Damn those last few screenshots make me so mad!

It isn't just the cropping, it's the messing with Kershner's perfectly composed shots. When there is a shot of Lando mucking about with some Falcon panels, why would you crop out half the panels?

(ESB:R recolouring looks gorgeous btw)

I completely agree - every frame of this film is masterful composition. Breaking the 4th wall? I completely disagree - it's the inside border of the cockpit (?!), and with the composition intact, it in fact feels more cramped than the cropped shot, because uncropped we can better see the round shape of the cockpit. Oh, and it should go without saying that this is MY OPINION...

If Lucas was going to nitpick the framing of shots 17 years later, maybe he shouldn't have hired a director and just done it himself to begin with. That's disrespectful to Kershner's original vision of the film HE directed.

Yes, we're discussing each other's opinions. I hope you don't think "opinion" means we can't criticize it.

Also I agree.

Ray,

it is my understanding that the crushed blacks are unfixable using the blue ray as the source. See hamy's making the despecialized Star Wars Youtube to see why. The detail in the black areas is just gone. ANH:R suffers the same problem.

however as ady has shown with the restored cockpit shots, he has access to a HD film scan of ESB. Therefore from that source the information lost in the crushed blacks is still present. A lot of work to restore.... But it could theoretically be done.

You say that as if it's a bad thing. If the world lived by the Sith Code the world would be an exponentially better place.

Harmy's editions are why I'm askin'. The detail restored in his SW:DE is absolutely amazing. I'd love to see the same done to the Revisited projects if possible. In fact, it's probably what I'd be most excited about.
But, if it's not doable, it's not.

Vader doesn't have eyebrows in Star Wars and Harmy hasn't restored the crushed blacks in the other two films, so that's not what I'm talking about.
Also, Harmy's first efforts at repairing Anikin's eyebrows in his edition of ROTJ is very much appreciated.

I'm not saying to really critique him, but it was more of a joke hence the "lol"

Your post seemed very dismissive and mocking of Harmy's efforts. I worship his work and won't have it slandered.

Well let me dismiss these allegations here and now; Harmy's edits or the OT are the kitty's titties.

I do hope Ady will be as OCD when it comes to making the Executor bridge in ROTJ look as good as the one in ESB (what is it with 80's sequels and buggering up hand-me-down sets?).

Well, that's the real trick, isn't it. ;) But that bridge is going to be almost impossible to get it to match the better ESB one, thanks mainly to this guy stuck down the bottom, here....

This will be extremely tough, but it might be a matter of cutting out some of the actors (such as the one walking on the plank) and using the bridge shots in EMPIRE (while creating new mattes for outside the bridge windows). I know that is definitely easier said than done, but it might be an easier option than trying to ply away things in the original shot(s).

In fact, I think it would be interesting to go back and watch JEDI with full frame TVs in mind. To judge the above shot on set design, it doesn't make any sense - not only is the scanner guy sitting on the edge of the gangplank, but the wall to the bridge entrance is located 5 to 10 feet from where it should be. BUT, if you see this as framed for a 4:3 TV set, it makes perfect sense. I wonder if there other scenes that are designed for (the then current) 4:3 TV frame if you were to crop the 2.35:1 image down.

Could there be a way of possibly taking a shot of the ESB bridge while omitting actors here and there while possibly including extras. Although using Admiral Piett and the officers he's interacting with, that's the big challenge methinks. At least the background looking out into the field of battle could be easily adjusted.
