I remember someone mentioning that before; I think Harmy missed it. It is a bit jarring, isn't it?

I haven't been keeping up on this thread so I'm sorry to repeat this. I only just noticed it, but I figured I'd mention it just in case so it's on the list for the next version. It's great that SW and Empire are so far along now that the only noticeable problems are so minor.

Since it is usually wise to do the opposite of what Nearsighted Scrappile says, I think Harmy should go into hiding.

Did I say something to piss you off? I can't tell when people joke online, so I thought I'd ask.

Anyway,

About the sound "discrepancy", Is there a tutorial on how to make the changes permanently to Star Wars v.2.5 and The Empire Strikes Back v.2.0? My forté is audio mastering and preservation, so when it comes to HD video, I am still learning.

Well, I was mostly joking, but the statement was rooted in your history of saying things I consider opposite of general sense, not to mention that time you jumped the gun and made a SW 2.5 torrent before it was ready.  So, yes and no, but over all, life's too short to take things too personally.

This is possibly the most minor change of all, but since it was an SE change it must be fixed! I noticed that in the GOUT there is a large mark on the floor (and more smaller ones) near Leia's feet, and it's gone in the SE.

I couldn't post the image here, so I posted the link.

Hmmmm. I can't see any kind of mark.

As an aside, I have to admit I love the Cloud City windows. It's the only new SE SFX I really appreciated...really opened up the place and gave it a sense of space & awe, instead of looking like a hospital cooridor. It's properly gone in Harmy's version, of course, but I've always liked what they did there. And Empire with Harmy's colours and this as the only SE change would probably be my go to version for this film.

Say what you will, but I've always felt the additions have been nothing but needlessly distracting from what's actually going on.  It opens stuff up, sure, but the shortsightedness of Lucas was in thinking that superfluous stuff happening in the environment was as important as the plight of the main characters.  Hell, that shit outside is sharper and more drawing of the eye than what is happening up close; THAT is just a major movie-making mistake.

@mfm Do you mean marks like what appears below the "D" in "DVD" on the GOUT?  If so, that's print damage that just needs to go...  (and Harmy replaced it with actual film scans, so you can't ask for much more definitive than that)

I hear you, and don't get me wrong I despise the SE's, all of them.  But the Cloud City windows is the one thing I do like, so shoot me. :)  Though I agree, it could have been done better.

I agree, re: that the mark on the floor (and I can barely see it) looks to me like print damage.

This ends up being why it's so important for projects like Harmy's to restore the original film. Once we have a very, very good copy of the unaltered film, fans can go back in and add in whatever SE stuff they want, or even add new effects and scenes.

John McCoy's piece, "A Bad Motivator" [1] makes a good argument that copyright is supposed to expire for this exact reason. Once the work is allowed to belong to the public and not one stakeholder, fans can decide for themselves what to do with it.

Hey,

just wanted to say that the Picasa comparison gallery that is linked in the first post is down, if you have not noticed yet.

Darth Id on ‘Why “Ben”?’:

And while we’re at it, we need to figure out why they kept calling Mark Hamill’s character “Luke Skywalker,” since it’s my subjective opinion that his name is actually Schnarzle Shnuzzle.  It just doesn’t make sense!

Damn you George Lucas for never explaining why they all keep calling Schnarzle “Luke”!

Damn You!!!

Oh, yeah, I forgot to change it - here's a link to the new one:

Ooh I see it, under the D in DVD on the GOUT there is a mark on the floor!

Harmy (or anyone who can answer)...I noticed there are two audio tracks on SW 2.5 that aren't on ESB 2.0...the 1985 stereo LD mix and the 2004 Star Wars.com audio commentary. Were these tracks simply unavailable, and if so do we expect them to be in the future? Thanks!

I don't know about the StarWars.com commentaries, but I do know that Empire and Jedi were not remixed in 1985, only Star Wars.

For ESB and ROTJ it only exists for the 97SE and unlike the commentaries, it would be pretty difficult to re-cut it to fit the original - I have the files, if someone wants to attempt it though and then I'd be happy to include it in the next release.

As for that Web Commentary, I'd love to include that too but no one seems to have it for ESB and ROTJ.

Someone would need to sync the 97SE sound with the sound on the current DE versions?  If so, I could give that a shot.  I can start with one and then if all goes well, I'll do the second one.

And if that doesn't work out, I can be backup for trying to sync and/or despecialize the visually impaired tracks.  FWIW, I've found the '93 audio for Star Wars works best for patching over SE elements in Star Wars.

Well, you'd need to do more than just sync it up, I'd think.  The best courses I can think of would either be to sync up the track, while removing extra bits to make it fit, and replacing SE movie audio with an OOT source, or take one of the OOT mixes and plop in descriptive audio snippets where they belong.  Otherwise, what's the point of including it if it is full of SE changes like Jango's voice, new Emperor, alternate takes (e.g. not "You're lucky you don't taste very good"), Vader's nnnnnNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo, freaking Jedi Rocks...  (may have thrown some '04/'11 changes into my examples, but whatever)  Anyway, just keep in mind how much work you're facing with the options available, and save yourself some pain by picking your ultimate solution from the get go.

It's not as easy as just synching the sound of the 97SE mix to the DeEd because it has the narration in places where there is no dialogue, including the added bits (but @yoda-sama: it is the '97SE, so most of those changes you mention aren't there) but if you guys want to give it a shot, here you go:

ESB

ROTJ

The bitrate is pretty low but it's the best I managed to find.

Just wanted to chime in and say excellent work, Harmy! I'm too young to have seen the original ESB in theaters (I grew up with the 1992 VHS set), but somehow this manages to feel like the movie I remember watching over and over again as a 5 year old more than anything else I've seen (even the GOUT, which is closer to the quality level I actually saw it at).

You're doing great work. Can't wait for Jedi 2.0!

Wow - just comparing the ESB 97SE with the 2.0 stereo in ESB v2.0, they're not even the same musical notes during the intro.  The 97 is higher pitched. :P
