Wow. The computer was brand new, wasn't it?
I hate when that happens... I've been buying back up drives like crazy lately to make sure everything is protected. What a royal pain in the arse.

Unfortunately these things do happen, and I can sympathise totally, as it has happened to me before, not long after building a new PC. Really sucks. :-/
Yeah, building your own PC is usually the best way to go, but it's always nerve-wracking whenever anything goes wrong since there's so many things that can go wrong. I left a new PC I built mostly untouched for months because it kept having random problems.
Oh what!? :( Well that's a downer right there, and the rig was brand new!
Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.
Well, mine was running perfectly until I put in the additional RAM and then it just died completely - it doesn't even beep. I tried every trick in the book but it's just dead. I really hope it's just the motherboard. I'm hoping I will be able to get a new board through warranty but these things can take weeks.
I ordered a thingy to connect internal HDDs through USB, which should arrive today, so that I can try out the HDDs on my laptop and find out if all the data is intact, which is the most important thing.

Ah, a hard drive enclosure. I've had to use them before. Probably would be wise to just purchase an external drive to keep everything on, even if it's just for backing things up that you have on your internal drive once a week. Drives are so cheap these days.
Better yet, I'm not sure what your main drive is, but if you don't have an SSD in there, I would *highly* recommend it...especially for rendering and working with video. Then you could use whatever regular platter drive(s) you currently have for backups in your new enclosure.

Awesome news! I got it to work! I tried restoring BIOS settings by removing the battery yesterday and it didn't work but then I left the battery out all night and now it works, so it was a BIOS issue, it seems.
Only it still doesn't work with the new RAM, so my friend is still coming tomorrow and we'll be trying to figure it out, maybe a BIOS update will help, but it's definitely not dead! Hurray!
Great news! I cringed for you when I heard about it. My cobble-job of prequel editing was frustrating enough; I cannot fathom the aggravation you must feel at times conducting this massive project.
Have fun storming the castle!
Other than that BIOS battery trick, I would have said to make sure to drain whatever capacitance was left in the mobo by unplugging the power then depressing the power switch for a few seconds. I've fixed a few odd issues that way (some of which BIOS updates did address what caused the problems).
As for the RAM not working, is it exactly the same as the first set? If not, what are the differences (speed, timings, size, brand, etc.)? Also, have you tried putting in JUST the new RAM, to see if it is a conflict between the mix of old and new RAM (rather than an incompatibility between the new RAM and your mobo, or just bad RAM).
If you can get it to boot in any way with the new RAM, you can boot off of a Linux Live CD (such as my preference, Lubuntu) and test your RAM with memtest (it is in the CD's boot menu, if you have UEFI disabled). Once that runs for a while, it should let you know if it finds any errors, which would indicate bad RAM.
Oh fantastic! Thank God for everything!

Listen, Harmy. I don't want excuses, and I don't want updates on your computer or your life. I simply want releases, and fast.
Just kidding! I really just wanted to say how much I appreciate what you've done so far, and the work you continue to do. It's fantastic that I can sit down with my kids and watch the unbutchered version of Star Wars in HD.
We've sure come a *long* way since Cowclops v2!

That's good news. There's nothing more painful than doing exactly the same work once again.

That was the very first thing I tried ;-)

Yeah, I'm going to try that tomorrow. But the new RAMs should be exactly the same as the old ones - I even used the same link to order them. But I'm hoping a BIOS update will take care of it - my friends said he was reading up on it and it seems with older BIOS versions, this mobo had some trouble having all the RAM slots filled, so hopefully they fixed the issue in the upgrades.
EDIT: I just looked it up and it seems this is a problem typical for this mobo:

The thread is from almost a year ago, so I'm kinda hoping that they have since released an update taking care of it.

The more recent posts are from last month, and it seems like people are getting it to work with a lot of work involved.
That is one thread of frustrated people, though.
Harmy, if you ever need to reset your BIOS settings in the future, there should be a pair of jumper pins on your motherboard labeled "CLR_CMOS". Putting a jumper on those two pins or simultaneously touching the two pins for a few seconds with a metal object should reset your BIOS settings. The manual for your motherboard (available online from the manufacturer if you don't have the copy that came with the board) should show you where the jumper location is.
Did that, didn't work.
Yeah, some motherboards are fickle like that with certain types of ram because of things like voltages and timings, although in your case it does seem like an update should address your ram/motherboard problem, *fingers crossed*
Worst case scenario, I'll do some research and get a different mobo in the future. But I really hope it won't be necessary.
I would of course try to return this one, because if it can't take four sticks of RAM, it clearly doesn't work as it should.

That's what *I* would do if your friend can't fix it this weekend.

Well, the mobo is obviously faulty, so they shouldn't make any problems.

Good luck man!! I hate this kind of crap! I bricked a motherboard by flashing the BIOS to update it. I feel your pain.

Cowclops.... Now that is a name I've not heard in a long time
EDIT : I will ask in "Technical Discussions"
Any new word yet?
