That might have have been a better introduction to him than we ultimately got. Wonder if Brooks worked from an earlier draft of the script?

I don't think so. Here's what I could find on the "revised rough draft" of the Phantom Menace, simply called "The Beginning": http://secrethistoryofstarwars.com/thebeginning.html

This opening scene is a fleshed out version of Anakin's near-fatal podrace crash which was only referenced in the script/film. It made for a more immediately engaging start to the book (which you should totally read on Amazon). I still remember that opening, it's so much better than the film.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Doesn't Anakin help an injured Sandperson, or something like that, in that book? If I recall correctly, Jar Jar is less annoying--but still annoying.

I wasn't aware of how different that book was. I just had a skim read on Amazon as you suggested. What the f**k, that opening was awesome! What in the nine hells was wrong with George Lucas? He had a good movie and ruined it. I'm getting that book for my Kindle just to annoy myself ;-)

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

Apparently so, though I don't remember it:

I don't remember much else of the book past the opening, but I do remember that it made more sense than the film.

What the hell? I thought it was Vader sneaking in to get a last kiss from Padme for a moment there.

I didn't know Baron Underbheit was a sith lord?

That rough draft is awesome, and would of made for an amazing film.

Listened to the 1977 Nils Lofgren live album "Night After Night" last night.

During his opening tune "Take You to the Movies" he slips in at one point (in place of the titular lyric), "I'm gonna take you to see Star Wars," and the crowd responds with a hearty cheer.

These are of course grown-ups, at a time when the movie was still fresh and new.  A great reminder of how the film was universally beloved by people of all ages, and it represented such a timely, unadulterated thrill.  A breathtaking, escapist joyride that everyone was taking together.

I know it's only a matter of time before the SW Universe becomes a part of the Marvel Multiverse, but God, I'm loath to see it happen.

I'm sure there will be one offs like the X-Men/Star Trek books, but I doubt there will be anything beyond that.

A crossover with Guardians of the Galaxy might be fun!

Hey now, I was able to properly identify that Park and Rec bit just from the top half of the poster. I framed my statement as a question because.

Looking at a magazine downloaded from starwarsarchives.com, I came across a picture of Darth Vader calling him "Major Darth Vader" in the caption. Does anyone know where his military rank comes from (not the real life rank, for those of you who think I'm slow)? That's the first time I've seen him with a rank like that and I'm curious to know where else that occurs and why they made him a major.

Let me guess, Star Wars Poster Monthly? There was a lot of made up stuff in the early days that didn't come from George.

I believe the magazine is called Science Fantasy. I figured Vader's rank might have just been made up, but I wondered if there were any other instances of this, or if there was another source for the rank.

The same magazine also calls Luke's lightsabre blade white.

Maybe it was already known at the time, that Darth Vader was a dick, so they were basically just saying that he's a major dick. ;-)
