Does the Phantasm series count? It has a lot of SF elements...

How they kept the lid on this for so long in this age of internet leaks and sneaks is amazing. I was afraid they would never make another one, or someone would do a lame reboot.

I'm almost more jazzed about this than the SW sequel. ;)

Where were you in '77?

I notice you're missing Snowpiercer. I saw that one a week or so ago and it is amazing.

Edge of Tomorrow was really good. Need to see Snowpiercer

Yeah Snowpiercer is a great film. I left it off because it was originally released last year in South Korea. It's just barely now making it to the States having narrowly survived Weinstein's butcher knife.

Lucy looks like abject shit. Just utter shit; all based on a thoroughly-debunked nonsense idea.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

The ignore the "100% of her brain" line and replacenit with "now that lady has The Force!"

"Force Hand Morph"? "Force Hair Colour Change"? "Force Go-Back-In-Time"? Bah.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

Just saw the trailer for Predestination. Looks like it's out pretty soon. Cannot wait to see that. Finally a film based on a Heinlein novel I've actually read  :)

I have high hopes for this one.

Automata

This looks really cool, actually. And I don't really like movies!

Updated Automata with a better copy of the trailer.

Gotta say, before this trailer came out I was most looking forward to Interstellar for the rest of the year. But now Automata has definitely taken its place.

And yet you frequently post on a movie fansite.

Star Wars is no mere movie, Sir.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

Does X-men: Days of Future Past count for this thread?  Just saw it Saturday night and absolutely loved it, both as a film in its own right, as well as for the lengths it goes to repair the problems with the franchise.

Argghhh, Automata was released on the 10th but I don't see any showings near me. =(

Nope.  It's neither science nor fiction.

Not a bad year for Sci-fi after all.

Guardians of the Galaxy was frigin' awesome.

I loved Edge of Tomorrow - I'm actually really sorry I didn't go see it in the theatres, because based on the trailers, it looked like another mindless action sci-fi with Tom Cruise but it turned out to be a really interesting story.

I've only recently seen the new Planet of the Apes and thought it was really good too, albeit the apes still looked too CGI.

And I think most comic book movies are sci-fi at their core (someone getting super-powers due to scientific experiments or genetic mutations is a very sci-fi concept) so I would count the new Captain America and the new X-Men among the really good sci-fi films of this year.

And then there's Interstellar of course - I didn't think it was all that amazing but there were some really good parts, plus it gave me an opportunity (possibly the last ever) to see a movie in IMAX 70mm (the Prague IMAX re-asembled their already decommissioned 70mm projector for it) and that was amazing!

First post has been updated to take into account a number of films that were pushed back. One notable example Welcome To Yesterday was even renamed to Project Almanac.

Another, Prospect, turned out to be a short film. It can be watched here.

2014 actually ended being a great year for science fiction films (US release dates).

Edge of Tomorrow was supposed to be good, been meaning to watch it.

Godzilla wasn't as good as it could have been, but was still enjoyable.

Robocop was surprisingly not bad.

X-Men: Days of Future Past and Guardians of the Galaxy were comic book movies at their most sci-fi (and most fun).

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was one of the best installments of one of the best sci-fi franchises.

Jodorowsky's Dune was an intriguing documentary about probably the best sci-fi movie never made.

Under the Skin and Snowpiercer (and The Double but I'm not 100% if it was sci-fi) were absolutely fantastic sci-fi films that went under the radar, but are/will hopefully gain some attention on streaming sites and home video.

And Interstellar was of course one of the greatest sci-fi films ever.

So yeah, good stuff.
