Anyone else blase' about the New trilogy?

Author
Time

As I consider myself an old timer seeing that I was around 10 when STAR WARS first came out and lived and loved my childhood memories of the Original trilogy, I can honestly say I'm just not excited about Episode 7.  It's not actually about the fact the Prequels failed my expectations. I just feel like since Disney took over the flame of excitement I had when the prequels were announced and seeing the first trailers with such happiness is gone.  I am a big fan of J J Abrams new Star Treks, but Star Trek is not Star Wars.  Is anyone else here having my feeling?

Not excited here either. This could change as the (reputable) reviews roll in, though.

I probably won't even bother to see it unless people really rave about it.  The Star Wars franchise has been dead to me for so long, I have my doubts anything can kick it back to life again.

I saw ROTS (for free, come on...) when some people said it wasn't as bad as the other prequels. Never again. Never. Again.

I'm curious, but not excited. Nor do I actually hold out hope that the new sequels will be good.

I've seen three of Abrams's movies. I thought Star Trek 2009 and Super 8 were merely serviceable movies that covered well worn ground and offered me nothing new. Star Trek Into Darkness I actually despise.

Despite that I think he can do much better than modern George Lucas would have with new Star Wars movies. What Abrams will produce will likely look and feel like very familiar, but at least it shouldn't travel down the path of the prequels.

Well, IMHO I really liked Super 8 because I grew up in that period and it was nostalgic for me and as much as I had enjoyed most of the previous Star Treks I thought he put a breath of new life into a somewhat old dog. I guess the only gripe with Into Darkness, even though I adore Benedict Cumberbatch is that all the other characters were pretty much similar in look and tone as the original crew, but Khan was supposed to be from India or southeast Asia, I think so why they would cast a very proper sounding Englishman in the role confuses me.   Getting back to my original post though, I maybe in a minority but I'm not even interested in reading anything about Ep 7 or the fact they are bringing Han, Leia and Luke back.  Should I be?

I'm dying to dress like a Jedi and take my (by then) seven yeAr old to see it.

Were it not for my lad I'd probably be.a bit less excited, but never blase.

I know this topic has been discussed ad nauseum and I apologize, but I had to speak my mind.  I will admit I didnt hate the prequels but they were a pale comparison to the first three. Quoting the words of G. Lucas "it is the story that makes it a good movie and not special effects" well his whole reason for deciding to go back and do these was that he saw how realistic the dinosaurs were in Jurassic Park and he could finally do what he wanted to do with SPfx, now that is the complete opposite of what he said in the past.  Sure the FX were pretty cool in the Prequels but they were SOOO heavy on CG!  If it were'nt for a few of the actors that brought something special into the roles like Ewan Macgregor, Liam Neeson and of course Ian Mcdiarmid the movies could have just been video games.  If J.J. can bring back that certain charm combined with good acting maybe the films will fly but I'm not holding my breath.   One thing more and to me this is kindof a sacrilege, cause I love the man, but I felt John Williams scores for the prequels were kindof "paint by numbers" compared the true symphonic masterpieces that he did in the past. I can sit and listen to his earlier works forever, as they play like true classical compositions where as the prequel music is mostly just background music.

I'm actually more excited about Williams' score more than the movie itself.  However, that may change once the teasers and trailers start rolling out.

Nothing Abrams has done so far convinces me of his ability to tell a story well - it's as simple as that. Let's hope that Super 8 wasn't an accident (aside from that wretched final act), and that the Star Trek reboots weren't his fault.

I'm nervous about who the villain will be and what the Jedi will be like.

I'm excited, cautiously optimistic, and I'll be there opening night, but if it sucks I'm done. My relationship with Star Wars after December 2015 depends entirely upon the quality of Episode VII. If it's better than the prequels, then awesome! That's all I ask for. If it's not, then I'll not bother with any new Star Wars content released after. Simple as that.

I'm honestly not expecting much for the first episode. Like other people mentioned, Abrams, for me, is just a so-so director. Lots of flash but little heart.

I'll definitely see it, and it can't be any worse than the prequels, but yeah. Definitely not feeling the pre-episode 1 hype here. Then again, I'm not a 15 year old kid anymore either.

If the rumors are true and Rian Johnson will be directing the next one, my interest will be really piqued then!

I agree, although my first experience with watching Star Wars was an old late 80's VHS tape rented from blockbuster, but still, I was blown away by it as well. I also have no anticipation for the new trilogy. I will see them, but only if they release the unaltered films in a quality I find acceptable (and I have pretty low standards so it shouldn't be too hard), but I honestly wouldn't be troubled if I didn't see the new movies in their theatrical run. It's not like I'm dreading these films either, I'm sure they'll be fun, but I just have no desire to see them, or at least not enough to spend money on them.

