Yeah, I guess the consistency isn't 100% but I'd say it's good enough now.

Oh, BTW, I got a green light from Team Negative 1 to say that the 35mm scans come from them. So, thanks Team Negative 1 - without you, the quality of this edit would be much lower, because those shots were the most obvious despecializations in there :-)

 Aaah.

Not only does this ruin my poita theory, but it ruins the old theories that Ream -1 doesn't really have any prints, they're making it all up.

Excellent!

But wasn't that nonsense disproven when Harmy used their Mos Eisley sequence in Star Wars?

Unless people were suggesting that they had 35mm copies of the first film and were faking the rest? Also, can you imagine the amount of work they would have to put into adding digital damage to the blu-rays for all their previews? Hah. Sorry for off topic (though it's slightly on topic in that Harmy makes great early use of -1's material).

Yeah, Harmy, I looked at it fresh just now, and I'd say the consistency is quite acceptable, and having the distinct blue blade makes the scene so much cooler (lightsabers kick butt, there's no getting around that).  So, what method did you go with to get that saber color back?

Oh yeah. I forgot about that. Never mind!

Thanks for the reference. We are in the credits, so it makes sense to announce it.

We have also posted many clips of the duel, and the Carbon chamber scene, including longer composite ones for comparison with the bluray and dvd versions.

Yeah, there was never any doubt in my mind that Team Negative 1 had real prints - from the very first clip it was clear that they do. What was unclear until later, when they finally posted some HQ clips, was whether they have the technology to do a decent transfer of those prints - and as it turns out, they do - some of these shots I received have better detail than the BD - as discussed here.

@yoda-sama: I used two different methods - in the first two shots after Luke cuts himself free, I overlayed the 97SE over the footage and set its blending mode to color, thus giving the whole shot the colors of the 97SE. In the last shot, which looked kind of weird with very washed-out skintones in the 97SE, I rotoscoped the saber.

Harmy, sorry to hear they are screwing you on the motherboard. I just sent you a donation to put toward the purchase of a new motherboard. Thanks again for all your hard work.

How can I send a donation ? I'd like to do it, even if it's not much.

First of all, props to all the hard work you've put into these releases. I appreciate it.

As far as color correcting goes,

1) The 97SE takes on a light purple tint.

2) The workprint seems more beige.

3) Blu-ray takes on a light blue tint.

4) The "New Colors" seems like an effort to combine all of the tints together.

Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, but overall I think it's the best you can do short of painstakingly color correcting every single shot.

I did painstakingly color correct every single shot. At least in this sequence I did.

Again with orange: I finally got around to checking against the DVD, and I still think the orange uniforms in the WP look yellow and washed out, while the DVD ones look more correct to me, as does Leia's hair.

I don't know that this will show up on the web with the colors intact, but here goes:

Is anyone feeling me, here?

But I will also add that the WP Hoth blue planet glow indeed looks correct next to the DVD, and I also liked the WP Hoth snow better than the "new colors" one.

To me, the color of the uniforms looks far better in the WP in that comparison.

In this shot i think the dvd colors look washed out, the wp looks better to me.

As for the new hoth colors i was actually happy with the previous colors. The new version i'm thinking similar to Revgen, sometimes looks better to me and sometimes looks a little off compared to the previous wp, but i am still happy with it, it looks far better than the gout and the weird blu-ray colors.

Like you mentioned before Harmy, get someone else to do the color correction, and they can deal with all our comments about the colors ;)

I agree with Harmy.  Leia's hair and face look to red in the DVD and look more correct in the WP.

Agreed that the WP looks far better than the DVD to me.

That DVD shot of the uniforms looks ridiculous.

As for the new 'lost in the snow' scene, I think he pretty much nailed it this time.  The workprint was too washed out and dulled down, since as he said before, the 2004 transfer is monochromatic and smears a huge amount of blue over everything, so when you desaturate that part of the image, the whole thing becomes flat.  This time, it can plainly be seen that the colour and contrast of the characters has had much more life breathed into it, allowing them to stand out against the background.  It now looks more 'real', if that makes sense; and the new colours form an ideal compromise between the 1993 and 1997 versions.  I heartily approve!

Harmy, I'm curious as to how you managed to deal with the characters and backgrounds separately, so they didn't affect each other.  How was this accomplished?

Author

The characters are mostly darker than the background, so I made a curve, which added red to just those brightness levels - it had to be tweaked shot-by-shot and in some shots, it was more successful than in others but I think generally, it worked pretty well.

Oh, no, they are just in the order in which the donations came. I will probably try to put them into alphabetic order. Anyone know how to do this easily? I have them as a simple .txt file.

Copy them into a spreadsheet program, sort A-Z. Should work. If you don't want to do it, just PM them to me.

Ridiculous in what way? The WP is way more yellow, can we all at least agree on that?  The DVD is more red, for sure.

So so far, everyone that responded thinks the orange uniforms look correct. Got it.

What about Leia's hair? It's light brown/veering into red during this whole scene, but not during the rest of the film. I understand that people have different preferences, but I have a hard time believing I'm the only one that sees this.

I sorted them for him real quick and sent them back.  No worries.  He only has to add any new ones at this point.  Or, if a lot more donations roll in for him (cough cough) I can re-sort them later.  :)

Oh, no no no. I'm putting a cap on the donations! I nearly have the money to cover the cost of the new mobo now and there isn't anything else I need for this project at the moment! Plus I need to finalize the credits.
