Yup.  I can sync up Luke's first line in the movie but when Han is responding to him, it's already out of sync.

Use eac3to's "-slowdown" option to convert PAL to NTSC speed and pitch, and it should line up much better.

eac3to doesn't seem to know what an .ogg file is.

Transcoding it...

What program are you using for the editing? I definitely wouldn't recommend transcoding the file more than absolutely necessary, seeing as how it already has a very low bitrate. I was able to open it in Audacity and you can slow it down in there and export lossless wav and use that for the editing - eac3to will probably make it an AC3 file, right? And you definitely don't want that!

Author

I'd like to use Audacity to slow it down, but what are the correct settings?  I know you can change speed, pitch and tempo....but not sure of the right things to change it from pal to ntsc.

I'll do some research.

eac3to can input and output WAV files, so no lossy conversions there.

Actually this value is lots of different values depending on where you look.  I think the value is over 4.2% but less than 4.3%. I have it down to some level of precision somewhere, but really I recommend just using eac3to for this bit, using WAV input and output.

yeah, let me try the WAV through eac3to

Still testing...

This link helped.

EDIT: Ok, just so no one else is wasting their time, this is going pretty smoothly now.  I'm 30 mins in on the rough cutting of the narration for Empire.  Will keep you posted.

Ok, I've run into a point where I'll need some guidance.

I'm at the scene where Vader first goes and kneels before the Emperor hologram.  The speech is different for the 97SE as it is from the GOUT.

Now, I can edit it if you like, I just need to know what you guys think is best since I'm trying to match the 97SE to the DE version while still giving the people that want to hear the 97 what they want.

Let me know.  I'm paused on the project at this point.

What? It should be exactly the same.

EDIT: You're right - obviously, the information I was given that it is from the 97SE was wrong - this is clearly the 2004 version. In that case, you should definitely swap it for the original version of the scene, since there doesn't seem to be any narration during it anyway.

This is possibly the most minor change of all, but since it was an SE change it must be fixed! I noticed that in the GOUT there is a large mark on the floor (and more smaller ones) near Leia's feet, and it's gone in the SE.

I couldn't post the image here, so I posted the link.

Hmmmm. I can't see any kind of mark.

Found it:

They look like spent shell casings from Leia's blaster. I guess we were all looking at the windows for so long we missed the floor!

Ok, so this is the 2004 LD version?  No problem - I'll make it work. :)

Are we sure that's just not something on the print? I mean, it seems to me that's the kind of thing that would be cleaned up in even the most purist's version of a UOT restoration.

Yes, we can verify that the marks are there on 4 our of prints. Will post a screenshot of them.

It's not as easy as just synching the sound of the 97SE mix to the DeEd because it has the narration in places where there is no dialogue, including the added bits (but @yoda-sama: it is the '97SE, so most of those changes you mention aren't there) but if you guys want to give it a shot, here you go:

ESB

ROTJ

The bitrate is pretty low but it's the best I managed to find.

Would you be interested in a track using the script from those files but with new narration over one of the original sound mixes?
That way there would be no SE sounds, no chopped edits and the sound quality would be much better.
I think I'll do it for myself anyway, so if you (or anyone else) are interested I'll share.

Wouldn't a new narration go against the idea of this being "preservation"?

@ray: That would probably actually be the best solution - the sound quality of those files is awful, they use the SE soundtrack and they aren't very well edited - there are these distracting volume jumps every time the narration starts and ends.

@Nick66: The script would be the same, plus I don't think anyone really cares to preserve these particular narration tracks made for the 2004DVDs (plus they are preserved in those files) - it's just about having the option of the narrative track.

I'll be taking the script from the seeing impaired track Harmy posted. The track isn't available on anything but the 2004 SE, so there's no 1980 version to preserve. I have friends that benefit from these sort of tracks, so I'll be making these for them.

JEDIT: Harmy beat me to the response : )

Should I just continue on with what I'm doing with the ESB track?

I don't see much point in preserving the tracks in their current state--they exist for accessibility, and if better accessibility can be achieved by re-recording the voiceover, I'm all for that.  Don't we have a few forum members with silky-smooth radio voices?  Mavimao?
