ANH:R - Stronger Vader edit: *** Released *** — Page 10

Cool edit, but I don't think it's for me. I've always seen Tarkin as the "main villain" in ANH, reluctantly accepting Vader as the thug the Emperor shouldered him with during his command of the Death Star.

This might just be due to the fact that I'm a big Peter Cushing fan; IDK.

Anyway, I don't mean to crap on your edit. It's an excellent idea and I'm sure it will have many, many fans. I guess I'm just interested in seeing if there are any other Tarkin fans around here...

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I'm with ya! I wish Tarkin could have escaped the Death Star and appeared in the following two films as well!

I still haven't seen this yet but it's "almost there".

I too like Tarkin as he is. It makes the Star Wars Universe more expansive but I would have still have him die and have Vader pestered for progress in ESB by a political underling of the Emperor and maybe have Vader kill him in frustration at the end (Ozzel with a political suit instead of a uniform).

That would lead a path to eventually meeting the Emperor in ROTJ. Thus giving Vader a rise to power arc in the Empire while becoming internally more conflicted.

Instead he just gets taken down a peg in ROTJ and simmers a bit in the background which almost makes it look like Vader bumped off his boss because his career prospects had hit a glass ceiling rather than his internal conflict need resolution.

This edit is more about making ANH's Vader match the existing ESB Vader more which is an interesting enterprise and one I'm looking forward to experiencing.

Yes, you should be almost done judging from the torrent client upload data.

Thanks for the help Joshua, the edit is now in my laptop.

Sadly it's just too big to transfer onto my media player (ye olde 4GB file size limit) or burn onto a DVD (ye olde 4.7gb burn limit) so I will probably have to watch it from the computer screen.

Count me as a PM option if you are waiting on this.

4 GB file size limit? Really? I have a simple WDTV media player and never had any problems with file size. I use an external hard disk of course.

I just went for a large size to really minimize the re-compression loss i.e. to provide the best possible quality.

Anyone watched the edit yet? Kind of anxious to hear what you think...

So I've finally had the chance to sit down and watch the finished version. I definitely like what has been done with this edit, in regards more to the changes with Tarkin, more-so than with Vader.

To put this in context, I watched ESB over and over as a kid, LONG before I ever got a chance to see ANH for the first time. So, to me, the Darth Vader as seen in ESB was how I knew the character. Darth Vader was intimidating, scary, and absolutely in charge of everything, with the Emperor being the only exception. All in all, the ultimate badass villain.

So imagine my shock, seeing Darth Vader taking orders from a guy dressed similar to the ones he would force choke over failure. To my childish mind, it made NO SENSE at all! Over time I grew to accept it, but I will always remember that first impression on ANH when I viewed it.

Even with fanedits such as DE's, and later Ady's, it still somehow never occurred to me that Vader could possibly be made to match, in character, to his portrayal in ESB. So when this project was first announced here, I was excited to see the result.

So, with all that being said, I do like this edit as an alternate way to view ANH (as if I didn't have enough options already). Vader seems more like he is overlooking Tarkin's command, perhaps on orders from Emperor Palpatine, rather than being there to take Tarkin's orders. To me, this DOES match up with ESB more.

Other changes, such as slowing down Vader's movements and speech, aren't as noticeable, but they are there. The subtlety of these changes makes them easy to accept, but if they weren't added into the edit, I wouldn't have minded it either.

Other changes to quicken the pace are well done, and I don't notice them really at all while viewing.

Now here's one issue I have with the edit, and it's more of a technical thing, rather than a creative one. It has been noted that during the process of taking ANH:R from DVD to video files for editing, that the fps has been changed from 23.28 to 29.97, and it does show. The most that I noticed the issue was during the title reveal, as it makes it appear that the STAR WARS title is slightly stuttering as it pulls away from the camera. It's noticeable if you look for it. As time went on, I had forgotten about it and got absorbed into the movie, but that doesn't mean it isn't still there.

Then again, when using a fanedit as your source, you risk the chance of losing video quality in the conversion process. Since ANH:R was so well done for an SD fanedit, that helps in the VQ department, regardless.

Audio-wise, since it is converted to stereo, I feel it is a downgrade from Ady's excellent 5.1 mix. I missed that when viewing the film, since I prefer to watch with my surround system. Still, as a stereo track, it had no errors, and I had no problems understanding the dialogue or having to change the volume during action scenes.

All in all, this is a great edit, despite it's technical faults. I would recomment at least a one-time viewing, to see if you like it. It will not be replacing my copy of ANH:R, but it will exist alongside it in my collection.

oh_riginal, I am glad you liked the edit.

Ok, to address some issues, from small to the bigger ones.

Downmix to stereo: I have a quality HiFi system, but only stereo (for music I never liked surround), and editing in 5.1 takes more time than 2.0. Never really considered 5.1 audio edit.

slowing down Vader's movements and speech, aren't as noticeable, but they are there.

Some more, some less noticeable, but I do think that all those small changes amount to the stronger character of Vader.

And... as for the stuttering...it is slightly noticeable during the panning shots only.

This is my first edit, and I wasn't careful enough at the start of the edit. Somewhere in the middle I have noticed that I have both the progressive/interlaced and frame-rate set wrong. The change to progressive was not a problem, but I tried to set the project to the correct frame-rate, and the timing of the edited clip got all messed up. At that time my main goal was to finish what I started, and I deemed the small technical misstep acceptable.

I did notice it while watching the finished edit, and like oh_riginal, after the intro sequence, I forgot about it, so I guess it is not a big deal. On the other hand, I am mad at myself for this stupid mistake. Perhaps later on, if there is enough interest I could try to change the project to the correct frame-rate and then fix the timing of all the clips.

I anyone has downloaded the torrent, plz seed, so other can get it. SpeedyShare link should still be up too.

I delved deeper into framerate issues only to find out that each source VOB file has it's own framerate. Now I regret choosing such a simple editor as KDENLIVE as I cannot make the different framerates work together.

I did however get an idea - I'll render separate parts of the whole project, each with it's own corresponding framerate and then join them in AVIDEMUX. I have tested it on two smaller samples and it seems to work.

I was almost out of ideas.

Vader’s voice on Tantive IV always bothered me. He had a chilling bass voice in other instances. I would love to see this version with a powerful Vader. Please do send the link to download your project so I can enjoy it.
