac), you can right click the file and try opening with a different program.

Will do.. My computer is a bit older ... so that may be part of the problem

I'm working on a box for my despecialized editions now. Unfortunately, I'm not great at box engineering. Here's my ill-fitting rough test version with my final blurays.

The box has a bit of work to go but the bluray sleeves are pretty much done. I designed them for Criterion size cases to maximize the artwork.

Some details:
- I used the copy and (bad) kerning from each film's opening crawl

- used the old school Fox logo

- recreated ALL the credits using the proper fonts.

- For each logo, i recreated each as a high-res vector version for easier scaling.

- Matched each film's release poster as closely as possible

- For the Empire cover, had to recreate the original one sheet WITHOUT Lando, Boba Fett or Cloud City

- For each case's pictures, I used images that spoke to them being the theatrical versions.

At any rate, enjoy. I may upload it once I figure out how to make the box fit the cases better.

thanks for looking,

Ron

Good job! I really like it. Looks like something Lucasfilm would've done back in the day.

I'd like copies of all my works. The hours I put into those, back when I had all kinds of time on my hands. People have popped up with some of them, but they've been changed up. I want the ones I initially released.

My first DVD set

My second DVD set

And my Blu Ray set, which is probably the most work I put into a set. I had the discs, the box, and I did a lot of work on getting the posters just right.

Question: What's thickness of the blu-ray cases are these designed for? I know that there are cases of maybe three different thicknesses in my collection, and while it's only a few millimeters, it still would affect the art if I got it on the wrong size.

I only ask because I recently printed off the ESF blu-ray covers, and I've cut them all out, and none of them fit into the blu-ray cases I have. They're both too long by a millimeter or two, and too wide by a similar margin. Any quick help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, finished my Despecialized edition box set. As I was designing it I kept thinking of more and more cool stuff to throw in. What started as a simple slipcase became a double slip case.In the end, I actually had to take stuff out.

Every card was hand cut. Each envelope was made as a one-off and handcut. Through trial and error on the slip cases, I must have eaten through two inkjet refills and printed the cases 8 or 9 times, not to mention the bluray sleeves.

Anyway, enjoy the pics.

thanks!

I don't suppose that's available for download anywhere, is it?

I'm happy to share. It'll take me a couple days to simplify the files. Right now they're all layered Photoshop files. I'll upload the whole package by the end of the weekend..

One big caveat: the slipcases and bluray art are designed to use Criterion cases. Unfortunately, it'd take quite a bit of work to adapt for the regular bluray case sizes, particularly on the slipcases which proved to be quite tricky to get right. You can buy blank Criterions on their site.

EDIT: LINKS REMOVED! Sorry, but the pirates and bandits have ruined it for everyone. Due to unscrupulous individuals bootlegging and SELLING my design, I have decided to remove the links. I thought long and hard about this and it wasn’t an easy decision. Apologies for those who weren’t able to get the links before I removed them. I may someday do another run at a premium price. IF I do, I’ll post in this thread.

DO NOT PM ME. I WON’T PROVIDE YOU WITH THE FILES. YOUR PMs WILL GO UNANSWERED.

Again, here’s a recipe for materials…
-The bluray cases can be found in Criterion’s online store in packs of 5.
-The bluray inserts are printed on matte 60-lb inkjet stock and printed 2-sided.

  • I printed directly onto the blank bluray discs with my Canon Pixma printer
-The mini-posters are printed on high-quality semi-glossy inkjet paper.
-The mini lobby cards are on a matte 60-lb card stock.
-The custom envelops for the posters and lobby cards are semi-gloss inkjet paper.
  • The laserdisc-style card and fake Topps card are both on 60-lb matte card stock, printed both sides.
-The slip cases are on a heavy matte card stock (not sure of weight). I reinforced the spine of the outer case with some white cardboard. I had to have a buddy print these as they were printed on 11x17 card stock.

I recommend getting a bone scorer to help get clean folds. They’re on Amazon for about $6. Everything is glued together with rubber cement using the dry mount method (you apply rubber cement to both surfaces, let it dry and then stick it together). It makes the glue very strong. A caveat that dry mounting cannot be reposititioned, so its important to get it right the first time.

As I haven’t tested these pdf versions, I definitely recommend doing a test print in black & white to avoid wasting ink. I’ll post this is the bluray art thread as well.

Best,
Ron
