The fundraising campaign he started only managed to raise a little over 800 dollars of the 20,000 dollar goal.
I'm not sure about the fate of the film but he did manage to turn the road tour into a documentary. You can watch the trailer for it here.
No idea about the release date for that but I would sure like to see both someday.
It raised over $18,000. But the fundraiser was to fund his "road trip" and not to finish the film. he says he needs $500k to do that

Here's what he wrote after the the fundraiser finished:
Thanks to the generosity of family, friends, and fans from around the world, the "Hearts of Dorkness" Tour has done exactly what we hoped it would do-- and more! We are now in discussions with a major distributor who asked to see the film BECAUSE of the publicity generated by the TIFF NEXT WAVE screening. And the TIFF screening only happened because the people behind it noticed internet coverage of the "Hearts of Dorkness" Tour. And THAT only happened because of YOU. And so the time has come to end THIS campaign. But that doesn't mean we don't still need support! Morgan Flores is in the early stages of editing her feature length documentary of the journey,"HEARTS OF DORKNESS: The Road to 5-25-77". (for more info visit: http://www.heartsofdorkness.com) And I am suiting up for the final "Death Star Trench Run" to bring "5-25-77" to THEATERS EVERYWHERE!Look for NEW campaigns to help with both efforts, soon! THANK YOU, AGAIN, FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!
But this was posted May 2013 and nothing since.
