Doesn't look like lightning to me. Just looks silly.

Still -- in-universe, in the book itself -- it's lightning, not laser bolts.

Right on. There's really nothing wrong with it. It's just that, as a kid, it didn't look like Star Wars to me. And I remember next to nothing about the story, except that, like the cover, it didn't feel Star Wars.
That was 20 years ago though.

The Thrawn trilogy is amazing—easily the best by far of any Star Wars books that have ever been written.  I too had difficulty with them when I was young, but when I tried again at a more mature age, I wondered why I'd ever passed them over before.  Not only are the story and quality of writing superb, they reference only the original films and do not have to play along with anything else in terms of continuity.  I will always consider them to be the true sequel trilogy (Episodes 7, 8, and 9, if you like), because along with the older movies, they are really the only part of the story that actually matters.

As for what I'm indifferent to in the EU . . . well, nearly everything else, I guess.

Maybe I'll give it another shot. I've been trying to dig out my old copy, but I must have lost it when I got rid of my Star Wars stuff. I thought I had it packed in with my other books, but it looks like it went out with the SW collection. I can probably track down a used copy somewhere..

They are certainly better than all the novels that came later but they are still fanfiction even if officially licensed and published fanfiction.

I mean its like good fanfic versus rotten fanfic that is just printed solely to make money.

Zahn only had the first 3 films to work from in their original forms except for star wars which had been retitled episode IV a new hope.

He had the VHS tapes that came out in the 1980's to work from.  Probably in full screen.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

The only things that I really had a problem with with the Thrawn Trilogy is Zahn's explanation for how Vader got his mechanical hand and his explanation behind Luke's vision in the cave on Dagobah. Beyond that, though, I thought it was a wonderful continuation of the Star Wars Saga (the real saga, that is, not the phoney-baloney revisionist joke cooked up by Lucas/Lucasfilm).

After watching most of the episodes, I have to mention the Droids cartoon series now. While there are a number of interesting characters and concepts scattered throughout the show, the execution is just so meh.

About 80-90% of the EU is pointless dreck.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

I'm mainly indifferent about the Prequel Trilogy EU, save for a few things like the Darth Plagueis novel.

Screw lightsabers, I’ll stick with regular swords. At least they won’t blow up in my face like this franchise has.
