"End of the Century: The Story of The Ramones" (2003)

Gritty, dark and honest. A great documentary.

4 out of 4 late Ramones.

"Rock N' Roll High School" (1979)

Boring, un-funny, dumb, and pointless. The Ramones show up for 3 brief scenes miming their songs from their albums. They show up for the first time about 42 min. into the film. The Ramones are the only thing entertaining about this entire movie.  Don't expect them to act.

The Ramones in this film are Joey, Dee Dee, Johny, and Marky

Tommy was not working with the band at this time.

But...but...it has a giant mouse in it! You're related to Principal Togar aren't you? ;)

I think you were expecting too much from a Roger Corman production.

Shallow Ground (2004)

The story and acting's kind of uneven and the ending is ... odd ... but the plot is a rather original one, so I give it kudos for that.

6.9/10

The Golden Child (1986) - 8/10

The Magic Sword (1962)

I watched this movie through MST3K, so I suppose I've got to give two ratings for both the movie and the episode it's featured in.

Rating #1: While being rather lame with some crappy writing and acting, it isn't a horrible movie. Basil Rathbone certainly gives a good performance with what he has to work with.

5.5/10

Rating #2: I haven't seen many episodes of MST3K, but I've certainly gotten lots of enjoyment from those I have seen -- except this one. I guess the movie just wasn't bad enough to mock properly, because most of the humour just fell flat.

6/10

Geoul sokeuro AKA Into the Mirror (2003) - 7/10

The Straight Story (1999)

I put off seeing this film because I wasn't very interested in seeing a Lynch film that wasn't surrealistic and bizarre. Having finally watched it, I can't help but kick myself in the head for having deprived myself of what is without a doubt one of Lynch's best movies; I doubt even Frink would hate this one.

It's just a shame and a crime that Richard Farnsworth lost the Oscar to Kevin Spacey for his role in American Beauty; Spacey's performance was shit compared to Farnsworth's.

Funny, that was the first MST3K episode I ever saw back in 1993, and I laughed my butt off. I have the uncut movie on DVD as well.

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)

As Mr. Toad said, "What have I been missing?!?" Great duology.

Cinderella (1950)

I was SHOCKED at how much of this film turns out was ingrained in my brain as a child. It was just a constant barrage of "I remember that!" throughout the whole picture. Quite a bizarre experience.

I wonder if that moment in "Cinderella" was an inspiration for a similar scene in "Star Wars".

I felt the same way when I watched the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie a few years back. Of course, in my case it felt like a bad trip into a surrealist Hell rather than a stroll down Memory Lane.

The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958)

Well, now I know where a whole bunch of King's Quest V came from.

The roc and the dragon were clearly both inspirations for the two-headed dragon of Willow. Harryhausen creatures are so great.

Video Games: The Movie

Pretty Disappointing. There are a lot of interesting topics that they barely even touch on or ignore completely. The whole thing feels like a real missed opportunity. You wont really learn anything, it's all common knowledge stuff.

They talk to people like Randy Pitchford from gearbox - a company that has had massive succeses and massive failures in recent years. You'd expect somebody like that to have some interesting things to say but they don't cover any of it.

1 Ball - because it could have been so much more.

The Zero Theorem

I have two words for you - Terry Gilliam. That should give you an idea of what to expect..

There were some entertaining moments but overall it just feels too much like a rip-off of Brazil.

1 ball.

Bad Words

It seems that Jason Bateman is becoming a lot like Nicholas Cage. If you see his name attacted to something there is a chance that it will be really good but it's quite likely that it will be terrible.

The movie tries to hard to be funny but it doesn't feel like it goes anywhere. You will see the plot twist coming from a mile away.

and the orange and green colour grading will give you a migraine.

The Blues Brothers.

If you ever want a movie to literily pull you out of a suicidal depression this is the movie to watch.  It is so full of joy and yet it feels so real and everything about it is just so perfect.  The songs are perfect and will put a spring in your step. The cameos are great and will put a smile on your face. The action is amazing. The jokes are told with perfect timing and dilivery. Everything about this movie is just so special and perfect and there just isn't another movie that is anything like it.  One of the best musicals and stories about redemption ever made.  Oh and the bluray looks and more importantly sounds amazing.  These songs have never sounded better.

I was at an all time low today but I just finished watching this movie and I feel alive for the first time in a long time, now that is a great film.

10/10!

Avoid "Blues Brothers 2000" like the plague! It tends to place fans of the original into a suicidal depression.

The Crying Game (1992)

As I am and pretty much always have been a fan of Jaye Davidson's performance as Ra in Stargate, I figured it was about time I watched this movie to see his one and only other performance as an actor in a feature length film.

Suffice it to say, I already knew the story's plot twist, so I wasn't surprised in the least when it reared its head. What did surprise me, however, was to see goddamn Ralph Brown himself make an appearance in this film.

Ric Olie and Ra by DuracellEnergizer

As if that wasn't a bewildering surprise in-and-of itself, in one part of the movie he takes Davidson's character up to "her" apartment and it's strongly implied that they then had sex.

That's right -- Ric Olié fucked the sun god.

So to sum things up, I went in and got a surprise, just not the surprise that was intended by the filmmakers. To that I say: God bless you, you magnificent bastards.

Yeah it did with me when i first saw it a few weeks ago.  I had not seen the original in a few years so this was the perfect thing to pick my spirits up.

By the way if you want to see a shocked look on people's faces then watch this movie with a room full of people who know nothing about The Blues Brothers and just see what happens when you get to the scene where Carrie Fisher blows up the hotel just before John Candy raids Elwood's room. Jaws hit the floor last night.

Been trying hard to get into movies lately, thanks to my girlfriend watching them around me and me (of course) getting sucked into them.

The Secret Window

The girlfriend picked up a couple Stephen King books on vacation (Cell and The Long Walk, both of which she found predictable and drawn-out), her first. I've admittedly never read any King myself, but I have seen The Shining, which I enjoyed.

Interestingly, Secret Window is a lot like The Shining. Johnny Depp plays an author in a secluded place who is found by a strange man that accosts him for stealing "his story". Kingian stuff happens, I had the twist nailed (more or less) at around the halfway mark, and the whole thing reminded me a lot of Alan Wake, which isn't shocking, considering Sam Lake's influences. King's stuff definitely has a "feel" to it.

I'll give it five-and-a-half out of ten balls.

Mean Girls

The girlfriend told me I had to watch it with her, as it is one of her "quotable movies". I liked it. As a non-highschooler, and not-girl I felt like it captured the whole experience well, especially a young woman's perspective. Lots more bus violence than I expected, though.

Six out of ten balls.

The Count of Monte Christo

This was one of those movies that I remember coming out, and it fast turned into one of those movies that I couldn't believe I hadn't seen. There are lots of those, movies where I remember it and think "oh yeah! why didn't I ever see that?".

It was a good movie. Did a fine job with the characters. Well-casted, with the likes of Jesus and Dumbledore (which led to many hilarious riffs on my part). Very enjoyable. Made me want to read Dumas.

Seven out of ten balls.

I feel like there were more, but perhaps not. I'm actually getting back into movies, so yay.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.
