A new Indiana Jones?

Can the movie going audience accept a new actor as the iconic Indiana Jones?

I saw an AMC Movie News video with Chris Pratt photo shopped as Indiana Jones.   Now it wasnt a good photoshop because it was a candid goofy smiling Chris Pratt in a tense seen from Raiders but it got me thinking.

I know we cant see anyone but Harrison Ford.  But Pratt could do his own version of Indiana Jones.  Is he physical enough?  Sure.  He is goofy but I've seen him on occasion using a dry sarcastic wit and it works.  He has that vulnerable and imperfect hero thing going.  And he can be a scoundrel and let's face it Indiana Jones is no clean cut boy scout.

What say ye?  Yes?  No?  Do you have someone in mind?

If the franchise is to live on, it wont live on with Harrison Ford forever.

I'm a huge fan of Pratt and would see him in anything. But Indiana Jones? I'm sorry, but for me, Indy is Harrison Ford only. I'd love to see Pratt in his own Indy-type adventure film, though. Shame, imagine if Pratt played Indy's son in KOTCS. I wouldn't have minded if he got a spin-off.

I wouldn't mind seeing the effort, at least if they do it right and don't try to fill it full of special effects, stupid stuff (nuked refrigerator), and ignorant plots (it's the aliens!). A return to old school live action and a good plot would be the absolute cornerstone of getting a new Indy who has a future.

I think Chris Pratt would do the role justice, having seen his work in GotG, I was highly impressed with his work. The part where he was dismayed at the guys not knowing who Star-Lord was, he seemed to have perfect timing and attitude as you'd see in any Indiana Jones flick. I could easily see him "Indiana Jones, guys! Legendary Professor and archeologist? Forget it!"

I think he'd easily fit into the role of Indy as we remember the great adventurer, again though, it all depends on the material and the implementation.

Nice article.  I dont agree the film series has to continue but if it does continue, people are going to have to accept other actor's interpretation of Indy.  Because nobody wants to see someone doing his best Harrison Ford impression.  It would seem disingenuous.  Indy is not disingenuous.

I don't see why they won't just make a cartoon.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I'd just as soon see them recast Han, Luke, and Leia than see them recast Indiana Jones. I'm fine with different interpretations of a character such as Robin Hood for example, because it is a character who was first created in a non-film media. All film interpretations of such a character are just that: interpretations.

One does not simply re-write the Lord of the Rings or 1984. Abridge them, sure. Translate them, adapt them for television or film, of course. But a reimagining of a property within the same media will not place it on the same level as the original.

When somebody points out that it was done successfully with Star Trek and James Bond, I wonder whether it is done for any reason other than brand recognition. There is no reason why the position of 007 cannot be filled by someone other than James Bond, or having the Enterprise commanded by someone other than James T Kirk. I guess people just like the name 'James' too much to let it go.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I would love to see another movie about a character that is SO CLEARLY Indiana Jones, but a different actor with a different name.

Same feel, a new hero theme, slightly different settings, same over the top action bits.

"In the Spirit of Indiana Jones come... ... BROCK CARMICHAEL, Treasure Hunter!"

I highly recommend the film China (1943).

Yeah, I think I'd be fine with this as well. Bradley Cooper doesn't have it at all, but Pratt might be right for the part, and not just because of the look.

Cooper and Pratt are both too funny.

Harrison Ford looked, and sounded like a stoic action hero. So whenever Indiana fumbled, or was goofy, it seemed almost out of place. I think therein lied the charm of the character.

I think an actor closed to that mold might be a Jeremy Rener type.

Again... I personally am opposed to any recasting.

You know as long as he plays it straight and not with a knowing wink at the viewers(That is the job of the Mummy movies and they do it so well I don't want to see see anyone else try it)then I don't hate this idea.  As long as it doesn't go completely goof ball I think it could work.

I was hoping they weren't going to reboot, but I guess why not?

I love adventure movies, and the Indy franchise has got that genre down pat. Every adventure film since has just paled in comparison. Why should a franchise that is over have a monopoly on a genre?

Bring on the soft reboot. No origin story, no pretension that this fits into the continuity of the last four films. New actor, back to the 1930s setting.

Chris Pratt is not Harrison Ford, but that doesn't mean he's not as good. He's just different. Bond has thrived on variation in the casting of their main star. So they should go with Pratt, because he's a fantastic actor. As long as they don't make him act like he's Ford, we should have a great new Indy.

Now hire Brad Bird and get cracking!
