The Phantom Menace - Original Theatrical Cut: (Pan & Scan) VHS Preservation (Released)

Hello all,

I’ve got the pan & scan VHS of the Phantom Menace, in it’s original theatrical cut. I know this will probably interest very few people on this forum, but I figured it could be used as a source for other fan projects.

This can be found on the usual place. I appreciate any and all feedback.

Nice! I've been wanting to see this for quite some time. I think that the P&S versions are interesting because they let you see a lot  of details in close up and makes you feel really close to the characters.

Always two there are, no more, no less. A master and an apprentice.

Hey, thanks! I'm glad someone has found some use for it!

Can you share some details of your capture, like vcr/capture setup/ audio source?  Did you ivtc or is it interlaced?

Thanks for posting, btw.

If I had some gum, I’d chew a hole into the sun…

I've still got my VHS copy of this...  Might have to pull it out and watch it sometime during the holiday season!  :-D

I'm pretty new to this sort of thing, and this capture was initially for my own personal use, but I decided to share it.

The VCR model is a DAEWOO  DV-T8DN. To capture the video, all I did was use some thick, gold plated composite cables (S-video is not available) and plug it into an analog to digital converter from Roxio.I was able to extract the stereo soundtrack as well.

I used Roxio's own software, and did absolutely nothing to the file from there. I left it uncompressed, interlaced - whatever was there is there.

Thanks for asking.

Hey! Finally , the one thing I know about the PT may be of some use!

The P&S version of TPM isn't the theatrical edit! Some shots are missing. The only one i remember is Obi-Wan and Liam Neeson jumping a gap during the fight with face-paint-guy.

Hmmm... very interesting. I wonder why that is. The title of the thread has been updated to reflect this.

I think the scene I mentioned had to be cut as there is no way to crop it and still be able to tell what's happinin'.

I've never read anything about this, but I first noticed it while watchin' the P&S VHS. The jumping the gap shot was in the trailer, I think, and somehow I noticed it was missing.

So, yeah, you're preserving a lost cut of the film!

Seems like a more epic task now! ; )

Handman, there's a cap of the Jap widescreen LD on the spleen if that interests you, it's the theatrical cut and has japaneese subtitles throughout (subtitles are in the borders not the picture). It's pretty close to DVD quality.

Just because it was in the trailer doesn't mean that it was in the theatrical cut. I wonder whether or not it's in the laserdisc.

But it was. So there. : P

Thanks for letting me know. As ray_afraid pointed out, the Pan and Scan release differs a little from the original theatrical cut, and the Pan and Scan-iness offers a possible nostalgia factor. I'll still offer this to anyone who wants it, though there are other options, as you said.

If it's deinterlaced, I'd be interested in seeing it on the spleen.

That'd definitely be awesome along with AOTC. I think they only released ROTS on Widescreen VHS in the U.K.

Tell you what, that'll be my Christmas present to you guys. I won't have time to mess with the video until the end of the month. As is, I don't think the interlacing is too noticeable.

FYI I was a bit lazy and didn't make a link, it's althor1138's, and there are some screenshots in his thread

Could you post some screenshots of your version? Thanks.

I definitely think that there's a generation that would enjoy this.

Speaking of interlacing, why do most HD broadcasts interlace when almost nobody has an interlacing HDTV?

Because 1080p isn't a broadcast standard - they either have to use 1080i or 720p.

I was asking why they don't use 720p.

I know ESPN does. Apparently ABC does too.

Confirming that ABC is 720p.

Disney XD is 720p too.

Wait, so 720p is better than 1080i?
