STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread — Page 25

Got a "Rebels" kids meal at Subway today.

I just can't get past that lame pink Boba Fett lady with no sleeves.

Just like Asokha in her biker shorts and halter top, in a WAR at 14 years old! The adults had armor, she had a sexy gym suit. And when she got more mature (at 15) they gave her a shirt with a boob window. All the good characterization was undermined every time I looked at her.

Did it at least come with a cool toy? The best Subway could come up with for Guardians of The Galaxy were backpacks.

You keep saying there are JediS. There's a single Jedi and he keeps his saber hidden and only uses it under extreme circumstances.

You make it sound like the show is about a squad of renegade Jedi.

Only one? I've only seen two clips and I know there's Obi-Wan, New-Jedi-Guy, Aladdin-jedi-kid and possibly Yoda. That's at least three, maybe four.
Not to mention any bad-guy jedi types that might* pop up.

Personally, I'd have liked to see the Jedi wiped out by Ep.2 with none seen until Ep. 4 to give the Empire time to build it's propaganda against them and for a few generations to grow up without them around.

I know that having 4 jedis around in a large galaxy is pretty much the same as having none, but I just prefer the idea that Obi-Wan and Yoda were truly the last and were in extreme hiding. Not running around having crazy adventures with other lightsaber wielding wizards.

So, the show's not for me. No big deal. Most Star Wars isn't for me.

There's one Jedi, Kanan.

The kid is an orphan with Force sensitivity.

Obi-wan only appears in a prerecorded message and there has been NO indication that Yoda will be appearing.

As for villains, there is one Imperial Inquisitor who weilds a lightsaber. He is not a Sith nor a Dark Jedi.

Just a head's up. If you get DisneyXD through your local television provider you can watch REBELS' premiere right now.

I watched it tonight and it was PHENOMENAL. Best Star Wars anything I've seen in a long time.

Started off a heck of a lot stronger than Clone Wars did and definitely felt more like Star Wars than CW ever did too!

My reservations about Sabine are completely gone. Great character with a great bit of personal flair.

The concerns others have had about the show being too kiddy were completely unfounded. This was real Star Wars through and through.

Loved it!

Clearly the stormtroopers of the OT are not the Aussie clones of the PT.

What was the intro like? Was there a crawl? I can't have Star Wars without my crawl.

Just watched the first part. I'll avoid any kind of spoilers...

First things first, the animation is indeed terrible, amateurish, floaty, overdone, underdone, uninspired etc. However, everything else is soooo right that that first major flaw is quite easy to overlook.

It only took 31 years but finally somebody has made a film/video that actually felt like honest to goodness Star Wars. You care about the characters, the story, the stakes and the drama. It's got blaster shootouts, dogfights, last-minute-escapes and danger. After watching, it seemed easy and obvious: Just take all the good things about the OT and then make a show featuring them. Maybe it just took GL not being in the way to do this seemingly simple thing.

When one of the characters pulls out a certain thing towards the end it felt like something special and epic. I was so pumped by the end that when a certain other character from the OT uttered a certain 3 word refrence back to the OT, I suddenly surprised myself and shoved my fist in the air and shouted "Yes!".

I cannot wait to see more of this show and if the ST is even just a little better than this then I'll be happy.

(Oh and no crawl, there's always fanedits)

Wow, I think I have to see this. Unfortunately I'll probably have to wait a while.

Also forgot to mention the design and look. It looks like it takes place in the Star Wars universe, the ships, "props", costumes, locations, "sets" all look the part. Again kinda surprising that it's taken 3 decades to make something that does that.

(Although a few short videogame FMVs in the 90s did a bang up job on this front too)

Hopefully, they will officially post episodes online, because hell will freeze over before my cable company gets DisneyXD.

It seems the short previews being shown on YouTube are not sufficient to give anyone a good understanding of what the complete episodes and series will be like. I watched the previews and my first thoughts were "awful", "amateurish" and "childish". Hopefully once I see some full episodes I will be forced to eat my words. Somehow I suspect that Aladdin-like character will grate at my nerves. Why did Disney rehash Aladdin? Surely they are not so broke that they had to resort to cloning old animated characters.

Wow. Watched it last night. Waited by the door for my girlfriend to get home so I could force her to watch it with me. Felt like a kid waiting to go to the theater to see Star Wars in '77.

I won't spoil the plot of the show, but I will give my detailed impressions on the feel of the show and some of the characters.

I felt it. I felt the magic. When I saw The Clone Wars movie in theaters, it wasn't like this. There were tingles. Star Wars was back. If this is a taste of how Episode VII will feel, I'm sold already.

Now, to complain a bit, Ezra's face is stupid, yeah, the close up shots of him are just bleh; there are also some detail problems as far as hair and characters go (some look great, like Hera, even Kanan, but others don't look that great in terms of quality, like Ezra and Sabine), but considering The Clone Wars underwent a massive facelift itself at one point, I wouldn't be surprised to see the animation and detail on Rebels improve a lot over the course of the show. And outside of the characters, the show is gorgeous. As a 3D artist myself, you see all kinds of specular things, reflections, bloom, and other little details that are a dead giveaway of quality and it's all there.

