Why I dislike Adywans Star Wars revisted

Ok so I know that this site absolutely loves these edits and I can certainly see why; they give a glimpse of what the SE could have been. I will also admit that there are stuff that I like about it, mainly the fixing of mistakes 100% which I fully appreciate. But why oh why didn't he just leave it at that.

I have no doubt that Adywan is a very talented editor and computer modeler, and I cannot wait for him to work on ROTJ and the prequels. But he completely ignored the entire look and style of ANH and ESB and instead tried to make it look like a modern film.

Star Wars is a work of its time, it is a 70s film. Alot of the stuff Adywan has added doesn't work and messes with the overall visual style of the movie. Almost like George Lucas, he takes out stuff which George Lucas put in and just replaces it with similar maybe less dumb stuff and watch people say he's a genius. There are stuff that I like, like the enhanced lightsaber battle between Obi Wan and Darth Vader but unfortunately the bad outweighs the good. For example he completely changed the music cue at the death star battle and made rebel base look completely different. He also altered the destruction of Alderan and the added GGI explosion does not fit with the style of the movie, I'm sorry.

Also a lot of the music cues have been tampered with, and I find it slightly hypocritical that you guys do nothing but complain about the official SE when Adywan has done pretty much the same thing and you welcome that with open arms.

Minus the mistakes, I like the original unaltered Star Wars as it is and I don't like anyone tampering with it fan or George Lucas.

But again this is just my opinion, for those of you that like it more power to you.

The difference between complaining about a fan edit's changes and Lucas' changes is the fact that you have to go out of your way to see fan edit changes, while Lucas' changes are the only versions you can find, which are available in every store in town. You don't like a fan edit, you can ignore it. It's really easy.

I think you will find this site is made up of members with individual tastes an preferences.  To say the site loves a particular edit is a bit of a generalisation.  We're here because of our love of the original trilogy (in particular, the pre-SE versions), rather than of any particular fan edit.

For my part, I appreciate all the effort that went into the making of ANH:R, but most of the changes themselves I'm not all that keen on.

Regardless, it is only a fanedit; it isn't like the SE, which is being forced upon everyone whether they want it or not.

At least adywan can spell words good. Also, what 005 said.

I know, I hate the SE and I know that George Lucas' are the only ones you can find. I am a major supporter of Harmy restoring the original cuts of Star Wars. I'm just saying that if you guys hate the SE (Which I do too) why do you like Adywan.

To Jonno

Yes I can finally do smooth edits, It just takes practice ;)

To TV Frink

I don't think my grammar was too bad.

The reason why I made that generalization was because there seems to be a big hype for Adywans next installment, so I got that impression sorry.

Since we are at it... technically "good" is not an adverb.

Adywan's intention was to bring the movies into the present so that the Star Wars saga could look more uniform in its visual style. His intention was to create an alternate special edition, not to replace Star Wars or to restore it to its 1970s state, which has already been done.

His changes had logic behind them, and many of them fixed mistakes with the movies, or helped make the movie more visually consistent with the prequels. The SE left many errors as is, and added many silly things that weren't necessary or wanted.

Nothing against Ady and "Revisited," but I didn't really see logic in adding a TF Battle Droid head in the Jawa sandcrawler, using a different shot of R2's head when 3PO says "...because you won't get it" (I hear the sound of R2's gears inside his head before it turns), adding an electric beam to the torture droid or pasting himself into the throne room ceremony at the end.

Again, I mean no disrespect to Adywan or his fan-edit.

That's true. Not everything he did was for a good reason, but most things were.

Author

Agreed.  I did like how he made the Battle of Yavin as intense as the Battle over Endor.

I said that the mistake fixing was the one thing I liked about them.

I know. I also addressed the other side of his edit.

(I don't like Star Wars Revisited, or Empire Revisited, even though I haven't seen that one yet.)

Did you really need to start a new thread for this denouncement? Couldn't you have said this in the general Star Wars discussion thread?
Was this necessary?

Never mind. This made it worth it!

Okay, Why didn't he just fix the mistakes of the originals and make the prequels more in style with the OT rather than the other way round.

Because it would be incredibly difficult to make the PT look like the OT without also bringing the OT more up to date. Would you have preferred him to delete most of the ships in the PT battles rather than adding them in the Yavin battle, which he did seamlessly? Or how about the holographic displays? Would you rather he stuck with the displays in the OT which are far below the level of what we have today, in what is supposed to be a more advanced society, and instead removed the PT displays and made them look like they were from the seventies (or earlier, since the PT takes place between 30 and 20 years before the OT, in-universe)?

How can you "dislike" something that is totally free and that you have to choose to seek out and download yourself? It makes no sense.

Well, you can dislike such a thing, but it makes absolutely no sense to then go and create a thread for the purpose of declaring your dislike.

I would actually like to see him make the prequels look like the 70s a lot, I said this in my first post and I will say it again, Star Wars is a work of its time and updating it is stupid and disrespectful. Which are the most classic films, the most memorable, the best, and the ones we should be inspired by, the originals or the prequels.

Author
Time

Perhaps it would be nice to see that, but it is technically impossible. That's why he's bringing the movies closer to a middle point. The OT will still look older and the PT newer, but there will be a better balance between them.

I think that with the skills that man has any visual and stylistic challenge is possible, its just were the effort is put, and it was put in the wrong place.

You think it is possible to make the PT look like a 70s movie? LOL

Such a thing is only possible if he remakes the movie from scratch, or perhaps gets the original footage with bluescreens/greenscreens and inserts new background footage. He doesn't have the resources, time, or budget for any of that, I'm afraid, not to mention that he doesn't do CGI modeling himself (or has done very little, at any rate).
