Definitely this new transfer looks much better than the 2011 BD. Finnaly some decent colors!

For example:

(Check the BD, these colors are missing/muted.)

Well the colours in the marked areas are distorted mainly because of the lower resolution of the upper video. It is not due to any technical improvement. They downgraded the scans to fit LD capacity for 1997 release.

Perhaps this would indicate they are working with the scans done for the purpose of 1997 SE.

I'm sorry. I didn't want to compare the new transfer with the 97 SE.
I just wanted to express how I'm glad that these colors are back.
Maybe this represents a better comparison:

So, possibilities:

A. Brand new scan of the ON, with all original optical effects recomposited. (the original plan for the SE; unlikely due to having to find every element again)
B. Scan of '97 SE, with '11 effects redone in 4k. (making a 4k version of the Blu-ray, perhaps for theatrical/3D viewing; likely due to the SE being "George's vision")
C. Scan of '97 SE, replacing the CG additions with original optical effects. (making a mostly-despecialized edition/original plan for the SE; possible because it's "good enough" for most purists)
D. Scan of '97 SE, to have a 4k version of the '97 SE. (neat for preservation of a lot of people's first theatrical experience of Star Wars; doubtful because '97 Jabba should not be seen by human eyes ever again)

What else do we have?

Very little hope left... :-/

How about a scan of the negative re-cut in '97 to the SE version (which seems to have been the source of the 2004 master) with even more new changes - like possibly for example an all new Jabba (the 2004 version is pretty bad too).

Is anyone going to that screening in Atlanta this Friday? That could answer a lot of questions, if it is indeed a new DCP, it would make a lot of sense for it to be this new master.

All sold out. Besides, six hours is quite a drive for the SE. I'm sure we can find someone who has tickets who is obsessive enough to recognize what went into its making.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

We need to find someone BEFORE they go so they're looking for differences......

Ah, sorry. I was under the mistaken impression that you live close by.

I'm sure someone at the screening will recognize something and write into CHUD or AICN or some other website and they'll post it sometime over the weekend.

Six hours away is very close by for a screening of the original, but far, far away for a screening of the SE ;)

Okay, so putting aside speculation on what these Reliant scans are for, are you saying that any restoration for a SW blu-ray would require recompositing the original elements?  Which you're saying is "unlikely"?

(Also, put aside the perhaps spurious claims that Georgie liquidated the ON when he puked all over them for the notorious "special-editiation".  Let's say the ON does exist.)

Would the choices then be an IP (with optical effects on there) or an "unlikely" re-compositing?  Is there no "master" of sorts of the original which would not require re-compositing to be restored?

Whatever it is, it looks good. My guess is it was supposed to be for 3D usage.

But wait, didn't TPM 3D just use the 2011 version?

Maybe this was a 4K restoration that was scaled down for the Blu-ray release (and then shat on a bit).

Nothing would make me happier than seeing this site, and all our restorations shut down and invalidated overnight because somebody finally did it right, from the very best of materials.

Until then, however...

If you're referring to the existing blu-ray, no, that wouldn't be the situation here. That release used the 2004 Lowry masters, with a few additional tweaks.

TPM, meanwhile, was two birds with one stone. They went back to ILM's film-out tapes, which were still readable after more than a decade, and reconstructed the movie digitally. This gave them not only a digital master that was even closer to the true original negatives (and ideal for the blu-ray transfer), but also an excellent starting point for the 3D conversion.

From the appearance of the lightsabers and their associated flashes, I think this is still essentially the 2004 master, but a 'non-screwed-up' version of it: what the scan looked like before its color and contrast were later ruined.  It could have been upscaled to higher resolution to do additional work more recently.

Or, it could be a new scan initially made for 3D re-release, with the '04 changes put back into it.  Either way, the quality will surely be better than anything currently available, so if it gets a Bluray release, it will make a good source for improved Despecialized Editions later on (in combination with Team -1 scans of the original shots).  I'm not convinced there's really more to be excited about than that, though I suppose there's a vague possibility of them making a branching version that follows the original edit by taking out the most obvious changes.

Hmm . . .

It says that it's just another SE print from 97. Considering a theater here in NYC had the exact same showing just a couple of weeks ago, I'm going to assume it's probably the same print that's making the rounds.

Scan of '97 SE and they don't bother to add the '04 and '11 changes.

I'd still rather watch the 97 SE than the 2004 and 2011 versions

Same here. No Christensen + Vader not saying "no" goes a long way.
