I think it's amazing that a 40+ years old 35mm print scanned on a home built scanner can look better than an official Bluray
It's a bit on the red side, isn't it? But otherwise it looks good - I think the lack of detail is likely due to compression rather than the print or the scanning.
It looks glorious...
its getting there. looking good.
looking for HDTV of the Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Also HDTV of The Lord of the Rings trilogy
I think it looks great!
And like actual film too (I kinda like the flicker).
Can't wait to watch the whole thing!
Snip, Snap, Snorum…Hey, Kak, Kalorum!

To be fair, Ziggy's Paint Wars looks better than the Blus as well.
Thanks for all the comments everyone. Glad you are enjoying the previews, there will be a couple more.
We actually have higher quality hardware now than when we started, so some clips might benefit from this in the future. This was scanned at about 2k and scaled down.
There is some slight color correction done to the clip, but we have noticed different scenes that have red, blue and yellow tints to them.
I don't have any of the 4k scans as a reference. But in general, these were scanned at the sharpest resolution we had. Of course, the high bitrate versions of the clips might be slightly different, compared to these scaled down, and converted clips.

35mm film prints are not that sharp. They are generations down from the original negative. A local art theater had a presentation when they switched to digital projection. They screened 35mm prints versus their DCP restorations and the DCPs were quite amazing and clearly sharper. Too sharp actually. You could see a lot of flaws in the image that were never meant to be seen. The Ghostbusters 4k remastered version was super grainy. I still loved it.
Here is another sample scene from Reel 4, continuing from the previous one:

UPDATE : Fixed video link

Apparently that's an incorrect link or the video is still private. It gives a 403 error when clicked.
It does look quite red shifted, but it's quite amenable to correction to the tech photos:
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
Episode 9 Rewrite, The Starlight Project (Released!) and ANH Technicolor Project (Released!)
Why would it be red-shifted if it's an LPP print? Was the element used to make the print already shifting in the 80s?
That would be my guess. The negative stock that they were using was prone to failure (an error nobody in the industry noticed until it was too late).
Wow, those last two clips Looked great. Thanks for posting them Team Negative1.

Slight cropping.
We have some more samples from Reel 3 coming up,
along with some impressive Deflickering done to previous scenes.

I am thankful for Team_Negative1
Thanks -- looks *amazing*!
Here is a very early and short test of deflickering the footage.
The original is on the bottom:

Just got around to viewing these samples. They look really great, guys! Awesome work!
What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.
I wonder why it's flickery in the first place? Did the print flicker when projected?
Maybe it was a lab problem? When I saw Interstellar in 70mm IMAX, the picture would occasionally flash, as if a single frame was overexposed...
We aren't positive as to what causes it. But when we projected it, the flicker was not noticeable. It is probably dependent on the bulb. I don't see a lot or as much flicker in the other prints of ESB or Jedi.

What was this flickery section captured with?

Help get The Original Trilogy preserved!
We have had several different types of equipment to scan with. Mostly homemade, all of them resulted in similar flicker in the captures.

can't wait.....
Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.
Stay tuned for some longer flicker removal samples. These will really show off the flicker reduction plugin.
