The more I watch this trailer:

1.  The more I like the lightsaber.  Especially the way in which the wielder presented arms....its bad ass.

2.  The less I care about the soccer ball droid.

If for no other reason, the lightsaber is cool because it isn't a prequel-era glowstick. It crackles with barely contained energy, it's rough and dangerous, it's everything an eviscerating killing device should be.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

As others have pointed out, this is very much a Medieval Long Sword type weapon with reach and possibly even overpowering (as you point out).

And the form of the weapon will shape how the wielder uses it.  The traditional saber was often brought up like a baseball bat when presented.  Clearly this guy uses a different technique/style of fighting that may involve brute force.  It does not appear to be a weapon designed to be twirled like a baton as in the PT.

So maybe the notion the laser hilt presents a danger to the user is..well..nonsense.

Me and my friends have taken to calling it a broadsaber

I agree. No posturing, no waiting for discussion, no wasted motions.  Show up, defiantly and immediately turn on the weapon, stand ready to use it.

Has anyone else noted that they based the Falcon's engine glow on the SE version?

Ah, I suppose your father was slaughtered by a three bladed lightsaber.

Given that the pre-SE glow was just a big white blur with no interior detail, I'm not surprised.

Also, it may be that the white-glow is more of a space thing.

How many of you plan on watching it opening night, no matter what?

I'm seriously considering it.

I'm hoping to, but unless I have my driver's license by then, I probably won't be able to.

I won't.  Opening night will be almost impossible to book, will be crammed full of idiots with smart phones and the loudest most smelly food and it will be overpriced.

I'll watch it around Christmas with my niece probably (she's been to see every Star Wars film with me since 1997).

Did anyone go to see the teaser on the big screen?  I would have if they didn't release it online since it was playing at a nearby theater.

I'm not watching it or any other popular movie on opening night after the Aurora,CO batman massacre.

Call me paranoid but it just sounds like fertile grounds for you know what.

I'm a lot more excited about the timtimfed spoof than about the actual teaser.

It took someone with real appreciation for the desecration of the SW brand to craft that thing.

As for me, I have been calling it "stupid" so far.

If I can't get a ride from my caregiver opening night, I will be calling a taxi. With a full year to plan this out, I may also try and set up, or connect with a local meetup group (on a site such as meetup.com) that would do ride sharing.

That was really funny...

You know Frink, about what you said about the trailer being a teaser not having to have much about story, I have to say I agree with you it is a teaser and that it is not a compulsory thing to include in a teaser.

But I think what it is that I find so jarring about the trailer is the narration does not really match up with the visual it's all just so random. It feels like a bit of a weird mash up of scenes and dialogue that I am a bit confused about what it really is.

It's too early to draw any solid conclusions about it at this time apart from some of me is optimistic but then I also have a bad feeling about it.

That reminds me of Cloud Strife's Buster Sword from Final Fantasy VII.

Which means the next iteration should be a Gunblade Blastersaber a la Final Fantasy VIII (a blaster grip with a fairly broad-bladed lightsaber protruding from the barrel).