It's incredible to see stormtroopers again. Not to mention Star Destroyers and walkers. Everything makes the correct sounds. The blaster bolts are lifted straight from the OT and the lightsaber (THE lightsaber, there's only one so far) looks like a cross between McQuarrie concepts and Jedi Outcast (which is awesome).

To focus on that saber a bit, it wasn't used willy-nilly at all. And, frankly, it was awesome to see it. It felt like a relic, something you weren't supposed to see or know about. Like something that people didn't know or understand, like those that understood knew that it carried a certain gravity, and it was a weapon to be treated with reverence, and the use of which carried a certain price.

The prequel references were slim to none. All the aliens were established OT aliens. I feel like you could drop the PT entirely and watch Rebels and keep that mystery about The Clone Wars alive. So far, at least.

There were so many nods to McQuarrie and Johnston concepts that I lost track of all of them.

Most importantly about all the characters is that I cared about them. They were real. I was invested in their stories and how they reacted to things. They felt like they belonged in Star Wars. Some of the humour was a bit goofy (often not in a bad way), but it is a kid's show and the majority was spot-on.

Kanan is a good character. He's a sarcastic wit, but he's a serious leader as well. It seems like he and Hera have a relationship already, which is nice, because we don't have to go through that annoying "will they won't they" thing they always have to do.

Ezra is like a smaller, less controlled, more rebellious Kanan. And it works. Sure there's a little Aladdin in him, I guess, but I didn't sense a complete copycat.

My reservations about Sabine are gone. She's actually... cool... so far. Like... legitimately cool. I was shocked, because I was ready to not like her at all.

Now, it did felt like the version I saw was a PAL version or something, because the cuts and transitions felt rushed; I felt like I didn't have much time to react to what just happened before we were onto the next thing, but other than that it was pure Star Wars. In fact, this was more Star Wars than Star Wars has been in a long time.

But overall, it followed the OT recipe perfectly: action, adventure, mystery, discovery, destiny. Close escapes, firing at enemies while backing up the ramp to the ship, breaking into Imperial bases, stealing secret intel, and mean bad guys. But also wit and dialogue. I feel like the Ghost is much more of a character in its own right than The Clone Wars' Twilight ever was.

The music was new takes on recognizable themes which put me right into the universe. The lilting Force theme when Ezra felt the Force tug at him seriously gave me tingles every time, like I was feeling the Force right there with him. It brought me right back to watching the OT as a kid, I kid thee not.

No musical numbers, either, for those legitimately worried about that.

We're only one episode in, so there could be changes for the worse as we progress and learn more about the characters, but this start is so much stronger than The Clone Wars (rewatched that recently and have no idea WHY they chose the episodes they did for the premiere movie). I'm very optimistic and cannot wait to see where they take this. Star Wars is alive and well, folks.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

Just watched because why not. I have to agree this show is very good, and I am excited for its future. Will definitely continue to watch.

Some complaints. Animation obviously sucks as everyone has been saying. It ranges from good (ships, surfaces, stormtroopers, even some imperials) to distractingly horrendous (egad, those wookies). Ultimately, though, this is something that will get in the way of my enjoyment of the show.

Specific criticism of this episode: I thought Act III was rather lacking. My investment dropped a bit, it was mostly just an action sequence. Kanan pulling out his lightsaber was pretty lame, actually. Awkwardly handled, missed opportunity. Plus it wasn't really a reveal because Ezra and us saw it before. The Obi-Wan appearance was cool but "a new hope" made me roll my eyes.

Of course, like I said, this was episode specific. The show has a lot of potential. I still haven't formed a solid opinion on any of the characters yet, but that's normal. Kanan made the least impression which is probably because his defining trait was hidden until the end. Anyway, I like what I've seen of them all so far.

Should be a good show.

The thing that I liked the most was the roto work. The saber felt alive and the blaster bolts 100% authentic. Such a thrill to see that kind of dedication.

Another thing I liked was it didn't do that cartoony thing of a bad guy getting hit, shot, blown up etc and they just shake their heads and get up. "Phew, they weren't really hurt".

Nope, when one of the Rebels blasted a Stormtrooper in this, then that was it, they were going to join the force ;-)

Also the Force was the OT Force, not the PT Force yay!

Anybody seen this backdrop from Disney's official site?

Notice anything strange about it? If you gave 3 year old a copy of Photoshop they could have done better.

OK I hated the animation style, but I liked the characters immediately. It took many episodes till I started to like the Clone Wars characters. The story was OK too

Here you go Disney, a new "improved" version...

Nope not completely true. I get both Disney and DisneyXD through my local hometown cable but cant watch it because sadly my hometown cable isn't a participating cable provider.

I wish I could share the enthusiasm of others. I watched the first episode and did not like it at all. Far too "Disneyfied" for my tastes sorry. :-(

When was the last time you watched Star Wars (1977) if I may ask? =P

And how would you say Rebels is more "Disneyfied" than say...DROIDS?
