I still think the idea that he wasn't exactly leader material as a kid could have been put forward without making him such a pain in the ass.

I hate the slow portentous monologues, I hate the clunky humour, I hate the way it drags on forever, I hate the fact it screws up one of the most poetic endings of any genre film (the storm coming in at the end of the first film is still Cameron's finest bit of work). Arnie was perfectly cast as the dead-pan soulless robot but as the Roger Mooreism spouting good guy he is an embarrassment.

What the hell is happening with the ending?

Either she creates a paradox or she returns to being boring nobody Sarah Connor without her ontological offspring.

That thumb going up is one the most groan worthy, mood shattering lumps of cheese in the history of cinema. It's as cheesy as a lump of cheese that fell into a bucket of cheese and got cheesed off because it got a cheese coating.

The third one is almost as cheesy ("talk to the hand", inflatable boobs etc) but at least restores the pessimism.

I re-watched the first two X-Men movies last night and boy the first one is awful.

The second one was good though.

In that case what was the effort for?

If it's just branching divergent universes they might as well have let Skydrive take over because in another universe they lost.

Awake (2007) - 8/10

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) - 8.5/10

Titus (1999) - 8/10

Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000)

I don't usually like slashers, but there are three aspects about this one that endeared it to me:

1. The filmmaking aspect of the plot

2. The fact that it didn't take itself too seriously, especially towards the end

3. That a character said "Fuck George Lucas"

6.5/10

Lake Mungo (2008).

In some ways a superior entry into the found footage genre.

It's made in a faux documentary style so the found footage is mixed with positioned camera footage of the 'interviews' inter-cut with still images.

This makes the piece feel less contrived than most of it's cousins as it dispenses with the need for the characters to carry a camera with them at all times.

What starts off as essentially a ghost story gains a mild Twin Peaks style complication to it's plot some way in but it stays at a very slow and deliberate pace which might bore some viewers. It kept my attention going but it never got anything more than sort of interesting.

It could really have done with more work.

The documentary maker and his crew are barely featured at all (you would be forgiven for forgetting they are even mentioned). If it had a Jon Ronson type character prompting some of the characters and driving the narrative and if a couple of the characters had been taken to book for what they did it would have made a very good film indeed.

As it is 2 balls.

^Though I've pretty much sworn modern Hollywood completely off, I am looking forward to seeing the new Godzilla reboot. I only hope it doesn't prove to be a complete letdown.

I've seen it and I think it stays true to the original (serious) Toho movies.

X-Men 3 is nowhere near as bad as the rap it gets.

I say its better than but close to the first one but nowhere near as good as the second one.

it has awful moments but so does the first one.

2 balls.

In the cinema:

Godzilla (2014)

meh.

Noah (2014)

I rather liked it.

On home video (or whatever it's called by the bright young things nowadays):

All the Wes Anderson movies (in preparation to seeing Grand Budapest hotel) I love his films.

Blood for Dracula (1974)

Campy, and a lot of fun.

Bamboozled (2000)

Very thought provoking, if a little hamfisted (especially towards the ending, where it takes a turn for the ridiculous)

A Good Year (2006)

Watched this with my girlfriend. We both loved it.

A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999)

Strangely enough, I've never seen nor read A Midsummer Night's Dream so it was nice to see a Shakespeare play with fresh eyes. I liked it a lot (though I do feel bad for Bottom at the end)

Somewhere in Time (1980)

Charming and utterly heartbreaking. There are goofy moments but the rest of the love story makes up for it. John Barry's score is absolutely gorgeous.

Singin in the Rain (1952)

A classic. What else can be said about it?

I'm Still Here (2010)

Joaquin Phoenix pretends to be Andy Kaufman, falls flat on his ass. UGH.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

Wow. Fox finally got their crap together. This movie was exactly what this franchise needed. I'm actually looking forward to the next one.

Please tell me they finally made the focus of the story someone other then Wolverine,if they did that I would go see it in theaters.  I am just burnt out on all things Wolverine. It's the same with Batman in the DC universe. I don't hate either of them but they have been so over used I just don't care about them any more. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone else, but that is just how I feel right now.

Oh and the last movie I saw was Godzilla. I don't want to give away any spoilers so I will just say it was amazing and the fact that you almost always see him from the POV of a human at street level means you never lose your sense of awe or fear when he is on screen.

The Monuments Men

Forgettable-groan inducing-never ending-Ocean's 11 wannabe in WWII-toneless-undefined-and ultimately unaffecting piece of JUNK. Even the dull Valkyrie was better than this.

1/4 dull balls

The Mark of Zorro-(1920)

Magic. Essentially watching the superhero and swashbuckler film genres being birthed.

Ultimate balls. 4/4 Essential viewing.

Don Q Son of Zorro (1925)

Larger scale but not as effective as the original.

3.5/4

Cruising

A incoherent mess. A waste of so much talent.

2/4 Pacino looking out of place balls.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Interesting multi-aspect ratio. The film itself...the usual indescribable Anderson farce.

3/4 incomprehensible balls.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence

Arguably the best film John Ford ever made. Bar none John Wayne's best role, and his byplay with Stewart is worth the price of admission alone. Gorgeously bleak B&W and one of the great American parables.

4/4 Essential.

The Long Good Friday

Even Better the second time. This is a relentless, inventive, groundbreaking little movie that deserves to be better known. A gritty classic with one of the signature British characters. A shame Bob Hoskins is no longer with us. This is one of those performances for the ages.

4/4 Essential.

VADER!? WHERE THE HELL IS MY MOCHA LATTE? -Palpy on a very bad day.

Both characters were better when they had some human weaknesses and limitations. Turning them into unbeatable, unkillable demigods has made them both incredibly boring.

RUBBER (2010)

I almost caught this in theaters when it originally released. Finally saw it with a few friends on Netflix a few nights ago. Delightfully absurd film. I'd love to hear everyone's reaction to it here. =P

Thank you!  With everyone going on about how awesome and unbeatable they are i thought I was alone in finding them boring and I used to love these characters!  The fact that they are going to have Batman beat the snot out of Superman in the next movie is not going to help. How is there any dramatic tension in watching a character who never makes mistakes(because he is just that awesome)and can beat up Superman without breaking a sweat?  Give them some human failings or show that they are men who have to struggle to keep up with the more powerful superheros in their universes. This whole "They are popular so they are unstopable" stuff is just boring.  Oh and Fox,how about giving us a movie that has Xmen other then Wolverine in it?! You do know that Xmen is the name of a team who work together to solve problems and it isn't just the name of one guy who does everything right?

I am sorry but both the Xmen movies and the DC movie universe have been killed by the movies focusing on these two characters. Again I don't hate the characters but there are other characters who should get some screen time and these ones have been made boring.
