Is the DVD transfer in the Alice In Wonderlan 2011 Blu  Ray combo any good? I know that it's not the same trasnfer as the Blu Ray disc, i'm just wondering if it's better than the Gold collection or Masterpiece transfers.

It's a transfer from the Lowry's restoration in 2004.  It was also re-released in 2010.  If you're a purist you  may not want it, but it is quite good and better than the 2011 BD.

You'll get the same transfer and a better selection of extras if you get an older DVD instead.

@ALL - Rumor has it Disney will be releasing a double dip/Special Edition of Frozen come the holiday season.  It should include more bonus features and a 3D version (which the UK already has).  Plan your purchases accordingly.

While reviews of the current BD are good, the aspect ratio is NOT theatrical, measuring 2.24:1 instead of 2.39:1.  Dunno why.

Edit: Also (unempirically), the DVD looks intentionally soft.  Could be yet another dirty trick to forcing people into buying BDs, could be to save bitrate, could be my eyes.

Purist recommendation: 1995 Laserdisc may be the best.  The 1982 Laserdisc source print was beat up, but is reported to have very accurate colors.

From where did you hear that the 1982 LD release has very accurate colors?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

What's the source for the censored scenes from Fantasia on YouTube, etc.?

I don't know if any YouTube video is a "new restoration" or an update of this first one I came across ..

It looks like there are a number of sources for pre-1969/censored Disney's Fantasia footage:

* an original 16mm print of the 1958 Disneyland TV show entitled Magic And Music, which aired The Pastoral sequence of Fantasia, along with 2 other musical Disney cartoons
http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Magic_and_Music

* an original 16mm print of the 1974 "educational short" of edited segments from that same Disneyland TV show (I don't know if The Pastoral sequence is here complete)
http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Magic_and_Music_%28short%29

* a taping (probably now a transferred-from-tape DVD) of a 1980's The Disney Channel rebroadcast of that same TV episode
http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Disneyland_%28TV_series%29

But that's not the important part! Even Sunflower is miffed ..
.. that she gets all the glory of being a racially-discriminated-against centaurette by Corporate Disney political-correctness liberalism, while Otika gets quietly wiped from existence with none being the wiser!

WHERE IS OTIKA'S FIVE MINUTES OF FAME? Well, glad you asked ..

Shame. I hope an old 35mm copy of the film (struck before the 1960s) turns out on ebay (with the Pastoral intact) or somewhere else so we can get it, finaly.

That's a really good question... um, huh.

I think it was a forum discussion at DVDizzy: http://www.dvdizzy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21174

The problem is the comparison screenshots have oddly gone black and white so there is no proof besides people's opinion at the time they were posted.

An interesting discussion about the colors of Dumbo (at least in recent releases) can be found here: http://colorfulanimationexpressions.blogspot.com/2010/05/dumbo-for-our-times.html

I probably posted that link before.

Just picked up some LDs today at Savers. Toy Story, Lion King, Fantasia, and Aladdin. Save for Aladdin, all of these were the Deluxe sets. Everything is virtually immaculate, with the Former two having the shrink Wrap still on!

I know the OP still mentions wanting a Lion King LD preservation done. Would anyone be up for transferring some of these? I'm down for shipping them to someone in the Continental USA. I would, but I don't own a LD player and it would probably be cheaper to send them to someone rather than me buying one right now.

Yikes.  According to TheDigitalBits:

And here’s something Rumor Mill worthy... the Disney Wiki has listed street dates for upcoming Disney Diamond Edition Blu-ray animated titles, including Sleeping Beauty (10/2), 101 Dalmatians (2/3/15), Aladdin (10/6/15), and Pinocchio (2/2/16). The very same Wiki has also listed the following additional BD releases for this year: Muppets Most Wanted (June), Hercules (6/10), Tarzan (6/10), A Goofy Movie & An Extremely Goofy Movie (2-Movie Collection – 6/24), Mickey, Donald and Goofy: The Three Musketeers (Summer), The Black Cauldron: Special Edition (8/19), Bears (8/26), Fun and Fancy Free (9/30), The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (9/30), Saludos Amigos & The Three Caballeros (2-Movie Collection – 12/2), Make Mine Music & Melody Time (2-Movie Collection – 12/2), and Planes: Fire & Rescue (12/9). Salt this information appropriately, but still... these dates make sense. Thanks to Bits reader Bill M. for the heads-up.

About time The Black Cauldron was announced. Hope they don't screw it up.

Since the second list isn't 'Diamond' I assume they're probably going to just use best available prints.  At least we can hope.

If they would finally include the deleted Cauldron Born footage as a an extra, I'd be a very happy camper. ;)

Were the Aladdin DTV's actually finished up on film? If they were edited on SD video, (as were the Disney Afternoon shows) that would be the stumbling block for a Blu Ray release.

At least "King of Thieves" was definitely finished on film, as there's a (sadly cropped to 16:9) 1080-HDTV-version of it that looks pretty good. Or I was fooled by a very well made upscale...

It seems to be due to laziness. The 2k master is 2048x858 (2.39) and instead of doing a proper rescale, they've cropped the edges off to make it 1920x858 (2.24).

*headdesk*

Edit: Just tried the iTunes download and it's in the wrong aspect too.

I'm a caveman and therefore have no idea what you're all talking about when the conversation gets technical. However, I do regret the look of film has been scrubbed away from these works, and that tweaking with colors and aspect ratios has become routine.

It's a pity to see the major studios either don't bother with their older titles, or feel they have to be updated and "improved" upon. I wish they had more respect for their heritage and product. Many people all over the internet seem to care.

It makes me wonder if some kind of partnership couldn't be struck. We're all still learning about the possibilities of the internet, and perhaps in a couple of decades, we'll be able to get exactly what we want ( like a General Audiences' 'Fantasia'" or the unrated version, or choose between  the open matte "Beauty and the Beast" or the widescreen one... ).

   Wishful thinking?

As long as the master is the same for the DCP, that is what they always do with every movie. The ones in the "correct" 2.39 AR on the BD are simply further cropped (vertically) down to 1920*806, so we end up losing 12% of the picture. Check out the BD of Raiders of the lost ark. Nice crap, huh?

Behodar: Have you seen screenshot comparisons that can prove the edges are cropped and not that the matte was opened at the top/bottom?

If so it will be noted in the guide.
