Star Wars Prequels 35mm 4K Filmized Editions by Emanswfan (a WIP) — Page 15

I think this is the best clip you've posted so far. I didn't notice any aberrations consciously, but it did feel like a classic film. I like the vibe I get from the window in Palpatine's office.

The only thing I'd question in this clip was Yoda's color. He seems desaturated, though perhaps that's okay. At this point I'm still hoping I can make use of this regraded version in a v2 of my prequel edits once it's ready. I'm gonna hang onto all my project files in the hopes of it.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Yes, Yoda's color has been bothering me a lot.  I like most other colors, especially the skintones (except mace windu is lacking that richness in his skin older films usually have with african-american people.)  I am just having a bit of trouble trying to make Yoda look properly saturated, I'll continue to look into it.

I've done hours of work trying to get Yoda to look right on single frames. The CGI would have to be replaced to look like ESB Yoda. I don't get why they didn't just dig out the old puppet. It would've been a treat for fans.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

In the Making of Jedi discussion, I seem to remember that Rinzler saw the original Yoda puppet, and it was terribly rotted. That probably wouldn't have been a treat to see, and I can understand why they recreated the puppet for Episode 1. Why they made him look different however...

Working on miniature effects.  Slowly but surely getting the opening shot fully converted to 3D.  It'll be a faster process, when I've gotten all the kinks out of the process.  Plus, this shot is the longest.

Whoa, do you have a goal of converting the whole film into 3D??

Most of the three movies, just so I have the necessary depth maps for shots that need to look more miniature.

Thanks for the update. I was not expecting 3D! Keep it up!

Eman, fantastic clip! I can't believe how real RotS can actually look.

The project is very interesting and I hope you can spoil us with some more screenshots and/or clips soon.

Thumbs up, will continue to look how this develops! :)

I'm confused about this miniaturization effect. When VFX guys shoot models, don't they use lenses meant to make things not look like miniatures?

Yep. I think emanswfan is attempting to make the CGI ships more "authentic"-looking by making them look like real models that the VFX guys failed to hide the miniatureness of... or something.

The results speak for themselves. I think it works.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

The process I am using is hard to explain at the moment, as I'm figuring out how to accomplish it all as I'm doing it.  The previous examples were really just a few radial depth blur filters.  The depth map allows true depth (more realistic blurring) to be added into the image, plus I can achieve far more realistic lens distortions.  Plus, there's just too much detail in some CGI shots (and if you look closely there are shots that have aliasing CGI in them).

Again, It's going to be some time till I get it all worked out to show a video, and or screenshots, but it will be worth the wait.

And technically speaking, I shouldn't say converting to 3D, since I'm only getting depth info.  I'm not "painting" in the missing background/foreground edges.  That would most certainly require a real professional-level program, that I can't have.

Hello there emanswfan,

Been lurking this forum for a long time, this thread probably being my most visited. I'm really glad you took on this mammoth project.

I was wondering, are you going to be adding the blurred lens distortion that was present at the very bottom of the frame in some of the wider shots in the OT/ TPM (master shots in Watto's Shop to name one) to AOTC and ROTS?

Not the best resolution, but you can see it best on Anakin's pants in this shot.
At the top of my head, the shot of the heroes bowing in front of Boss Nass at the Gungan sacred place would be another example of the distortion I'm talking about. Somewhat reminiscent of a tilt-shift lens effect.

I have noticed that before, and have been trying to figure out how and why those lens distortions exist.  Obviously, it's not a tilt shift lens.

And sorry, I've been low on updates.  The depth map creation is a time-consuming process, especially when this is the first project you are doing it on.

The nice thing is that with a depth map I can add shallower depth of field to many shots and maybe like in the above example above, have it more prevalent on the top and bottom.

I am not sure why it's there either, but I for one really like the look of it. You gotta commend ILM for blending CGI / model elements into shots featuring that distortion. Must have been a pain in the butt at the time.

Would be great if you could add these distortions to shots in AOTC and ROTS. I don't recall any of these shots in OT, but there are probably a boatload of them, as is the case with lots of 70's and 80's films. Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a prime example full of these distortions, almost to the point of being overbearing.

Raiders is full of anamorphic lens blurs.

I just remembered another one in TPM, this time seen mainly on the top of the screen: As Obi Wan and Qui-Gon launch their surprise attack from the bridge onto the Battle Droid squad that's taking the imprisoned Queen and company to the holding camps.

another nice example how a fake cgi setting can look as good as one of the old movies ;-)

New video clip

Might want to make the shadows not as dark, and am still tweaking the oldified audio (I again only have the center channel on right now).  But the way I've worked with the audio, I've tried to make it sound far less ADR'd and increase the volume of the little sounds like their footsteps.

This one looks way off to me, looks like a clipping out of a newspaper.
