How do you figure out original colors, with prints faded so much?

You have two options:

1. Grade to a known reference

2. Grade so that it "looks good" to you

A combination of (1) and (2) is probably best when a truly accurate reference (such as an IB Technicolor print) doesn't exist.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

What references does Empire have? LPP stills maybe?

There's a Super8 print (not Derann) with pretty good color. The 1985 CAV P&S LD release is pretty good as well.

Neither of these are truly "accurate" of course, but they're most likely better than many other sources.

We've got plenty of sources, and with the color correction specialist, they know how to adjust the colors to approximate the originals.

We have laserdiscs, VHS's, and bootlegs of the film versions.

See this thread for more samples.

There are many samples of them there. Some are listed

in post 4 of this thread:

Here is a sample glue frame from ESB. Not sure if it is in all the versions.

The original 1080p frame:

There is no thread for these, like there are for Star Wars:

Here's a sample of about 1min:40sec of the Fuji version of ESB from Reel 1.

You can see quite a bit of damage on it.

There is partial color correction done on it.

See what you think, in comparison to the colors from the other versions out there.

We will be posting some more samples from the Fuji versions and more comparisons shortly. Please check back later for the links.

Here is another 1080p sample from the very end of the movie. Just to change things up. Right before the credits.

Again, partial color correction has been done to it.

Note : There is quite a bit of damage on the far right hand side of the frame.

Still, it looks far better than most anything available in the detail area.

 Nice.

Even if it's only been partially corrected, to me, the clip feels more cinematic than the official blurays.

Keep 'em coming.

I just saw this and naturally thought of you guys.

Yes, we've heard of it, and looked into it.

We have an alternate solution that's just as capable though.

It's not the issue of the scanning anymore. We have more sources to go through, and cleaning up the frames which is the time consuming part.

Do any of your prints have a BBFC certificate at the start? I'd love to see a grab of that, no matter how scuzzy!

(I'm starting work on reconstructing the theatrical opening - now where's Black Angel?)

I hope that company put more work into their product than they did into their copy writing:

Ultra HD is incredible quality and there are millions of hours of Ultra HD content that’s been generated over the last 100 years locked up in 35mm film that is stored in vaults worldwide! The new Cintel scanner will scan negative and positive 35mm film into amazing quality Ultra HD and you can unlock the extra resolution from 35mm film that no one has been able to see until now!

Yecch.

There is something that i have been meaning to ask, but it seems you don't have a thread specifically for ROTJ, so i will ask here.

There is a section on ROTJ that is out of focus on the HDTV & Blu-Ray versions. As you have a print of ROTJ i'm hoping you can check this section and post some screenshots that can settle an ongoing argument. From the point of the shuttle reaching Endor and giving the code right up until the beginning of the speeder bike chase ther difference is sharpness is terrible. there seems to be some sort of horizontal smearing. The worse shot that really shows this problem off is the shot below. If you could just post a hi-res screengrab off your scan of this one shot then it would prove one way or another iif there was a huge problem with the official ROTJ transfer

and here is a comparison between 2 shots inside the shuttle of Han that also shows the difference between two sections of the film

It looks like we will have an answer to this question in a week or two.

Adywan, as soon as we can get those clips/pictures to you we will. There are still a few more steps to go with them.

The screenshots wouldn't need to be from your finished version to show if the problems are with the official transfer or with the film itself. Screenshots from your raw untouched scan would easily show if the same problem exists on the theatrical prints. Plus posting these screenshots from your raw scan would also prove to those that are saying that you don''t even have the prints that you actually do

Thanks

We will post something as soon as we have some results.

It's difficult to tell how good the quality is; I see a lot of compression artifacts in the 2 videos.

Could they be reuploaded at with better compression?

We should write a script to post this reply every time they post a video

I don't want to pile on, but this is getting a little too ridiculous. Is there a reason you guys can't upload to a higher quality video streaming site like Vimeo? Or do what Harmy does and put up chunks of uncompressed video for download?

I imagine you guys are doing a bang-up job restoring this, and you've proven this before with the Mos Eisley bits for Star Wars Despecialized, but the current quality you're showing us is comparable to a Twitch stream.