I totally share your blase feeling towards new Star Wars material, lordsidi.

We'll see who's still blase' when the first teaser footage comes out. ;)

Even if Episode VII were complete and utter crap, they could still make the teaser kick ass. The trailers for Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones were positively inspiring compared to the actual movies. I don't mean to be argumentative when I say this.

LOL, I remember when all I had was dial up and I'd wait forever to download those trailers.  I'd analyze every frame with excitement!  Maybe it's because I lived and breathed the original trilogy for so many years before the prequels came out that nothing could have blown me away.  Don't get me wrong there are parts of the prequels I quite enjoy, but when I look back at that time it was Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" that blew me away.

I insist you spell "blasé" with an accent so I don't keep reading it like it's pronounced "blayz" and that you remove the apostrophe that comes after it.

At this point, I'd say I'm mildly excited; there's just enough info about Ep. VII out there to whet my appetite, but still not nearly enough to get me really hungry.

I'll just have to wait for more details on the film to be released before I finally come to a definitive standpoint.

I'm definitely excited, if only to see Star Wars treated with reverence again. The last time that happened was with Kershner at the helm, and we got arguably the greatest Star Wars movie ever. I feel like Episode 7 is very similar to ESB from a creative standpoint. There are high expectations, a dedicated team, new and returning actors, potentially novel applications of special effects technology old and new, and an understanding that the story must be taken in a new and unexpected direction. This last point is the most exciting for me, that they may give Star Wars another twist that makes it interesting for old and new generations alike.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I prefer not having expectations at all and not thinking too much whenever I stumble upon information about it but my bets are on: OT>New Trilogy>PT. For the stand alone movies I expect something with less quality than the new trilogy regardless of how god/bad it goes.

Let's just say I'm a lot more excited for Harmy's upcoming version of Return of the Jedi than I am for Star Wars: Episode VII. If Episode VII starts receiving glowing reviews, I'll start paying attention. Otherwise, I refuse to get my hopes up. Episode I convinced me not to watch Episode II in theaters. Episode II convinced me to not bother to watch Episode III at all for several years. If Disney wants me to watch Episode VII they're going to have to earn it first.

I feel the same way.  I'm certain the new films won't be as much of a letdown as the prequels, but that's not really saying a whole lot.

For me, overwriting the Thrawn trilogy automatically starts them off with 2.95 strikes against them.  I have far more respect for Timothy Zahn as a storyteller than I do for Jar Jar Abrams, and it won't take much to strike out completely.

On some level, I think I actually want them to suck.  The worse they are, the more easily I can disregard them.

We are all diehard SW fans, so our first instinct is either be really hyped (because we are dying for another great SW trilogy) or totally indifferent (because we are afraid of getting burned like the PT again).

I have tried to temper my expectations, yet still enjoy the hype.  I think the first thing we all need to do is not expect the ST to be as great as the OT.  The OT was lightning in a bottle, the characters, the story, the mythology, its a timeless classic.  But just cause it isn't the OT, doesn't mean it still can't be great movies in their own right to satisfy us as fans.

The PT had the problem of having mostly new characters, whereas the ST will benefit with Han, Luke and Leia, Chewy, Millenium Falcon in Episode 7 transitioning us to the new characters.

The PT had the problem of we essentially knew how it ended and who was going to die, where the ST has the suspense the OT movies had because we really don't know where these movies are headed.

The PT had the problem of Lucas going overboard with CGI, whereas it looks like Disney and JJ Abrams are going old school.  Even the director of Episodes 8 & 9 (his name escapes me) talked about in interviews about old school effects, the OOT, puppet Yoda, etc.

Finally the PT had the problem of HUGE expectations that all of us had in 1999.  We are now alittle more wise in our age, and won't make that mistake again.  In a sense, I think many of us here are so apathetic that it could work in the ST's advantage, as they could walk out of Episode 7 pleasantly suprised because they were expecting the worst.

I am not excited or anything. Still when the films come out I will definitely go see them.

I might warn people who are excited about them going "old school" with SFX etc. That doesn't guarantee that the films will have OT feel at all. It takes much much more than that.

I'm a young'un, but I'm pretty excited about Episode VII. I honestly felt very indifferent when it was first announced; the surprise did not translate into thrill. But once Pandora's box was opened, I'm getting my hopes up higher than is responsible. I'm hoping for something good to chew on for a long time, if that makes sense.

If 7 is greater than or equal to ROTJ, I will be happy.
