4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 10

If they did the 1997 cut for the scan, it could bode well for the OOT.  The question is what happened to the parts of the negative taken out when they "enhanced" the film?

I always viewed the original cut as a grand old dame who is aging gracefully and with dignity.  The Special Editions are like a woman who can't bear their age and gets a ton of bad plastic surgery to attempt to look young and just looks a mess.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

looks  like it is the special edition then. That's a shame. But which version? 2011?

Not sure. I think 1997 is most likely.

that's odd. It's weird that Disney would go to such a dated SE. Maybe someday there'll be a proper release of the OUT

Is anyone here going to take one for the team, and go see it?

Where were you in '77?

I agree completely, Frink - many misguided people have said this kind of thing about the BDs after all.

Got this response from them on facebook.  I also have since given them Jabba pictures to pick between to tell me which one is in this movie, that should narrow down what they're looking at.  I'll let you know if I get a response.

" I did get to see 20-25 min today . It is a stunning digital print and is the "Special Edition " version . Hans shoots second . We are using the term special addition to help with confusion but technically there is no such thing . "

If only this was real...

It's official, no one can keep track of what was in the OOT and what wasn't.

By "help with" they must mean "create."

I'm guessing they're saying there's no such thing as a special "addition."

Oh who am I kidding, I have no idea what they are saying.

That's why it's always funny to me when I hear some SE apologist make the argument that "only a small percentage of fans would buy it, most people are happy with the current release, etc."

People who say that should not be qualified as "SE apologist". I could be considered a SE apologist since I think 1997 SE did improve the films.

Yes, Han shooting first definitely improved Star Wars.  Han's character now makes so much more sense.

The new Jabba scene was breathtaking AND critical.

Thank god for the new Praxis effect explosions.

I was super confused by the original opening of ESB, luckily now we can see the full Wampa, so I get it now.

Luke's scream as he jumps off the Cloud City platform definitely improved his character.

Darth Vader landing in the Star Destroyer at the end of ESB fixes a glaring problem with the original, namely what was he doing at that point in the film?

Jedi Rocks is the single biggest improvement in any film ever.

...

No question, the 1997 SE definitely improves the flawed originals.

Wow, a full-on Frink rant, can't remember the last time I've seen one of those...  BTW, way to combo-break there, Beatleboy.

If they are sure that Han shoots second, this could be the '97 version untouched by 2004 and 2011 changes, because in the 2011 version Han shoots only two frames after Greedo, and is easily confused, whereas in the '97 version he shoots a full 8 frames after Greedo and is impossible to miss.

Excellent point!  Glad to finally have this solved.

But in all seriousness, got them to at least say they'd report back with which Jabba was in it, so if no other reliable reports of quality come in, we should know, at a minimum, if it was the '97.  And that being distributed to them in a new digital format and "looking and sounding stunning", should say a lot about what is or isn't going on with new scans.

Han shoots second? That's funny... I thought they only watched the first twenty minutes...

A couple of thoughts:

"Technically there is no such thing" is a disturbing statement.  That phrase essentially validates Lucas' point that the OOT is not Star Wars, that there is only one movie, the current 2011 one.

There is some logic in Disney opting to digitize the 1997 version.  It is the cheapest way for them to sorta claim they are releasing the original version.  In 1997 the original film was cleaned up and new prints made, also with some alterations.  They could simply 4K scan the 1997, leave out the Jabba scene, and claim it's the original.  With the exception of Han shooting second, most viewers wouldn't know the difference, and with Jabba gone the scan resolution would be excellent.  By contrast, making an equally-good-looking scan of the real OOT would be a lot more work.  Easy way out, and they'd still rake in a load of easy cash.

Disney claiming a slightly modified 1997 version as the original would drive me insane.  I really don't believe they'd do that on us.  It would be much more work, but even if it isn't THIS release that is the exact originals, atleast sometime within the next decade they will.

Author

I don't see what the point of them releasing the 1997 version as the original version. It wouldn't really win anybody over and it would just upset a lot of people

Author
Time

Oh don't worry about that, there isn't any chance they will.  The only question is, where do they go from the point of having a good scan of the '97 SE?  Create an acceptable OUT, or make a needless, yet superior to current release, 2011 SE remake?

Calling the 97 version the original would piss off even non-hardcore fans. The change every one knows is Han vs Greedo, and as was just mentioned, it is most obvious in 97 that Han does not shoot first.
